1964 (first mention of Lake Mille Lacs on July 29th)

Our trip out West to see Jack, Georgia, Jr, and Family.  July 18 - July 30, 1964.

July 18, 1964 - Saturday.  The mileage is 61, 200.  We left home at 5:15AM.  Wall Drug of South Dakota advertised on this side of Wisconsin Rapids.  We run into a rain storm in Wisconsin Rapids.  Stopped for breakfast at Marshfield, Dad, Jim and I.  Arrived by Hank and Marie about 10:15AM.  Left Marie's at 11:00.  Marie and Bill raring to go.  Went to Minneapolis and picked Mom up about 2:00PM.  Found out that Ray Richards died of a heart attack.  Stopped at Belle Plaine at 3:45PM and ate dinner and supper together.  Now we're going to get ice and drive till 6:00 and get a motel.  Spent our first nite at Springfield MN.  Went down to the corner bar.  Had a few refreshments.  Went back to our cabin at 9:30, ate chicken and potato chips and went to bed.

July 19, 1964 - Sunday.  Got up at 5:45AM.  We went down to the park and fixed breakfast.  Stopped by Gene and Orrsie.  Had a nice visit.  Stayed a short time, but nice.  We're only 10 miles from the South Dakota border, Bill says.  9:30AM we crossed the South Dakota border.  Mileage: 61, 799.  We had dinner at St. Lawrence in the park.  It was shady, but the water wasn't fit to drink.  So we had milk, pop and a beer.  It is rather warm this afternoon.  We are in the Badlands now.  On entering, we stopped at a homesteader.  Seen the sod house - the beginning of 1913 - and the dirt floor, churn oil lamp, etc.  Stopped at the museum in the Badlands.

July 20, 1964 - Monday.  We slept at Rapid City, S. Dakota last nite and had a real nice cottage.  Ate breakfast at the motel.  Left for Wyoming at 5 minutes to 6:00AM.  Stopped for ice.  Went 2 more miles and stopped at Reptile Gardens.  That was really worth seeing.  Got Sis and Toots jewelry and Mrs. Knuppel a tray.  We are just leaving Mount Rushmore.  Driving thru Custer State Park.  Very curvy and lots of turns, but nice scenic drive.  Entering Wyoming.  Mileage is 62, 318.  We're 519 miles across South Dakota.  We had dinner at New Castle, Wyoming in the park, gassed up at Buffalo, Wyoming.  It's too early (3:15PM) to get a motel, so we decided to go on.  We're leaving Big Horn Mountains now, traveling thru Ten Sleep Canyon.  That's a beautiful drive and scene route, but sharp curves and turns and switch backs and the high layers of rocks....Passed thru Ten Sleep and came thru to Worland and got a nice 3 double bed motel.  TV, air conditioning, even electric coffee pot.  Instant coffee, cream, sugar, and cups.  Cheapest one along the way, real homey.  Pawnee is the name of the motel.

July 21, 1964 - Tuesday.  Left for Jack's at 6:15AM.  Coming into Cody, Wyo at 8:10AM.  We got some pop to drink on the way and Bill got a hair cut, bought Johnny a sweat shirt at Cody of Yellowstone Park.  Crossed the Shoshone River.  It is really wild.  Driving thru 6 tunnels in the mountains.  One tunnel is over 1/4 mile thru the mountain.  Lights in the tunnel like a highway.  We stopped at Buffalo Bill Dam.  It sure is something to see.  Entering Shoshone National Forest.  Entered Yellowstone National Park at 11:10AM.  Mileage:  62, 731.  Stopped and had a snowball fight on the mountain side.  Our car overheated and a guy gave us some water.  Passed Sylvan Lake.  Limit 5 fish.  Just passed a station wagon.  A big cinnamon bear stood up by the back window.  A little kid screamed.  Just passed 2 old ladies from Minnesota.  Harland said they ought to feed them to the bears.  Sign: "25 miles per hour".  Bill took a colored picture of Yellowstone Lake and the snow capped mountain.  We came thru the park at 4:00PM at the west gate.  Stopped by Jack's.  He was home sleeping.  Georgia was home also.  Jack and Harland, Bill and Jim went downtown and got a drink.  It cost $2.10 for one round.  Went downtown at Jack's for supper.  We could all order what we wanted.  We all had chicken, but Bill had shrimp.  Jack and Georgia put us up at the motel.  We had 2 units.  They were really wonderful to us.

July 22, 1964 - Wednesday.  Marie and I, Harland and Jim took our wash down to the laundry mat.  It worked out real nice.  It was so warm coming out, we had 3 bricks of cheese for Jack.  It really stunk under the canvas.  We went down for supper last nite.  Jack had coffee with us and he told "Tiny" (6'2") to "make it 6 steaks".  They were really delicious.  Jack said tiny could do bear hunting with a switch.  She is a big woman.

July 23, 1964 - Thursday.  We took some ironing down to the laundry mat, done that, came home, cleaned our cabins, went down and mailed our cards.  We had our dinner and came home and had a nap till Jr and Bill got done working.  Now they're cleaning up.  Then we're going to go where 21 people were killed in the earthquake.  They built a memorial to them there.

July 24, 1964 - Friday.  We cleaned up.  Then went down for breakfast, came home and washed and set my hair.  Now I'm going over and iron and press up some of Jr's clothes and Bill's as long as he is going to stay.  Harland and Grandma went to look for that particular lake to go fishing tonite.  We are moving from the motel over to Jack's because the Mormon's have their big weekend Friday-Saturday-Sunday and Georgia needs the units (3 and 4) that we were using.

July 25, 1964 - Saturday.  We took a ride into the park (Yellowstone) toward the north gate.  Had our meals in the motel when we moved upstairs.  Went to the Lariat tonite and seen the strip tease.  Didn't amount to nothing.

July 26, 1964 - Sunday.  We got up, packed and went to 7:00AM mass.  Had breakfast at Jack's, picked up Bill's clothes and left for home.  Leaving West Yellowstone at 9:05AM for Mom's.  The mileage is 63, 166.  The mileage from Horicon to Jack's was 1,636 miles.  It's 85 miles from Jack's to Bozeman, Montana.  Going thru Gallatin National Forest.  It's a beautiful drive thru the canyon.  Just like Georgia said.  There is still snow on the mountains.  Jack said the humidity is usually 18-20%.  It sure was dry.  Our lips were just chapped.  I bought a jar of Vicks.  We had to detour before we got into Bozeman, population - don't know.  26 miles from Bozeman to Livingston, Monatana.  It's 115 miles from Livingston to Billings, Montana on highway 10.  Real nice black top road.  "Good roads in general, nice curves,"  Harland said, "When you can take them at 75-80 miles an hour".  I'm going to drive when we get to the next town, which is Big Timber, Montana.  More snow on the right, out of Big Timber, Montana - more than we have seen yet.  Gassed up at Billings, Montana.  Ate at a road side out of Billings.  The park was full of people and no tables, so we pulled our rather provoked because we parked on the grass.  We'll drive now till we look for a motel.  We got 3 slips of a small peach begonia at West Yellowstone in that small grocery store.  We drove 474 miles from Jack's to Glendive, Montana.  We got our motel: The name of it is El Centro.  $12 a nite for 6 people.

July 27, 1964 - Monday.  We left our motel at 6:30AM.  The temperature was 68 degrees on the bank.  We counted 80 white crosses where people were killed or died in car accidents.  Crossed the Montana and North Dakota border at 7:15.  38 miles from Glendive to the N.D. border.  A farmer was raking hay in the dried up river bed.  We stopped at Teddy Roosevelt National Park and we stopped at Painted Canyon.  Took pictures of Bill and Jim on a bucking bronco.  We ate dinner at Lion's Hill Side park at Bismark N.D.  Bill took a colored picture.  It was a pretty park.  We stopped and done some shopping at Jamestown N.D.  I got Bob some white T-shirts, myself some hand towels and 2 yellow and white bath towels.  Real pretty.  Bill got Johnny a big green thumb for thumb suckers.  Bill got himself a black billfold.  Jim bought a daisy cork pop gun.  We're headed for Fargo, which is 92 miles.  Bill and I figured we were 169 miles to Mom's from Fargo.  We crossed the Minnesota border between Fargo and Moorehead.  We're still on highway 10.  We've been driving on highway 10 since we left Bozeman, Montana.  We ate supper at the Village Park of Hawley.  A real nice park.  We arrived by Mom's at 5 to 11PM.  We were all tired, had coffee and went to bed.  We lost 2 hours because of the time change.

July 28, 1964 - Tuesday.  It rained in the nite.  After it cleared up, we got ready and went fishing, took hamburger buns and onions and made dinner.  Marie caught a nice sun fish.

July 29, 1964 - Wednesday.  We had a fish fry before we left.  Were they ever delicious.  We left Mom's at 12:30PM.  Georgia's birthday is July 3rd.  Is this ever a pretty drive along Lake Mille Lac. (web cam) George says that is a good fishing lake.  Stopped at North Branch, Minnesota.  Got me a pair of footlets and a white narrow belt.  I've been looking for one for a long time.  We are back in Wisconsin at Taylor Falls at 3:25PM.  Arrived in Tony at 5 to 5PM.  Stopped by Hank at the tavern, had a drink and then went over to the house.

July 30, 1964 - Thursday.  Marie made us some sandwiches and we picked some sweet peas and took some pictures.  Bill took the last colored one of Corrie and Jim Sybers in their little outfit with the bears on it from West Yellowstone.  We took some black and white ones also of Ginger, Hank and Marie.  Left Marie's at 10:00AM, homeward bound.  It's 216 miles from Mom's to Marie's.  Turned off on 73 to Neillsville to look up Schmitd's that used to live in Horicon.  Went to the post office in Neilsville, found out where to go.  As we were by the stop sign, Jim says, "There's Jeff Schmidt now!"  They were in town shopping, so we didn't go out to the farm.  Ronnie was over to Iron Ridge visiting.  Arrived home (Horicon) at 3:00PM.  Carol and Johnny were here.  She was so glad to see us.  She cried.  It was a wonderful vacation.
