Welcome: Chronicles of Anna

Hello!  My name is Tammy Jo (Schumann) Prenot.  I am the granddaughter of Anna and Harland Schumann.  It is my honor to bring the journals that my grandma wrote for over 40 years to you.  I hope you enjoy reading her words and remember her spirit fondly.

She and Grandpa were so incredibly gracious and kind to me.  I thank my parents for allowing me to spend so many summers with them.  I wish every kid could grow up in northern Minnesota, spending their summers fishing, playing, spending time with Great Grandma (Anna Windsor), playing piano at her nursing home [both Cedarbrook and Woodland Acres], watching Grandma and Grandpa serve people at so many service organizations, and, of course, going to the Chicken Shack and Paul Bunyan Center (how does Paul Bunyan know my name?).  These were summers of a lifetime and memories that will last forever. Everyone certainly caught a lot of fish and played a lot of cards.

This blog is a work in progress, even though the journals are essentially complete.  I apologize in advance for slaughtering any names and invite you to contact me so I can properly edit this blog. Either I just could not read her writing or I did not know the people. Also, if you have any pictures of you with Anna and Harland Schumann, I would be happy to post them to this blog.  Just contact me and I'll make sure we work it out.

A family tree seems in order before we get started, which I will be posting once it is relatively complete.  Again, if you would like to contribute any information or have your name added to the tree, please contact me. The tree I will be sharing with you is one I did for free on https://familysearch.org/. This has truly been a labor of love.

March 16, 1951 - Friday.  Today is Sissy's birthday.  I sent her a card yesterday.  I'm getting Billy's hair cut today and then we'll go up and see Sissy.  I haven't got her anything yet, but hope to.  Jr got a hair cut yesterday and Harland on the 14th.  Went up to see Sissy today and took her up some ice cream.  Then she came home with me and rode back when I went after Hon.  Harland, Melvin, Norma and I went shopping Friday nite for shoes for Harland, so then we went out and had a wonderful time.  Came home at 1:00A.M.  Andrea stayed over nite with Sis.  I got sissy two pair of pants for her birthday.

March 17, 1951 - Saturday.  St. Patrick's Day.  Poor Harland had to go to work this morning.  I finished my cleaning and everyone took baths and fixed hair.  After supper Norma and I went over to see the land lady about paint and varnish and shades.  She told us to go ahead and get what we needed.

March 18, 1951 - Palm Sunday.  Got up at 6:30AM and went to church at 8:00.  Then we came home and got ready and went to Lowell to church for Edward's confirmation.  Then we went to Alfred and Dorothy's for dinner and supper.  Had a very nice time.  Mrs. Edgerton, Bob and Marion Edgerton and Sally, Don and Alma was there and had a very nice time.

March 23, 1951 - Good Friday.  The children went to church and I done Friday cleaning.  At 20 minutes to 3:00pm, we went to Beaver Dam shopping.  Was there ever a blizzard!

June 16, 1951 - Friday.  Getting the car packed tonite for an early morning start.  We left at 3:30AM.  Then I forgot the checkbook and my green sweater, so we turned around by the airport and went back.  We really got started at 10 minutes to 4:00am.  We journeyed on thru Portage and Wisconsin Dells.  It rained quite hard before we got to Portage.  We are leaving Mauston at 5:30am.  We are just entering Camp Douglas and Billy's going strong.  Sis and Jr have been sleeping since we arrived at Portage...We are at Tomah and from here we take Highway 12.  We just passed an Indiana car.  On the back window, they had Chesterfields, a camera like Sis's, and an Ocean City seal box.  We got quite a bang out of the collection...Got gas at Black River Falls and ended up with the curse...8:00AM on the outskirts of Eau Claire and good music on the radio.  We had something to eat at 8:45 and now we're on our way and 59 miles from St. Paul.  There was a semi truck tipped over and burned.  Don't know if anyone was hurt or not...We just left Hudson and we had to pay $.05 for the toll bridge.  Went over the bridge at 9:35AM...Arrived at Mom's about 11:15...I drove from St. Paul's to New Ulm, MN.  We stopped and shopped a little and got something to drink...We stopped at Tracy MN for gas and drove partly on the road and the motor killed and couldn't get it started, so Harland asked at the station, and the attendant called someone and then he asked about Gene Ellse and he lived right next to the station and we went in there and had a nice visit.  Then we came on to Brookings and got a cabin, but all there was left was a single one, so Har, Jr, Billy and I stayed at the cabin and Mom and Sis went over to a private home a couple blocks from us.

June 17, 1951 - Saturday.  We got up at 6:30, made coffee, had rolls and cereal and cleaned up and left at 8:00AM.  Stopped at the locker and got some ice.  Then we took off for Huron.  No sooner we started and seen our first jog in the road and our first cowboy in South Dakota.  Jr started right up and he wondered what a "jog in the road" was.  So far, what I've seen in Dakota, it really is nice.  Have KIAO Sioux Falls radio on and some nice music...Stopped for gas at Huron and we asked about Red Arrow Bar and he said, "You're lucky if you find any of them opened on Sunday".  So we'll just have to stop on the way back.  They had a shower of rain on the west side of Huron and got our windshield all dirty...We found a nice pleasant rooster (?) and tied him up for Melvin this fall.  I'll tell him where to look for it...Just went by a sign: "128,000 square miles of scenery at the Black Hills"...Mountain time changed on the west side of Pierre, S.D...

June 18, 1951 - Sunday.  Arrived Pierre S.D. at 11:30AM.  Stopped at a little grocery store to get something for supper and found out where Evelyn Forsythe lived and we looked her up, but she wasn't home, but we left a note...Then I drove from Pierre, S.D. to Midland, S.D. At Midland, we got something to eat and drink and got ice cream: strawberry and muddy road sundae...Sign: "Bad Lands first explored in 1847"...From Midland, S.D. the streets and main road in town was just a muddy mess.  Philip, S.D. was so muddy, too and from there, the road was so winding and hilly...We're going thru the Bad Lands now and they're really something...KODA radio Rapid City...Stopped at Wall to do some shopping.  They advertised it for miles.  Sis got her a belt and that's all she wants now.  She doesn't want any more.  Twenty minutes after 5:00PM, we started for Rapid City...Did it ever rain, coming out of Wasta, S.D....We're almost to Rapid City and gee, is there ever a big airplane flying over.  Harland thought it's a B36...It's been 598 miles from Minneapolis to Rapid City.  Got a nice big cabin.  Went to bed around 8:30PM.

June 19, 1951 - Monday.  Woke up at 4:30, got up and ate.  Got started at 6:30.  We stopped at Reptile Gardens and stopped at Free Zoo, but you could pay to feed animals.  Then we went to Mount Rushmore to see the 4 presidents.  It was really wonderful.  Then we really hit the winding road.  4 tunnels we went thru.  We stopped at Iron Mountain in the Black Hills...We went to the zoo on the outskirts of the Black Hills.  We took pictures of the buffalo, baby buffalo, peacock, elk, deer.  That was really nice.  Elevation: 5383 ft....We ate dinner at Custer City, S.D.  Got something for supper.  We crossed the South Dakota-Wyoming border at 12:40PM.  Just went across Salt Creek in Wyoming.  Is New Castle ever a nice clean city.  Moorcroft is 48 miles from New Castle...Mailed a letter and cards from Lester, Wyoming.  The country on the whole was much greener in places.  Gassed up in Buffalo, Wyo.  Here we got our cabin for Monday nite because it would get dark before we would get out of the mountains.  Before we went to bed, we drove downtown to see the water running down the street from the snow melting on the mountain.

June 20, 1951 - Tuesday.  It was 43 degrees this morning when we left for Jack's at 6:00AM mountain time.  It's 238 miles to Jack's from Buffalo.  Gee, did it ever rain last nite.  There were a lot of stones in the road...Entering Big Horn National Forest.  Oh, are the mountains ever beautiful.  We all took a picture of the mountains.  There is snow along the road and on the top of the building on the ground, in between the trees.  Now we're climbing the mountains.  This is really beautiful and so much woods.  We're just going around a horse shoe curve.  There was a deer grazing on the side hill and a trailer ahead of us and stopped rite on the road (like Bill Wille), backed up so his wife could take a picture and he backed into us and broke his fiber board, but not much wrong or happened.  Jr grabbed his camera, but with the noise, the deer was gone...Sheep Mountain Look Out Station.  There was 4 feet of snow on the north side of the road.  It was 35 degrees and I took the picture, standing in the snow on the side of the road.  Jr picks up some now and throws it...Just took a picture of Shoshone Monument of the men who lost their lives in a forest fire....West Tensleep Creek - that was beautiful...We are on Canyon Road.  This is Tensleep Canyon and rocky and the Snake Hills curves and turns...This is a switchback curve and such a canyon...Tensleep Creek...Stopped in Worland and got me a blouse and Harland gassed up.  140 miles to the park (Yellowstone).  Just went past the Pearce Oil Refinery Co and Sis changed her mind.  She doesn't want an oil gusher now.  They stink...This is good farming land out of Worland, Wyo.  Just crossed Big Horn River.  Is it ever wild and muddy.  9:30 we left Worland...Mom just told Jr she was 62 years old last April...Stopped at Cody and gassed up.  Now we're going thru Shoshone Canyon.  Just took a picture of Shoshone River.  We stopped at Wild Bill Cody Dam.  It was 328 degrees straight down.  Is it ever a pretty picture to see the snow capped mountains against the blue sky and white clouds...Entering Shoshone National Forest.  Just passed Holy City in formation.  Have fun following Horse Creek for a long ways.  They look more like a river than a creek.  Entering Big Game Camp Ground.  We entered East Yellowstone National Park at 1:15PM.  We seen a moose on Sylvan Lake and just saw a big cinnamon bear and a smaller black one.  I just took a picture of a Fountain paint pot, a grey, pink sort of puddly substance, just bubbling and boiling.  Arrived by Jack's at 6:00PM  Had a nice dinner on the house.  Then we came out to the cabin to freshen up and then went down to the restaurant for coffee and whatever we wanted, got a few groceries for breakfast and lunch.  We've eaten our meals by Jack's since we got here and they've been wonderful to us.
