January 1, 1975 - Wednesday. We watched the Rose Parade until noon. Then we picked Mom up and found George and Louise by Shirley and Eli. Had a beer with them, then went looking for a place to eat. We ate at Perkin's Cake and Steak after driving some 80 miles. Mom came home with us and slept on the davenport.
January 2, 1975 - Thursday. Mom and I went to Onamia. I got material for Marie for quilt tops. We stopped at the Little Flower Mission. Mom got some dresses for a fan quilt top. I ripped them all apart and I'll wash and iron 'em up for her. Harland took Mom home.
January 3, 1975 - Friday. We got quite a little snow last nite so I shoveled some and read the meter.
January 7, 1975 - Monday. I went and played cards alone. Harland had such a backache.
January 8, 1975 - Tuesday. I walked up by Mary Jane Murdock. She showed me some slippers, so I'm making some. The weather is just beautiful. It gets down in the teens and warms up to the 20s and 30s.
January 9, 1975 - Wednesday. Went to Brainerd, got some medicine for Harland, done my shopping, stopped by Mom and she came home with me. I clipped her dog, Penny, and it started to snow, so she stayed overnite.
January 10, 1975 - Thursday. I cut Mom's hair and washed it and made dinner and then after 1:00PM, I took her home and it was really snowing, but the roads were slushy, but not slippery. We're listening to WBBR. The roads are blocked, but a lot of the school buses are stuck and kids are stranded in homes. The roads are closed out of Brainerd. There are no plows going. Still the snow is coming down. The wind is blowing 15-20 miles an hour. The pressure is 28,74 steady at 12:00 midnight. Some trees are down on highway 210 going to Crosby. The winds are 20-30 mph. I've shoveled off the front porch 5 times and will do it again before bedtime. It's interesting to listen about the controversy about snowmobiles' curfew at 10PM. Some woman just called and had a spare bedroom, but she said, "I don't know how the hell they'd get here".
January 11, 1975 - Friday. The wind is gusting up to 35-45 mph. The temperature is 22 degrees. It's 26 minutes after 12 midnight. I shoveled the porch again and it's really getting colder. The trees are just beautiful. "What beauty God can perform!" I went to bed at 1:30 this AM. Got up at 9AM. It was -8 degrees and I had to shovel to let the dog out.
January 12, 1975 - Saturday. It was -13 degrees this AM and no church. I shoveled out a path to the garage and in front of the garage door. Bill came out and shoveled the 3-4 foot banks in the driveway.
January 13, 1975 - Sunday. I washed my hair. Harland went to Garrison and after dinner we went over by George and Louise and I got a hair cut.
January 14, 1975 - Monday. I washed clothes today. I've been crocheting granny squares. Up to now I have 158. I made Sally Ann cookies and peanut butter cookies this afternoon.
January 16, 1975 - Wednesday. I shoveled out the burn barrel, made apple pudding and scalloped potatoes and ham. After dinner, we went shopping at Brainerd.
January 17, 1975 - Thursday. I stamped a set of dish towels to embroider for Tam. I went up on the roof and shoveled off all the snow and the ice I could get off. Then I took Harland over to the doctor with his backache.
January 19, 1975 - Saturday. It was -16 degrees. We didn't do anything today. I went to church last nite. I started sewing my granny squares together. We ordered our onion sets, sweet spanish pepper seeds, 5 tuberous begonias, etc. Harland's back is getting a little better every day.
January 21, 1975 - Monday. Harland woke me at 6AM and he was real dizzy when he layed down. It could be the extra medication he is taking for his backache.
January 22, 1975 - Tuesday. I took Harland to the doctor at 10:30AM. His blood pressure was low. Dr. Nixon checked him for a stroke, but no signs. I had to increase one of his medicines.
January 23, 1975 - Wednesday. I went to Brainerd (stopped and took Mom along). When we came home, we picked up her medicine. She stayed overnight. We stopped by George and Louise, dropped the step ladder off so she can wash walls. Mom wanted to stay here with her dog. Harland said she could stay, but not another dog. Harland says he is a little better.
January 25, 1975 - I took Mom home this afternoon. It was too stormy to go to church tonite.
January 26, 1975 - Sunday. I went to church this AM.
January 27, 1975 - Monday. I washed clothes today, worked on my afghan. We played Bingo at Lonesome Pine. I won $7.00. Cec took Mom to the hospital after Bingo.
January 28, 1975 - Tuesday. I ironed today.
January 29, 1975 - Wednesday. I went to Brainerd shopping and went up to see Mom. I think it's her nerves. She was throwing up.
January 31, 1975 - Thursday. St. Joe's called. Mom could come home, so I went and picked her up. She couldn't get a hold of Cec. She wanted to come here, but Cec was home. She didn't have any clothes with her. I finished my afghan, watched 2 movies, went to bed at 5 to 3AM.
February 3, 1975 - Sunday. Played Bingo. Won $3.00. Harland won $1.00. Mom was pretty good.
February 4, 1975 - Monday. I cut out a long skirt and sun top for Tam for summer. Mary Jane showed me how to put those slippers together. I got up on the roof and Harland connected the hose to the hot water heater and I got all the ice off over the back door and the electric wires. I wrote a note to John and Tam with their Valentine.
February 5, 1975 - Tuesday. Harland is going to the doctor for a check up. Everything came out good.
February 8, 1975 - Friday. Went over and picked Mom up and I gave her a permanent.
February 9, 1975 - Sunday. We went to church, Mom and I, and then we went to Garrison school for the pancake breakfast. We went over by Mike and Grace. Mom went home. It was almost 11PM when we got home.
February 11, 1975 - Tuesday. Henry Paige stopped and took part of the pump along to put in a new bearing. We played cards tonite. Harland won 3rd. Betty called. She made a mistake. Harland won 2nd.
February 12, 1975 - Ash Wednesday. I went to church tonite.
February 13, 1975 - Thursday. We mailed the Valentines and Bill's birthday out. We went shopping at Brainerd. Mom went along. I paid $25.00 to the hospital for her Medicare. I bought her a long sleeve blouse. Cec said Alice and Ken are going back to North Dakota. Ken is going to train for a manager's job at Piggly Wiggly. Alice and Dee will stay with Ken's mom.
February 15, 1975 - Saturday. I washed my hair this AM. Made apple crisp and after dinner I clipped Chips. We have to take him to the vet again. He has gland trouble again. We got a Valentine from Tam and John. Tam wrote "I miss you".
February 16, 1975 - Sunday. George and Louise came over and we played cards, ate supper and then they left.
February 17, 1975 - Monday. We took Chips to the vet. Got a gallon of paint for the basement floor and after lunch, I started painting.
February 18, 1975 - Tuesday. 8 years ago, Carol was laid to rest.
February 19, 1975 - Wednesday. I washed clothes this AM and then done some more painting. After dinner I finished the floor.
February 20, 1975 - Thursday. I planted our delicious apple seeds. 7 seeds.
February 23, 1975 - Sunday. I started putting contact (paper) on the refrigerator and washed the wall and ceiling over the refrigerator.
February 24, 1975 - Monday. Cleaned more cupboards and washed more walls over the stove and bathroom door.
February 27, 1975 - Thursday. Finished washing the wall and ceiling today.
February 28, 1975 - Friday. Done the ironing in the AM and after dinner, I cut out my blue slacks. After supper, we went to Lonesome Pine and played Bingo. Harland won $10.00.
March 4, 1975 - Tuesday. We went to Deerwood this AM.
March 6, 1975 - Thursday. Shorty brought Mom over and Penny. I washed and set Mom's hair and cleaned out Penny's ears. After supper, I took Mom home. I mailed Marty and Chick's birthday cards. Marty was 3 on Saturday and Chick was 33 on Sunday.
March 8, 1975 - Saturday. George, Louise and Mom came over and we played cards, ate supper and played a couple more games.
March 9, 1975 - Sunday. I finished putting contact on the refrigerator and defrosted it. We ate supper and then went by Cec and played cards.
March 10, 1975 - Monday. I'm making a blue slack set for myself today. I baked a maple chiffon cake and pumpkin pie.
March 12, 1975 - Wednesday. Larry and Mary Jane came over this AM. We played cards.
March 13, 1975 - Thursday. Harland went to the Cities with Bill and he took along some gold. Didn't get much for it. I was sewing on a blouse for myself. I want to take it along by Marie and have her put some button holes in for me.
March 14, 1975 - Friday. We're going by Marie this AM after mail time. Left here at ten thirty. I stopped by Onamia and picked up material for Marie for quilt tops. We arrived about 2:30. Mom stood the trip well.
March 15, 1975 - Saturday. We went to the cheese factory and then went to Ladysmith. Marie got herself a permanent and I got white yarn for my cape. Mom, Marie and I went to church. Ari Onassis passed away today.
March 16, 1975 - Sunday. Gave Marie a permanent, crocheted on and off, played cards at nite.
March 17, 1975 - Monday. We came home today. We ate at North Branch. Got home at 3PM. Took Mom home and in the evening we played Bingo, but won nothing. When we got home, there was a note from John: "Grandpa and Grandma, can I come and live with you? -John" I called him and he said Katie was hollering at him all the time and I asked if he talked to Dad. Dad said you should be glad you have a roof over your head. I told him to pray and to help Katie and write to us and let us kknow how things are.
March 19, 1975 - Wednesday. We came home from Marie's. I planted my freen peppers today. Mom won a ham and we're supposed to come down there for dinner next Sunday. I've been shoveling the snow out from under the clothes lines.
March 21, 1975 - Friday. I started sewing on Tam's long skirt and I tried a tomato seed and a kidney bean and I planted some Jerusalem cherry seeds in my amaryllis pot. The plant is beautiful.
March 23, 1975 - Sunday. We went over by Mom and Cec for a delicious ham dinner. Mom won it at Bingo. We came home at 3:30 because it was really snowing. We had another big blow. It snowed into Monday and winds gusting 50-60 mph.
March 24, 1975 - Monday. The path to the garage was filled again today.
March 25, 1975 - Tuesday. I shoveled out to the garage to get a gallon of milk. I shoveled over half the driveway tonite.
March 26, 1975 - Wednesday. I done my ironing and baked walnut cookies and Sally Ann cookies.
March 27, 1975 - Thursday. Boy, it sure is blowing and snowing. Bill cleaned out the rest of the drive and today it's full again. One thing about the storm, I'm almost done with my white cape.
March 29, 1975 - Saturday. We went to Mille Lacs Electric luncheon and meeting. We came home, picked up the dog and went to Brainerd and done some shopping for Easter.
March 30, 1975 - Easter Sunday. Mom, Harland and I went to church and we had dinner. Then after dinner, George and Louise came over and around 4 o'clock Cec and Shorty came. We had supper and played cards. They went home at 10PM. Cec had to go to work. Mom stayed because there was something wrong with their furnace.
March 31, 1975 - Monday. It's snowing again today and we're going into Brainerd to get our car licenses this afternoon.
April 1, 1975 - Tuesday. It's cold this AM. -10 degrees. I transplanted the kidney bean.
April 2, 1975 - Wednesday. Made Mom's birthday cake - maple chiffon, fried chicken, deviled eggs, potato salad, 3 bean salad and glorified rice.
April 3, 1975 - Thursday. Cec brought ice cream over and gave me 2 dozen eggs. George and Louise were sick with the flu. We gave Mom a pair of pink rosary beads and light green blouse. Cec and Shorty gave her a ring, and Marie and George gave her money. She is 85 today and doing good. She got a card from Chick, Judy and Tammy.
April 4, 1975 - Friday. We went to the bank and Harland went to Crosby to see Dr. Marshall. I went to the dime store, looked around and I got a 2 quart sauce pan and a smaller one for $1.00.
April 5, 1975 - Saturday. Shorty is going to bring Mom and her dog over and I'll clip Penny and cut Mom's hair and fix it. Then at 5PM Cec will come over and we'll go to church and then they'll stay for supper and help eat up the left overs from Mom's birthday. After church we ate supper and cleaned everything up. Shorty had terrible chest pains. I gave him a nitro and after that he had a little relief and we played cards. I asked him if he wanted to quit and he said, "No, no, it's getting better". We wanted him to go to the doctor, but he wouldn't go. He knew it was his old trouble acting up. So after 10:15PM, they went home.
April 6, 1975 - Sunday. At 10:45AM Dilly called and said Shorty passed away and said if I could come down. So we all went down. The coroner and doctor came and we called Father Brennan, but the ambulance had already taken him to Koop Funeral Home. So Father Brennan stayed and quieted Cec down and left. We called different ones. The doctor figured he died sometime between 9AM and 10:45AM, but we figured he was dead before then. He was lying on his stomach and there was blood set in the legs. So he passed away this morning some time....Amy came down. That sure was a mistake. She was impossible to get along with. She stayed over nite with Mom and Cec.
April 7, 1975 - Monday. We went, picked Cec up and took her to Crosby to Koop Funeral Home to make arrangements. George and Louise came and stayed with Mom. Amy changed Cec's bedding and then she went home, but she showed Louise how to run the vacuum cleaner. Marie came tonite and we went to pick Alice and Ken up at Little Falls.
April 8, 1975 - Tuesday. We could view the remains after 2PM.
April 9, 1975 - Wednesday. The services were held at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Garrison at 10AM and internment in Bay Lake Cemetery. The lunch was served in the church hall at noon. The guys stayed here while Marie, Cec, Alice, Mom, Louise and I went to Onamia to get material. Then we came home, played some cards and then ate supper. Then Alice, Ken, Mom, Cec and Ray went by Cec's. Then Marie and I took George and Louise home.
April 10, 1975 - Thursday. Marie gave me a permanent and she went home at 11:45AM. I planted my vegetable seeds in the house.
April 11, 1975 - Friday. Alfred called. Alma passed away today.
April 12, 1975 - Saturday. Harland's 66th birthday. We left after lunch for Wisconsin. Stayed overnite by Marie's. Went to church in Tony at 8PM.
April 13, 1975 - Sunday. Left for Beaver Dam. Arrived around noon. Stopped by Katie. Nobody home, but we left ourselves in. Put some stuff in their freezer for Jim. We run the car thru the wash, had something to eat at McDonald's, went to the funeral and then went up by Alfred's and back out to Katie's. Ate supper, went back to the funeral home. Alma sure looked wonderful. She was in the nursing home almost 5 years.
April 14, 1975 - Monday. The funeral was at 1:30PM. Alma was laid to rest in Lowell Cemetery. Then on the way, we stopped at Harland's home place. It was all remodeled since we lived there 34 years ago. Then we went up by Alfred's and ate. Then we went to Horicon by Chick and Judy's. Then we went back to Katie's.
April 15, 1975 - Tuesday. We were invited by Pat and Len for breakfast. We played some cards and then we went to Horicon by Ed Oestrich, played more cards, ate lunch and left for Alfred's. Left there around 4PM, went out by Katie's, picked up the frozen stuff for Jim, went by Bill and Sharon for supper. We played some cards and came home after 9:30. Sat and talked to Katie and Willie and then went to bed.
April 16, 1975 - Thursday. Collette is 2 years old today. We packed up, left Katie's, had breakfast at Walker's, left Beaver Dam at 8:15, arrived by Marie's about 12:30PM. Ate dinner and then at 1:45PM left for home.
April 17, 1975 - Friday. We didn't do much today, but rest. I transplanted some tomatoes, cherry, pear and bottleneck that Betty gave me.
April 19, 1975 - Saturday. Went shopping to Brainerd and to Nisswa. We got an electric motor. Harland got a rod and reel and we came back to Brainerd and picked up a battery charger. We ate at Country Kitchen. Had chicken for $1.69. It was delicious. Cec and Mom picked me up for church. Then we had a bite to eat and played cards.
April 20, 1975 - Sunday. George and Louise came over and we played cards, ate supper and played some more cards. Then they left.
April 21, 1975 - Monday. Marie is 63 today. George went to the hospital in the Cities for a check up. A settlement is coming up from his injuries in the woods.
April 22, 1975 - Tuesday. Cec called and asked if I would call Father Brennan for information on Shorty's wife's death certificate and Cec's birth certificate.
April 23, 1975 - Wednesday. Father Brennan brought over the papers, what he had, and we took them over. Then she wanted to talk.
April 24, 1975 - Thursday. Harland went to Brainerd with Cec on business. Mom stayed with me and I washed her hair.
April 25, 1975 - Friday. Received our tuberous begonia bulbs today and planted them. I shoveled the top snow off the banks so it dries up.
April 27, 1975 - Sunday. Went to an auction. It was so cold, we didn't stay long. We came home, took off our warm clothes, went down by Mom and Cec for supper. It was good, but my esophagus was acting up, so I took it easy.
April 28, 1975 - Monday. Went down by Cec at 9AM and fixed her refrigerator. The water was running inside. It was a mess. We got home at 12:30PM.
April 29, 1975 - Tuesday. I washed clothes, hung them in the basement. It's been raining for a week now. I finished Tam's long shirt and started on an orange and white checked short set. We went to Aitkin, seen where the Mississippi run over its banks.
April 30, 1975 - Wednesday. Done my ironing and more sewing today. The ice went out of Borden Lake today, 4 days later than last year.
May 2, 1975 - Friday. Jim called. He and Sue are engaged. He said there are 57 days left before his vacation. I went to the doctor at Crosby for my esophagus. It was so sore and I have so much gas. Dr. Larson gave me 2 prescriptions to have filled.
May 3, 1975 - Saturday. Mom and Cec came over and we went to church. Louise and George had some trouble. Louise told him to get out. Ray came over and we played cards. Mom slept on the davenport.
May 4, 1975 - Sunday. Cec has 3 ganders that we're going to help clean. She has one goose and 4 ganders. We cleaned 3 geese. They cleaned real good and were in good shape. Harland took George home and Cec and I defrosed the upright freezer. She gave us 2 chickens for roasting and bread for dressing.
May 8, 1975 - Thursday. The weather has been beautiful, so we dug the garden up this AM and in the afternoon we started to plant. We planted potatoes, lettuce, radishes, and onion. The martins arrived today. We went to church tonite. "Ascencion Day".
May 9, 1975 - Friday. The orioles arrived today.
May 10, 1975 - Saturday. We planted our flowering crab. Harland planted that dark Lilac down by the small pine. The hummingbirds arrived today. I baked Sally Ann cookies, peanut butter and date bars. I went to church tonite.
May 11, 1975 - Mother's Day. Marie and us got Mom 2 nice slips for Mother's Day. Chick and Judy sent me $5.00. We're going out to eat, Mom, Cec, Harland and I. We ate at Country Kitchen. It was real good. Had a nice day.
May 16, 1975 - Friday. Katie and Willie came tonite and we fished Mille Lacs every day except Friday - it was windy and rain. So we went to Brainerd shopping and Willie bought Harland a boat seat and me a 30 cup coffee pot and then gave us $50.00. All tolled, we got 24 walleyes, about 80 perch.
May 24, 1975 - Saturday. We had dinner and they left for home. Then we went down by Cec and Harland helped George fix her pump. George had to go, so Harland fixed it and then we came home. Cec wanted us to stay for supper, but Harland was tired.
May 25, 1975 - Sunday. I went to 8 o'clock mass and then we planted some garden up by Clem's. We were going to set out some tomatoes, but it was too wet. We bought a flowering crab and planted it out May 15th. I made Cec some drapes for her bedroom and the porch for her birthday.
May 26, 1975 - Monday. Decoration Day. We didn't do much, but played Bingo at nite. I won $12.50.
May 27, 1975 - Tuesday. I washed our bedding and then we went to Brainerd, bought a riding mower and a wheel barrel for $12.97. The mower was $509.55. Got the mower from Fleet Supply.
June 2, 1975 - Monday. We planted our house plants out around the house and Elanore called from Garrison that they'd be out.
June 3, 1975 - Tuesday. Made rhubarb squares and rhubarb pie and fixed turkey and dressing and gizzards and froze them as Bill and Sharon and kids and baby sitter are coming Saturday. Went fishing for walleyes on Mille Lacs.
June 5, 1975 - Thursday. I went shopping and Harland, Warner, and Elsie went to Mille Lacs. Got 13 perch and 7 walleye. After supper we went to Mille Lacs. Harland and I got 4 walleyes. Elanor got 1 perch. So far, since they came, we've gotten 24 walleyes.
June 6, 1975 - Friday. I'm taking the bus to Eau Claire. Hank and Marie will pick me up. Then Saturday, Katie and Willie will bring John and Tammy up and then Marie and I will bring them to Minnesota for their vacation. Sharon called Thursday noon. They took Collette to Madison where she is undergoing tests. She just blacks out....Left Onamia at 9:34 for Eau Claire. Hank and Marie picked me up at 2:50 and they had some shopping to finish and then we went home.
June 7, 1975 - Saturday. Bob brought Tam and John up by Marie and then we packed the car and left for Minnesota.
June 8, 1975 - Sunday. Went to church and in the evening, we went to Heron. Got 1 bullhead and 23 blues.
June 9, 1975 - Monday. It rained and was real windy. Cec, Mom, Marie and I went to Onamia and picked up some material. The kids played and Marie, har and I played sheepshead. We each won a game. In the eve, we played Bingo. John won $10.00.
June 16, 1975 - Butch called up. They were leaving in the AM. Arrived Tuesday about 2:30. We sure had a nice 5 days when they were here. His girlfriend, Lori Moran, was a nice person. We played dirty clubs. It was real fun. I talked to John. He sure has a chip on his shoulder. He is getting better.
June 17, 1975 - Marie really had a rainy, windy week. She went home this AM.
June 27, 1975 - Jim and Sue came around 12:30. Last week Mom was here as Cec went to North Dakota to help Alice and Ken move back. Ray Richards had divorce papers served on Pat June 25th. She broke two glasses out down by Cec's. Stayed there and Ray slept in his car and ate with us.
June 30, 1975 - Jim and Dad went to Peterson Late. Tehy got 9 good sized bass.
July 2, 1975 - Wednesday. It's raining again. We were planning on going out fishing on the big boat, but it's storming.
July 4, 1975 - Friday. Chick and Judy came. We had a good time.
July 5, 1975 - Saturday. Jim and Sue left for home around 11:00. Bob came around 3:00.
July 6, 1975 - Sunday. Dad and Chick went fishing and the rest of us went to church.
July 7, 1975 - Monday. Chick, Judy, Tam, Bob, John, Jesse, Scott, Dad, and I went to Crosby. John got his shots. Then we took the kids to Paul Bunyan. From there we went to Lindbergs home at Little Falls. We all came home tired. It was hot out today. One nite we took the boats and went to Heron. We got quite a few pan fish.
July 8, 1975 - Tuesday. I went to the laundromat with sheets and towels.
July 9, 1975 - Wednesday. We took John to Brainerd to get his eyes tested and then Tam picked out her birthday cake. She's nine years old today. Bob took us out to eat at Harold's Club. It was good and Tam had Happy Birthday sung to her. The singer said, "You are a cute little girl" and her eyes just sparkled. She was so tired and she was cold. It really cooled off.
July 10, 1975 - Thursday. Dad, Chick and Judy went fishing, but they aren't back yet. Bob and John are out working. Tam is sleeping. Dionna stayed over nite last nite and the girls went swimming and had a day, but tired.
July 11, 1975 - Friday. Chick, Judy and Tam left at 10AM. Tam cried so.
July 14, 1975 - Monday. I washed clothes today. 9 sheets, etc. Bob and I took John to Crosby for allergy shots. Bob was going home today, but changed his mind. After supper I started to iron sheets, pillow cases, dish towels. Then Bob and Harland wanted to play poker, so I quit and played cards. Harland and I won a little. I gave John my nickles.
July 15, 1975 - Tuesday. Bob left at 12 noon. Clem's brother-in-law was here and Clem is in the hospital. Will undergo surgery tomorrow. He has prostate trouble and cancer of the colon. I finished my ironing this AM, shampooed the carpeting on the porch.
July 17, 1975 - Thursday. Made a cherry pie and veg soup with the fresh vegetables Mike and Grace brought over. I defrosted the big freezer and after supper I shampooed the kitchen carpeting.
July 18, 1975 - Friday. Went to Crosby to get John's shots. No luck. They had to talk to the doctor, so we went to Brainerd. Put 2 new tires on. Done our shopping, had dinner at Country Kitchen, bought our groceries and went back to Crosby and John got his shots.
July 25, 1975 - Friday. Wayne Hawkins, Todd S., and Kevin came after work today. They fished morning and night, but the fish really aren't biting. Kevin, he's something else again.
July 28, 1975 - Monday. Wayne left at 12:15. George came over and fixed our outdoor grill.
August 1, 1975 - Friday. Annie Meyer called. I should come down and pick Mom up as she left Cec's.
August 2, 1975 - Saturday. George and Louise, Har and I and John went down and picked Mom's dresser up and the rest of her belongings. We had words, which weren't very pleasant. Cec just set there and hung her head.
August 3, 1975 - Sunday. Mom, John and I went to church and after church, Mom talked to Father Brennan. He told her to forget about it. She was out of it, so just go on living.
August 4, 1975 - Monday. Harland went to the doctor for a check up. John got 2 allergy shots and then we went down and bought school clothes and then came home. It was 4:30. His appointment was for 2 o'clock.
August 5, 1975 - Tuesday. Mom, I and John went to Brainerd grocery shopping. We had Mom's mailing address changed. Also her Social Security. We went to Lumber Town for supper, the 4 of us. It was real good. Har and I played 2 games of cards. John started to clean his tackle box and I helped him clean it and he put everything back in place. Then we went to bed.
August 6, 1975 - Wednesday. Went to the Mississippi. We got 3 northern. Harland had a bite. Took everything off his pole. We had a cookout. Brats, wieners, potato salad, beans, cookies and bananas. George and Louise came, too.
August 11, 1975 - Monday. I called Cec person-to-person as Mom wanted some of her things. Otherwise Ken would of told me she was sleeping.
August 13, 1975 - Wednesday. We went down to pick up Mom's things and Cec flatly refused to get out of bed to get me Mom's hospital insurance policy. I had words with Ken and I told him he was nothing but a free loader. We didn't get the policy, but the insurance man is writing us out another one. That one will be void.
August 15, 1975 - Friday. We went shopping and went to Nisswa. Got a smoker for smoking bullheads, etc. $29,95 + tax. Bill called and Sharon is in the hospital at Madison for tests. Her girlfriend found her blacked out on the floor.
August 22, 1975 - Bob came at 1:15 on Friday and John went home with Bob on Monday, the 25th (Jim's birthday). John hated to go.
August 23, 1975 - Bill and Sharon came today. The fish aren't biting worth a darn. Sharon and I took the kids to see Paul Bunyan.
August 29, 1975 - Friday. Marie came today.
August 30, 1975 - Saturday. We went to see Lumbertown U.S.A. Mom stayed by Annie Meyer as she couldn't take the walking. We stopped by McDonald's, ate, and picked Mom up and we played poker. Had an enjoyable evening. We went to church.
August 31, 1975 - Sunday. Bill and Sharon packed up and left around 10AM. They got home at 5:15.
September 1, 1975 - Monday. I washed clothes (I had 9 sheets), canned yellow and small red tomatoes in preserves, put 3 packages of sliced cukes in the freezer.
September 2, 1975 - Tuesday. I have small cukes to can this AM.
September 3, 1975 - Wednesday. Marie gave me a permanent. Mrs. Craggy, her neighbor Delores, and the president of the Women's Club of Bay Lake, came over and we're supposed to go to a pot luck dinner tomorrow. We fixed a hot dish and I made the Watergate Cake to take. We had a good dinner and the meeting was nice. Mom enjoyed it also. The husbands are invited also.
September 7, 1975 - Sunday. Marie, Mom, Harland and I went out to eat at Country Kitchen. It was good. We came home and Marie and I put my crazy quilt together. I have to tie it yet.
September 19, 1975 - Tuesday. Marie left for home at 10AM.
September 10, 1975 - Wednesday. I took Chips and Penny in to get clipped and I took Mom into the doctor. She has such a cough and she couldn't shake it. I picked up her medicine and we came home at 4:00. We went back and picked the dogs up at 5PM. I paid $8.00 for Chips and Mom had to pay $10.00 for Penny because she still had an ear infection ($2.00 for medicine).
September 13, 1975 - Saturday. Mom's cold is getting better, but she threw up a couple times today.
September 14, 1975 - Sunday. Alma's birthday. We went to ten o'clock mass. Mom went, too. She felt better.
September 16, 1975 - Monday. Judy's birthday. I forgot to send her a card, so I called her. I sent one, but it will be late. We gave her $5.00 and Mom $3.00.
September 17, 1975 - Tuesday. Went to Brainerd, done some shopping. Can't find anyone yet to fix or make a window for the kitchen and the 3 on the porch, so we can open them.
September 18, 1975 - Wednesday. I defrosted the freezer in the garage and the refrigerator freezer. After dinner we made 20 lbs shredded cabbage into sauerkraut, about 3 gallons. The last 5 lbs I cut the end of my finger. It sure is sore.
September 19, 1975 - Thursday. I wrote another letter to Lucille, if she had room for Mom to stay 3-4 days. She didn't answer in the 1st letter. I cleaned the porch up and made up the bed on the porch for Picks when they come on Monday. I went down cellar and wiped off all our canned food. We sure don't have to worry this winter.
September 22, 1975 - Monday. Warner called tonite and he's buying a pick up truck. He said "to haul apples in". So they won't be here until the end of the week. I washed clothes today, canned 6 pints of beets. Lucille wrote and she has room for Mom, so she will go along and we'll take her on thru to Lucille's. Mom cried when I told her about going.
September 23 1975 - Tuesday. I'm going to wash rugs and blankets and our bedroom drapes.
September 25, 1975 - Thursday. Har and I got 3 nice bass at Peterson this AM. I washed windows on the porch, put my flowers on the sills. Sent for Harland a pair of green slacks.
September 27, 1975 - Saturday. Warner and Elanor came tonite. Mom and I went to church at 5:00.
September 28, 1975 - Sunday. Harland, Warner, and Elanor went to Mille Lacs. Got nothing but a few perch.
September 29, 1975 - Monday. They went to Pickerel. Didn't get home till almost one. I didn't know what to think. Got Mom's insurance straightened out.
September 30, 1975 - Tuesday. Went to Deerwood post office and the bank. God a couple certificates and a birth certificate.
October 1, 1975 - Wednesday. Warner and Elanor left for his brother at Woodruff WI.
October 3, 1975 - Friday. Went to Deerwood and got the checks cashed.
October 9, 1975 - Thursday. Mom, Harland and I left for Wisconsin at 10:45.
October 10, 1975 - Friday. Marie went along with us to Horicon. We dropped Mom off at Lucille's in the late afternoon and then we went by Bill and Sharon after we had supper at Chuck's A&W root beer stand. We all had chicken. It was good.
October 11, 1975 - Saturday. Jim, Marie, Tam and I went to Twin Woods and picked up hickory nuts. Katie and Willie were there when we got back. They were going to a wedding reception.
October 12, 1975 - Sunday. We went to 10:00 mass in Horicon. Marie, Harland and I went by Chick and Judy for supper. It was real good.
October 13, 1975 - Monday. Marie, Harland and I went for a ride on the Horicon Marsh to show Marie the geese. Then we went by Minnie for awhile and then we went by Alfred, but he was out on the farm. So then we went out by Katie. Had chili for supper. Had a good time.
October 14, 1975 - Tuesday. We went by Alfred's for supper and we made some apple pies for Bill and Sharon. Put them in the freezer.
October 15, 1975 - Wednesday. We dropped Harland off by Willie at 6:15AM and Marie and I stopped by Maxine. Visited for awhile and at 8:30 we went to Madison shopping. We tried to call Ginger, but she was working. I got a pair of shoes and Harland a jacket. Then we went by Katie for supper.
October 16, 1975 - Thursday. We stopped by Lawrence and Alice Henkel. They wanted to take us out for supper, but we couldn't as we went to Mayville to watch Chick and Jim's team shoot against Bill's team. Then we went down by Nellie's and that was a mistake. We had a couple drinks and went home.
October 17, 1975 - Friday. We went out by Edward and Lawrence in the afternoon. Then we took the kids and Katie and Willie out for fish at Village Square in Beaver Dam. Then we went down to Lowell to see Butch Pick and he was on a bachelor party. We went over to see Marie and boy, she sure looks rough. Then we stopped by Leipsie and ended up by Katie and Willie.
October 18, 1975 - Saturday. We went to pick Mom up from Lucille's. We stopped and got some sweet rolls and bologna and ate in the car. Harland told Tam she ate in the 'Ambassador Hotel'. She got quite a kick out of that. She told Chick and Judy. Judy said, "I should of dressed you in a long dress". Harland and I went by Metzie and Sally's for supper. They went bowling, so we came home early.
October 19, 1975 - Sunday. We went to church and had a lunch at noon. In the afternoon we went by Pat and Len's for supper. Didn't get home till midnight.
October 20, 1975 - Monday. We left for home at 8:45. Got to Marie's in the afternoon.
October 21, 1975 - Tuesday. Left for Minnesota. Got home at 3PM. Everything was infe. We made 1,494 miles without any trouble.
October 23, 1975 - Thursday. I started picking out hickory nut meats for Marie and I.
October 25, 1975 - Saturday. I made a beef roast, apple pie and baked apples and a bowl of apple sauce. I washed my hair and after dinner I gave Mom a permanent. It turned out nice. I went to church at 5. Mom didn't go as she still had it in her knee.
November 3, 1975 - Mom didn't get her check. I went to the post office, but they didn't know where it was.
November 11, 1975 - We had our 1st snowfall of 1-2 inches and we had nice Indian summer weather and the snow is almost gone.
November 13, 1975 - I had my eyes tested and we bought a davenport and a new chair. Mom stayed by Annie Meyer. Marie called. Henry came home after a 3 week vacation. She told Hank he should choose between her and the cows. Don't know how it will turn out.
November 15, 1975 - We went over by Meyers to celebrate Clarence's birthday and another couple's anniversary. I baked a cake. We had a good time.
November 16, 1975 - We went to St. Cloud Hospital to see Mike who had surgery on his leg.
November 17, 1975 - We stored our old davenport and chair in cabin 14. Then Harland went with Bill to pick up our new chair and davenport.
November 18, 1975 - We played cards at Lonesome Pine.
November 19, 1975 - We were going to play at White Acres, but it was raining all day and after supper it turned into snow.
November 20, 1975 - It's still blowing and snowing today. All tolled we got 9 inches.
November 22, 1975 - We went to Brainerd shopping and around 11:30 the fire truck passed us and it was going out by George and Louise. They had a bad chimney fire. It gutted the closet and everything was ruined with water and smoke. The curtains and shades literally melted on the windows. The windows are cracked in the front room and broke in the front door. It is a mess.
November 23, 1975 - George and Louise came over and got our step ladder and I gave her some soap powder that Clem gave me and it works good. Trisodium phosphate.
November 24, 1975 - We went over and I started washing walls and dishes in the cupboard. Harland and George got 2 x 6 to brace the floor underneath.
November 25, 1975 - I washed more ceiling and side walls while Shotsie took Louise to the doctor for her hearing aid. Harland and George braced the floor and started the little oil burner in the basement. I took their bedding to the laundromat.
November 26, 1975 - I washed the other side of the cupboard and finished the ceiling and part of the walls so Louise could reach the rest.
November 27, 1975 - Louise fixed a goose by Shotsie and I baked a pumpkin pie and mince pie and took dinner rolls and relish tray. We had a good time. Came home around 7PM stuffed.
December 3, 1975 - Harland got his check, but Mom didn't get hers again. I called Social Security and he called Bijenia (?) a couple days later. She got 2 checks in one, so I had to finish Mom's shopping and ours. I'm finishing Sharon's 2 pillows for Xmas and I made Louise 2 sofa pillows also and I'm working on Tam's peach dress and purple slacks. I'm getting our wrapping packages done.
December 19, 1975 - Friday. We went to Brainerd, finished all the shopping that had to be. A year ago today, Fran Joiner passed away. I started baking Xmas cookies.
December 21, 1975 - Sunday. Chick, Judy, and T.J. came this afternoon.
December 23, 1975 - Tuesday. Jim and Sue came after work. They got here about 12:15.
December 24, 1975 - Wednesday. We took Arnie and Clarence's gifts down and when we came home, Bill, Sharon and the kids were here. Around 10:30AM, Jim, Sue, Mom, I, Tam and Judy went to 8:00 mass on Christmas Eve. When we came home, we opened our gifts and the kids were so excited.
December 25, 1975 - George and Louise came over for Xmas dinner and we all had a nice time. The guys all went fishing in the AMs and evenings. They usually came home with something. Cec didn't even call Mom to wish her a merry Xmas and Anny gave Mom her present from Cec. She wouldn't give it to her herself. All in all we had a real nice Xmas.
December 26, 1975 - Chick, Judy and Tam left around 10:00AM.
December 29, 1975 - Bill, Sharon and kids went home at 10:00 loaded with their Uhaul. Bill called at 7:10PM, but he was pulling a trailer, so it took longer.
December 30, 1975 - Jim and Sue left this AM around 10:00AM and he called at 5:05. He was home. After Jim left, I changed the beds and took 7 sheets to the laundry matt. Made dinner and washed dishes and then Mom and I went down by Annie. We came home after 4PM. Harland went fishing and I ironed 7 sheets and all the pillow cases, dish towels.
December 31, 1975 - George and Louise came over and we played cards, seen his birthday out and the New Year in. They went home around 2:00AM New Year's Day.
January 3, 1975 - Friday. We got quite a little snow last nite so I shoveled some and read the meter.
January 7, 1975 - Monday. I went and played cards alone. Harland had such a backache.
January 8, 1975 - Tuesday. I walked up by Mary Jane Murdock. She showed me some slippers, so I'm making some. The weather is just beautiful. It gets down in the teens and warms up to the 20s and 30s.
January 9, 1975 - Wednesday. Went to Brainerd, got some medicine for Harland, done my shopping, stopped by Mom and she came home with me. I clipped her dog, Penny, and it started to snow, so she stayed overnite.
January 10, 1975 - Thursday. I cut Mom's hair and washed it and made dinner and then after 1:00PM, I took her home and it was really snowing, but the roads were slushy, but not slippery. We're listening to WBBR. The roads are blocked, but a lot of the school buses are stuck and kids are stranded in homes. The roads are closed out of Brainerd. There are no plows going. Still the snow is coming down. The wind is blowing 15-20 miles an hour. The pressure is 28,74 steady at 12:00 midnight. Some trees are down on highway 210 going to Crosby. The winds are 20-30 mph. I've shoveled off the front porch 5 times and will do it again before bedtime. It's interesting to listen about the controversy about snowmobiles' curfew at 10PM. Some woman just called and had a spare bedroom, but she said, "I don't know how the hell they'd get here".
January 11, 1975 - Friday. The wind is gusting up to 35-45 mph. The temperature is 22 degrees. It's 26 minutes after 12 midnight. I shoveled the porch again and it's really getting colder. The trees are just beautiful. "What beauty God can perform!" I went to bed at 1:30 this AM. Got up at 9AM. It was -8 degrees and I had to shovel to let the dog out.
January 12, 1975 - Saturday. It was -13 degrees this AM and no church. I shoveled out a path to the garage and in front of the garage door. Bill came out and shoveled the 3-4 foot banks in the driveway.
January 13, 1975 - Sunday. I washed my hair. Harland went to Garrison and after dinner we went over by George and Louise and I got a hair cut.
January 14, 1975 - Monday. I washed clothes today. I've been crocheting granny squares. Up to now I have 158. I made Sally Ann cookies and peanut butter cookies this afternoon.
January 16, 1975 - Wednesday. I shoveled out the burn barrel, made apple pudding and scalloped potatoes and ham. After dinner, we went shopping at Brainerd.
January 17, 1975 - Thursday. I stamped a set of dish towels to embroider for Tam. I went up on the roof and shoveled off all the snow and the ice I could get off. Then I took Harland over to the doctor with his backache.
January 19, 1975 - Saturday. It was -16 degrees. We didn't do anything today. I went to church last nite. I started sewing my granny squares together. We ordered our onion sets, sweet spanish pepper seeds, 5 tuberous begonias, etc. Harland's back is getting a little better every day.
January 21, 1975 - Monday. Harland woke me at 6AM and he was real dizzy when he layed down. It could be the extra medication he is taking for his backache.
January 22, 1975 - Tuesday. I took Harland to the doctor at 10:30AM. His blood pressure was low. Dr. Nixon checked him for a stroke, but no signs. I had to increase one of his medicines.
January 23, 1975 - Wednesday. I went to Brainerd (stopped and took Mom along). When we came home, we picked up her medicine. She stayed overnight. We stopped by George and Louise, dropped the step ladder off so she can wash walls. Mom wanted to stay here with her dog. Harland said she could stay, but not another dog. Harland says he is a little better.
January 25, 1975 - I took Mom home this afternoon. It was too stormy to go to church tonite.
January 26, 1975 - Sunday. I went to church this AM.
January 27, 1975 - Monday. I washed clothes today, worked on my afghan. We played Bingo at Lonesome Pine. I won $7.00. Cec took Mom to the hospital after Bingo.
January 28, 1975 - Tuesday. I ironed today.
January 29, 1975 - Wednesday. I went to Brainerd shopping and went up to see Mom. I think it's her nerves. She was throwing up.
January 31, 1975 - Thursday. St. Joe's called. Mom could come home, so I went and picked her up. She couldn't get a hold of Cec. She wanted to come here, but Cec was home. She didn't have any clothes with her. I finished my afghan, watched 2 movies, went to bed at 5 to 3AM.
February 3, 1975 - Sunday. Played Bingo. Won $3.00. Harland won $1.00. Mom was pretty good.
February 4, 1975 - Monday. I cut out a long skirt and sun top for Tam for summer. Mary Jane showed me how to put those slippers together. I got up on the roof and Harland connected the hose to the hot water heater and I got all the ice off over the back door and the electric wires. I wrote a note to John and Tam with their Valentine.
February 5, 1975 - Tuesday. Harland is going to the doctor for a check up. Everything came out good.
February 8, 1975 - Friday. Went over and picked Mom up and I gave her a permanent.
February 9, 1975 - Sunday. We went to church, Mom and I, and then we went to Garrison school for the pancake breakfast. We went over by Mike and Grace. Mom went home. It was almost 11PM when we got home.
February 11, 1975 - Tuesday. Henry Paige stopped and took part of the pump along to put in a new bearing. We played cards tonite. Harland won 3rd. Betty called. She made a mistake. Harland won 2nd.
February 12, 1975 - Ash Wednesday. I went to church tonite.
February 13, 1975 - Thursday. We mailed the Valentines and Bill's birthday out. We went shopping at Brainerd. Mom went along. I paid $25.00 to the hospital for her Medicare. I bought her a long sleeve blouse. Cec said Alice and Ken are going back to North Dakota. Ken is going to train for a manager's job at Piggly Wiggly. Alice and Dee will stay with Ken's mom.
February 15, 1975 - Saturday. I washed my hair this AM. Made apple crisp and after dinner I clipped Chips. We have to take him to the vet again. He has gland trouble again. We got a Valentine from Tam and John. Tam wrote "I miss you".
February 16, 1975 - Sunday. George and Louise came over and we played cards, ate supper and then they left.
February 17, 1975 - Monday. We took Chips to the vet. Got a gallon of paint for the basement floor and after lunch, I started painting.
February 18, 1975 - Tuesday. 8 years ago, Carol was laid to rest.
February 19, 1975 - Wednesday. I washed clothes this AM and then done some more painting. After dinner I finished the floor.
February 20, 1975 - Thursday. I planted our delicious apple seeds. 7 seeds.
February 23, 1975 - Sunday. I started putting contact (paper) on the refrigerator and washed the wall and ceiling over the refrigerator.
February 24, 1975 - Monday. Cleaned more cupboards and washed more walls over the stove and bathroom door.
February 27, 1975 - Thursday. Finished washing the wall and ceiling today.
February 28, 1975 - Friday. Done the ironing in the AM and after dinner, I cut out my blue slacks. After supper, we went to Lonesome Pine and played Bingo. Harland won $10.00.
March 4, 1975 - Tuesday. We went to Deerwood this AM.
March 6, 1975 - Thursday. Shorty brought Mom over and Penny. I washed and set Mom's hair and cleaned out Penny's ears. After supper, I took Mom home. I mailed Marty and Chick's birthday cards. Marty was 3 on Saturday and Chick was 33 on Sunday.
March 8, 1975 - Saturday. George, Louise and Mom came over and we played cards, ate supper and played a couple more games.
March 9, 1975 - Sunday. I finished putting contact on the refrigerator and defrosted it. We ate supper and then went by Cec and played cards.
March 10, 1975 - Monday. I'm making a blue slack set for myself today. I baked a maple chiffon cake and pumpkin pie.
March 12, 1975 - Wednesday. Larry and Mary Jane came over this AM. We played cards.
March 13, 1975 - Thursday. Harland went to the Cities with Bill and he took along some gold. Didn't get much for it. I was sewing on a blouse for myself. I want to take it along by Marie and have her put some button holes in for me.
March 14, 1975 - Friday. We're going by Marie this AM after mail time. Left here at ten thirty. I stopped by Onamia and picked up material for Marie for quilt tops. We arrived about 2:30. Mom stood the trip well.
March 15, 1975 - Saturday. We went to the cheese factory and then went to Ladysmith. Marie got herself a permanent and I got white yarn for my cape. Mom, Marie and I went to church. Ari Onassis passed away today.
March 16, 1975 - Sunday. Gave Marie a permanent, crocheted on and off, played cards at nite.
March 17, 1975 - Monday. We came home today. We ate at North Branch. Got home at 3PM. Took Mom home and in the evening we played Bingo, but won nothing. When we got home, there was a note from John: "Grandpa and Grandma, can I come and live with you? -John" I called him and he said Katie was hollering at him all the time and I asked if he talked to Dad. Dad said you should be glad you have a roof over your head. I told him to pray and to help Katie and write to us and let us kknow how things are.
March 19, 1975 - Wednesday. We came home from Marie's. I planted my freen peppers today. Mom won a ham and we're supposed to come down there for dinner next Sunday. I've been shoveling the snow out from under the clothes lines.
March 21, 1975 - Friday. I started sewing on Tam's long skirt and I tried a tomato seed and a kidney bean and I planted some Jerusalem cherry seeds in my amaryllis pot. The plant is beautiful.
March 23, 1975 - Sunday. We went over by Mom and Cec for a delicious ham dinner. Mom won it at Bingo. We came home at 3:30 because it was really snowing. We had another big blow. It snowed into Monday and winds gusting 50-60 mph.
March 24, 1975 - Monday. The path to the garage was filled again today.
March 25, 1975 - Tuesday. I shoveled out to the garage to get a gallon of milk. I shoveled over half the driveway tonite.
March 26, 1975 - Wednesday. I done my ironing and baked walnut cookies and Sally Ann cookies.
March 27, 1975 - Thursday. Boy, it sure is blowing and snowing. Bill cleaned out the rest of the drive and today it's full again. One thing about the storm, I'm almost done with my white cape.
March 29, 1975 - Saturday. We went to Mille Lacs Electric luncheon and meeting. We came home, picked up the dog and went to Brainerd and done some shopping for Easter.
March 30, 1975 - Easter Sunday. Mom, Harland and I went to church and we had dinner. Then after dinner, George and Louise came over and around 4 o'clock Cec and Shorty came. We had supper and played cards. They went home at 10PM. Cec had to go to work. Mom stayed because there was something wrong with their furnace.
March 31, 1975 - Monday. It's snowing again today and we're going into Brainerd to get our car licenses this afternoon.
April 1, 1975 - Tuesday. It's cold this AM. -10 degrees. I transplanted the kidney bean.
April 2, 1975 - Wednesday. Made Mom's birthday cake - maple chiffon, fried chicken, deviled eggs, potato salad, 3 bean salad and glorified rice.
April 3, 1975 - Thursday. Cec brought ice cream over and gave me 2 dozen eggs. George and Louise were sick with the flu. We gave Mom a pair of pink rosary beads and light green blouse. Cec and Shorty gave her a ring, and Marie and George gave her money. She is 85 today and doing good. She got a card from Chick, Judy and Tammy.
April 4, 1975 - Friday. We went to the bank and Harland went to Crosby to see Dr. Marshall. I went to the dime store, looked around and I got a 2 quart sauce pan and a smaller one for $1.00.
April 5, 1975 - Saturday. Shorty is going to bring Mom and her dog over and I'll clip Penny and cut Mom's hair and fix it. Then at 5PM Cec will come over and we'll go to church and then they'll stay for supper and help eat up the left overs from Mom's birthday. After church we ate supper and cleaned everything up. Shorty had terrible chest pains. I gave him a nitro and after that he had a little relief and we played cards. I asked him if he wanted to quit and he said, "No, no, it's getting better". We wanted him to go to the doctor, but he wouldn't go. He knew it was his old trouble acting up. So after 10:15PM, they went home.
April 6, 1975 - Sunday. At 10:45AM Dilly called and said Shorty passed away and said if I could come down. So we all went down. The coroner and doctor came and we called Father Brennan, but the ambulance had already taken him to Koop Funeral Home. So Father Brennan stayed and quieted Cec down and left. We called different ones. The doctor figured he died sometime between 9AM and 10:45AM, but we figured he was dead before then. He was lying on his stomach and there was blood set in the legs. So he passed away this morning some time....Amy came down. That sure was a mistake. She was impossible to get along with. She stayed over nite with Mom and Cec.
April 7, 1975 - Monday. We went, picked Cec up and took her to Crosby to Koop Funeral Home to make arrangements. George and Louise came and stayed with Mom. Amy changed Cec's bedding and then she went home, but she showed Louise how to run the vacuum cleaner. Marie came tonite and we went to pick Alice and Ken up at Little Falls.
April 8, 1975 - Tuesday. We could view the remains after 2PM.
April 9, 1975 - Wednesday. The services were held at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Garrison at 10AM and internment in Bay Lake Cemetery. The lunch was served in the church hall at noon. The guys stayed here while Marie, Cec, Alice, Mom, Louise and I went to Onamia to get material. Then we came home, played some cards and then ate supper. Then Alice, Ken, Mom, Cec and Ray went by Cec's. Then Marie and I took George and Louise home.
April 10, 1975 - Thursday. Marie gave me a permanent and she went home at 11:45AM. I planted my vegetable seeds in the house.
April 11, 1975 - Friday. Alfred called. Alma passed away today.
April 12, 1975 - Saturday. Harland's 66th birthday. We left after lunch for Wisconsin. Stayed overnite by Marie's. Went to church in Tony at 8PM.
April 13, 1975 - Sunday. Left for Beaver Dam. Arrived around noon. Stopped by Katie. Nobody home, but we left ourselves in. Put some stuff in their freezer for Jim. We run the car thru the wash, had something to eat at McDonald's, went to the funeral and then went up by Alfred's and back out to Katie's. Ate supper, went back to the funeral home. Alma sure looked wonderful. She was in the nursing home almost 5 years.
April 14, 1975 - Monday. The funeral was at 1:30PM. Alma was laid to rest in Lowell Cemetery. Then on the way, we stopped at Harland's home place. It was all remodeled since we lived there 34 years ago. Then we went up by Alfred's and ate. Then we went to Horicon by Chick and Judy's. Then we went back to Katie's.
April 15, 1975 - Tuesday. We were invited by Pat and Len for breakfast. We played some cards and then we went to Horicon by Ed Oestrich, played more cards, ate lunch and left for Alfred's. Left there around 4PM, went out by Katie's, picked up the frozen stuff for Jim, went by Bill and Sharon for supper. We played some cards and came home after 9:30. Sat and talked to Katie and Willie and then went to bed.
April 16, 1975 - Thursday. Collette is 2 years old today. We packed up, left Katie's, had breakfast at Walker's, left Beaver Dam at 8:15, arrived by Marie's about 12:30PM. Ate dinner and then at 1:45PM left for home.
April 17, 1975 - Friday. We didn't do much today, but rest. I transplanted some tomatoes, cherry, pear and bottleneck that Betty gave me.
April 19, 1975 - Saturday. Went shopping to Brainerd and to Nisswa. We got an electric motor. Harland got a rod and reel and we came back to Brainerd and picked up a battery charger. We ate at Country Kitchen. Had chicken for $1.69. It was delicious. Cec and Mom picked me up for church. Then we had a bite to eat and played cards.
April 20, 1975 - Sunday. George and Louise came over and we played cards, ate supper and played some more cards. Then they left.
April 21, 1975 - Monday. Marie is 63 today. George went to the hospital in the Cities for a check up. A settlement is coming up from his injuries in the woods.
April 22, 1975 - Tuesday. Cec called and asked if I would call Father Brennan for information on Shorty's wife's death certificate and Cec's birth certificate.
April 23, 1975 - Wednesday. Father Brennan brought over the papers, what he had, and we took them over. Then she wanted to talk.
April 24, 1975 - Thursday. Harland went to Brainerd with Cec on business. Mom stayed with me and I washed her hair.
April 25, 1975 - Friday. Received our tuberous begonia bulbs today and planted them. I shoveled the top snow off the banks so it dries up.
April 27, 1975 - Sunday. Went to an auction. It was so cold, we didn't stay long. We came home, took off our warm clothes, went down by Mom and Cec for supper. It was good, but my esophagus was acting up, so I took it easy.
April 28, 1975 - Monday. Went down by Cec at 9AM and fixed her refrigerator. The water was running inside. It was a mess. We got home at 12:30PM.
April 29, 1975 - Tuesday. I washed clothes, hung them in the basement. It's been raining for a week now. I finished Tam's long shirt and started on an orange and white checked short set. We went to Aitkin, seen where the Mississippi run over its banks.
April 30, 1975 - Wednesday. Done my ironing and more sewing today. The ice went out of Borden Lake today, 4 days later than last year.
May 2, 1975 - Friday. Jim called. He and Sue are engaged. He said there are 57 days left before his vacation. I went to the doctor at Crosby for my esophagus. It was so sore and I have so much gas. Dr. Larson gave me 2 prescriptions to have filled.
May 3, 1975 - Saturday. Mom and Cec came over and we went to church. Louise and George had some trouble. Louise told him to get out. Ray came over and we played cards. Mom slept on the davenport.
May 4, 1975 - Sunday. Cec has 3 ganders that we're going to help clean. She has one goose and 4 ganders. We cleaned 3 geese. They cleaned real good and were in good shape. Harland took George home and Cec and I defrosed the upright freezer. She gave us 2 chickens for roasting and bread for dressing.
May 8, 1975 - Thursday. The weather has been beautiful, so we dug the garden up this AM and in the afternoon we started to plant. We planted potatoes, lettuce, radishes, and onion. The martins arrived today. We went to church tonite. "Ascencion Day".
May 9, 1975 - Friday. The orioles arrived today.
May 10, 1975 - Saturday. We planted our flowering crab. Harland planted that dark Lilac down by the small pine. The hummingbirds arrived today. I baked Sally Ann cookies, peanut butter and date bars. I went to church tonite.
May 11, 1975 - Mother's Day. Marie and us got Mom 2 nice slips for Mother's Day. Chick and Judy sent me $5.00. We're going out to eat, Mom, Cec, Harland and I. We ate at Country Kitchen. It was real good. Had a nice day.
May 16, 1975 - Friday. Katie and Willie came tonite and we fished Mille Lacs every day except Friday - it was windy and rain. So we went to Brainerd shopping and Willie bought Harland a boat seat and me a 30 cup coffee pot and then gave us $50.00. All tolled, we got 24 walleyes, about 80 perch.
May 24, 1975 - Saturday. We had dinner and they left for home. Then we went down by Cec and Harland helped George fix her pump. George had to go, so Harland fixed it and then we came home. Cec wanted us to stay for supper, but Harland was tired.
May 25, 1975 - Sunday. I went to 8 o'clock mass and then we planted some garden up by Clem's. We were going to set out some tomatoes, but it was too wet. We bought a flowering crab and planted it out May 15th. I made Cec some drapes for her bedroom and the porch for her birthday.
May 26, 1975 - Monday. Decoration Day. We didn't do much, but played Bingo at nite. I won $12.50.
May 27, 1975 - Tuesday. I washed our bedding and then we went to Brainerd, bought a riding mower and a wheel barrel for $12.97. The mower was $509.55. Got the mower from Fleet Supply.
June 2, 1975 - Monday. We planted our house plants out around the house and Elanore called from Garrison that they'd be out.
June 3, 1975 - Tuesday. Made rhubarb squares and rhubarb pie and fixed turkey and dressing and gizzards and froze them as Bill and Sharon and kids and baby sitter are coming Saturday. Went fishing for walleyes on Mille Lacs.
June 5, 1975 - Thursday. I went shopping and Harland, Warner, and Elsie went to Mille Lacs. Got 13 perch and 7 walleye. After supper we went to Mille Lacs. Harland and I got 4 walleyes. Elanor got 1 perch. So far, since they came, we've gotten 24 walleyes.
June 6, 1975 - Friday. I'm taking the bus to Eau Claire. Hank and Marie will pick me up. Then Saturday, Katie and Willie will bring John and Tammy up and then Marie and I will bring them to Minnesota for their vacation. Sharon called Thursday noon. They took Collette to Madison where she is undergoing tests. She just blacks out....Left Onamia at 9:34 for Eau Claire. Hank and Marie picked me up at 2:50 and they had some shopping to finish and then we went home.
June 7, 1975 - Saturday. Bob brought Tam and John up by Marie and then we packed the car and left for Minnesota.
June 8, 1975 - Sunday. Went to church and in the evening, we went to Heron. Got 1 bullhead and 23 blues.
June 9, 1975 - Monday. It rained and was real windy. Cec, Mom, Marie and I went to Onamia and picked up some material. The kids played and Marie, har and I played sheepshead. We each won a game. In the eve, we played Bingo. John won $10.00.
June 16, 1975 - Butch called up. They were leaving in the AM. Arrived Tuesday about 2:30. We sure had a nice 5 days when they were here. His girlfriend, Lori Moran, was a nice person. We played dirty clubs. It was real fun. I talked to John. He sure has a chip on his shoulder. He is getting better.
June 17, 1975 - Marie really had a rainy, windy week. She went home this AM.
June 27, 1975 - Jim and Sue came around 12:30. Last week Mom was here as Cec went to North Dakota to help Alice and Ken move back. Ray Richards had divorce papers served on Pat June 25th. She broke two glasses out down by Cec's. Stayed there and Ray slept in his car and ate with us.
June 30, 1975 - Jim and Dad went to Peterson Late. Tehy got 9 good sized bass.
July 2, 1975 - Wednesday. It's raining again. We were planning on going out fishing on the big boat, but it's storming.
July 4, 1975 - Friday. Chick and Judy came. We had a good time.
July 5, 1975 - Saturday. Jim and Sue left for home around 11:00. Bob came around 3:00.
July 6, 1975 - Sunday. Dad and Chick went fishing and the rest of us went to church.
July 7, 1975 - Monday. Chick, Judy, Tam, Bob, John, Jesse, Scott, Dad, and I went to Crosby. John got his shots. Then we took the kids to Paul Bunyan. From there we went to Lindbergs home at Little Falls. We all came home tired. It was hot out today. One nite we took the boats and went to Heron. We got quite a few pan fish.
July 8, 1975 - Tuesday. I went to the laundromat with sheets and towels.
July 9, 1975 - Wednesday. We took John to Brainerd to get his eyes tested and then Tam picked out her birthday cake. She's nine years old today. Bob took us out to eat at Harold's Club. It was good and Tam had Happy Birthday sung to her. The singer said, "You are a cute little girl" and her eyes just sparkled. She was so tired and she was cold. It really cooled off.
July 10, 1975 - Thursday. Dad, Chick and Judy went fishing, but they aren't back yet. Bob and John are out working. Tam is sleeping. Dionna stayed over nite last nite and the girls went swimming and had a day, but tired.
July 11, 1975 - Friday. Chick, Judy and Tam left at 10AM. Tam cried so.
July 14, 1975 - Monday. I washed clothes today. 9 sheets, etc. Bob and I took John to Crosby for allergy shots. Bob was going home today, but changed his mind. After supper I started to iron sheets, pillow cases, dish towels. Then Bob and Harland wanted to play poker, so I quit and played cards. Harland and I won a little. I gave John my nickles.
July 15, 1975 - Tuesday. Bob left at 12 noon. Clem's brother-in-law was here and Clem is in the hospital. Will undergo surgery tomorrow. He has prostate trouble and cancer of the colon. I finished my ironing this AM, shampooed the carpeting on the porch.
July 17, 1975 - Thursday. Made a cherry pie and veg soup with the fresh vegetables Mike and Grace brought over. I defrosted the big freezer and after supper I shampooed the kitchen carpeting.
July 18, 1975 - Friday. Went to Crosby to get John's shots. No luck. They had to talk to the doctor, so we went to Brainerd. Put 2 new tires on. Done our shopping, had dinner at Country Kitchen, bought our groceries and went back to Crosby and John got his shots.
July 25, 1975 - Friday. Wayne Hawkins, Todd S., and Kevin came after work today. They fished morning and night, but the fish really aren't biting. Kevin, he's something else again.
July 28, 1975 - Monday. Wayne left at 12:15. George came over and fixed our outdoor grill.
August 1, 1975 - Friday. Annie Meyer called. I should come down and pick Mom up as she left Cec's.
August 2, 1975 - Saturday. George and Louise, Har and I and John went down and picked Mom's dresser up and the rest of her belongings. We had words, which weren't very pleasant. Cec just set there and hung her head.
August 3, 1975 - Sunday. Mom, John and I went to church and after church, Mom talked to Father Brennan. He told her to forget about it. She was out of it, so just go on living.
August 4, 1975 - Monday. Harland went to the doctor for a check up. John got 2 allergy shots and then we went down and bought school clothes and then came home. It was 4:30. His appointment was for 2 o'clock.
August 5, 1975 - Tuesday. Mom, I and John went to Brainerd grocery shopping. We had Mom's mailing address changed. Also her Social Security. We went to Lumber Town for supper, the 4 of us. It was real good. Har and I played 2 games of cards. John started to clean his tackle box and I helped him clean it and he put everything back in place. Then we went to bed.
August 6, 1975 - Wednesday. Went to the Mississippi. We got 3 northern. Harland had a bite. Took everything off his pole. We had a cookout. Brats, wieners, potato salad, beans, cookies and bananas. George and Louise came, too.
August 11, 1975 - Monday. I called Cec person-to-person as Mom wanted some of her things. Otherwise Ken would of told me she was sleeping.
August 13, 1975 - Wednesday. We went down to pick up Mom's things and Cec flatly refused to get out of bed to get me Mom's hospital insurance policy. I had words with Ken and I told him he was nothing but a free loader. We didn't get the policy, but the insurance man is writing us out another one. That one will be void.
August 15, 1975 - Friday. We went shopping and went to Nisswa. Got a smoker for smoking bullheads, etc. $29,95 + tax. Bill called and Sharon is in the hospital at Madison for tests. Her girlfriend found her blacked out on the floor.
August 22, 1975 - Bob came at 1:15 on Friday and John went home with Bob on Monday, the 25th (Jim's birthday). John hated to go.
August 23, 1975 - Bill and Sharon came today. The fish aren't biting worth a darn. Sharon and I took the kids to see Paul Bunyan.
August 29, 1975 - Friday. Marie came today.
August 30, 1975 - Saturday. We went to see Lumbertown U.S.A. Mom stayed by Annie Meyer as she couldn't take the walking. We stopped by McDonald's, ate, and picked Mom up and we played poker. Had an enjoyable evening. We went to church.
August 31, 1975 - Sunday. Bill and Sharon packed up and left around 10AM. They got home at 5:15.
September 1, 1975 - Monday. I washed clothes (I had 9 sheets), canned yellow and small red tomatoes in preserves, put 3 packages of sliced cukes in the freezer.
September 2, 1975 - Tuesday. I have small cukes to can this AM.
September 3, 1975 - Wednesday. Marie gave me a permanent. Mrs. Craggy, her neighbor Delores, and the president of the Women's Club of Bay Lake, came over and we're supposed to go to a pot luck dinner tomorrow. We fixed a hot dish and I made the Watergate Cake to take. We had a good dinner and the meeting was nice. Mom enjoyed it also. The husbands are invited also.
September 7, 1975 - Sunday. Marie, Mom, Harland and I went out to eat at Country Kitchen. It was good. We came home and Marie and I put my crazy quilt together. I have to tie it yet.
September 19, 1975 - Tuesday. Marie left for home at 10AM.
September 10, 1975 - Wednesday. I took Chips and Penny in to get clipped and I took Mom into the doctor. She has such a cough and she couldn't shake it. I picked up her medicine and we came home at 4:00. We went back and picked the dogs up at 5PM. I paid $8.00 for Chips and Mom had to pay $10.00 for Penny because she still had an ear infection ($2.00 for medicine).
September 13, 1975 - Saturday. Mom's cold is getting better, but she threw up a couple times today.
September 14, 1975 - Sunday. Alma's birthday. We went to ten o'clock mass. Mom went, too. She felt better.
September 16, 1975 - Monday. Judy's birthday. I forgot to send her a card, so I called her. I sent one, but it will be late. We gave her $5.00 and Mom $3.00.
September 17, 1975 - Tuesday. Went to Brainerd, done some shopping. Can't find anyone yet to fix or make a window for the kitchen and the 3 on the porch, so we can open them.
September 18, 1975 - Wednesday. I defrosted the freezer in the garage and the refrigerator freezer. After dinner we made 20 lbs shredded cabbage into sauerkraut, about 3 gallons. The last 5 lbs I cut the end of my finger. It sure is sore.
September 19, 1975 - Thursday. I wrote another letter to Lucille, if she had room for Mom to stay 3-4 days. She didn't answer in the 1st letter. I cleaned the porch up and made up the bed on the porch for Picks when they come on Monday. I went down cellar and wiped off all our canned food. We sure don't have to worry this winter.
September 22, 1975 - Monday. Warner called tonite and he's buying a pick up truck. He said "to haul apples in". So they won't be here until the end of the week. I washed clothes today, canned 6 pints of beets. Lucille wrote and she has room for Mom, so she will go along and we'll take her on thru to Lucille's. Mom cried when I told her about going.
September 23 1975 - Tuesday. I'm going to wash rugs and blankets and our bedroom drapes.
September 25, 1975 - Thursday. Har and I got 3 nice bass at Peterson this AM. I washed windows on the porch, put my flowers on the sills. Sent for Harland a pair of green slacks.
September 27, 1975 - Saturday. Warner and Elanor came tonite. Mom and I went to church at 5:00.
September 28, 1975 - Sunday. Harland, Warner, and Elanor went to Mille Lacs. Got nothing but a few perch.
September 29, 1975 - Monday. They went to Pickerel. Didn't get home till almost one. I didn't know what to think. Got Mom's insurance straightened out.
September 30, 1975 - Tuesday. Went to Deerwood post office and the bank. God a couple certificates and a birth certificate.
October 1, 1975 - Wednesday. Warner and Elanor left for his brother at Woodruff WI.
October 3, 1975 - Friday. Went to Deerwood and got the checks cashed.
October 9, 1975 - Thursday. Mom, Harland and I left for Wisconsin at 10:45.
October 10, 1975 - Friday. Marie went along with us to Horicon. We dropped Mom off at Lucille's in the late afternoon and then we went by Bill and Sharon after we had supper at Chuck's A&W root beer stand. We all had chicken. It was good.
October 11, 1975 - Saturday. Jim, Marie, Tam and I went to Twin Woods and picked up hickory nuts. Katie and Willie were there when we got back. They were going to a wedding reception.
October 12, 1975 - Sunday. We went to 10:00 mass in Horicon. Marie, Harland and I went by Chick and Judy for supper. It was real good.
October 13, 1975 - Monday. Marie, Harland and I went for a ride on the Horicon Marsh to show Marie the geese. Then we went by Minnie for awhile and then we went by Alfred, but he was out on the farm. So then we went out by Katie. Had chili for supper. Had a good time.
October 14, 1975 - Tuesday. We went by Alfred's for supper and we made some apple pies for Bill and Sharon. Put them in the freezer.
October 15, 1975 - Wednesday. We dropped Harland off by Willie at 6:15AM and Marie and I stopped by Maxine. Visited for awhile and at 8:30 we went to Madison shopping. We tried to call Ginger, but she was working. I got a pair of shoes and Harland a jacket. Then we went by Katie for supper.
October 16, 1975 - Thursday. We stopped by Lawrence and Alice Henkel. They wanted to take us out for supper, but we couldn't as we went to Mayville to watch Chick and Jim's team shoot against Bill's team. Then we went down by Nellie's and that was a mistake. We had a couple drinks and went home.
October 17, 1975 - Friday. We went out by Edward and Lawrence in the afternoon. Then we took the kids and Katie and Willie out for fish at Village Square in Beaver Dam. Then we went down to Lowell to see Butch Pick and he was on a bachelor party. We went over to see Marie and boy, she sure looks rough. Then we stopped by Leipsie and ended up by Katie and Willie.
October 18, 1975 - Saturday. We went to pick Mom up from Lucille's. We stopped and got some sweet rolls and bologna and ate in the car. Harland told Tam she ate in the 'Ambassador Hotel'. She got quite a kick out of that. She told Chick and Judy. Judy said, "I should of dressed you in a long dress". Harland and I went by Metzie and Sally's for supper. They went bowling, so we came home early.
October 19, 1975 - Sunday. We went to church and had a lunch at noon. In the afternoon we went by Pat and Len's for supper. Didn't get home till midnight.
October 20, 1975 - Monday. We left for home at 8:45. Got to Marie's in the afternoon.
October 21, 1975 - Tuesday. Left for Minnesota. Got home at 3PM. Everything was infe. We made 1,494 miles without any trouble.
October 23, 1975 - Thursday. I started picking out hickory nut meats for Marie and I.
October 25, 1975 - Saturday. I made a beef roast, apple pie and baked apples and a bowl of apple sauce. I washed my hair and after dinner I gave Mom a permanent. It turned out nice. I went to church at 5. Mom didn't go as she still had it in her knee.
November 3, 1975 - Mom didn't get her check. I went to the post office, but they didn't know where it was.
November 11, 1975 - We had our 1st snowfall of 1-2 inches and we had nice Indian summer weather and the snow is almost gone.
November 13, 1975 - I had my eyes tested and we bought a davenport and a new chair. Mom stayed by Annie Meyer. Marie called. Henry came home after a 3 week vacation. She told Hank he should choose between her and the cows. Don't know how it will turn out.
November 15, 1975 - We went over by Meyers to celebrate Clarence's birthday and another couple's anniversary. I baked a cake. We had a good time.
November 16, 1975 - We went to St. Cloud Hospital to see Mike who had surgery on his leg.
November 17, 1975 - We stored our old davenport and chair in cabin 14. Then Harland went with Bill to pick up our new chair and davenport.
November 18, 1975 - We played cards at Lonesome Pine.
November 19, 1975 - We were going to play at White Acres, but it was raining all day and after supper it turned into snow.
November 20, 1975 - It's still blowing and snowing today. All tolled we got 9 inches.
November 22, 1975 - We went to Brainerd shopping and around 11:30 the fire truck passed us and it was going out by George and Louise. They had a bad chimney fire. It gutted the closet and everything was ruined with water and smoke. The curtains and shades literally melted on the windows. The windows are cracked in the front room and broke in the front door. It is a mess.
November 23, 1975 - George and Louise came over and got our step ladder and I gave her some soap powder that Clem gave me and it works good. Trisodium phosphate.
November 24, 1975 - We went over and I started washing walls and dishes in the cupboard. Harland and George got 2 x 6 to brace the floor underneath.
November 25, 1975 - I washed more ceiling and side walls while Shotsie took Louise to the doctor for her hearing aid. Harland and George braced the floor and started the little oil burner in the basement. I took their bedding to the laundromat.
November 26, 1975 - I washed the other side of the cupboard and finished the ceiling and part of the walls so Louise could reach the rest.
November 27, 1975 - Louise fixed a goose by Shotsie and I baked a pumpkin pie and mince pie and took dinner rolls and relish tray. We had a good time. Came home around 7PM stuffed.
December 3, 1975 - Harland got his check, but Mom didn't get hers again. I called Social Security and he called Bijenia (?) a couple days later. She got 2 checks in one, so I had to finish Mom's shopping and ours. I'm finishing Sharon's 2 pillows for Xmas and I made Louise 2 sofa pillows also and I'm working on Tam's peach dress and purple slacks. I'm getting our wrapping packages done.
December 19, 1975 - Friday. We went to Brainerd, finished all the shopping that had to be. A year ago today, Fran Joiner passed away. I started baking Xmas cookies.
December 21, 1975 - Sunday. Chick, Judy, and T.J. came this afternoon.
December 23, 1975 - Tuesday. Jim and Sue came after work. They got here about 12:15.
December 24, 1975 - Wednesday. We took Arnie and Clarence's gifts down and when we came home, Bill, Sharon and the kids were here. Around 10:30AM, Jim, Sue, Mom, I, Tam and Judy went to 8:00 mass on Christmas Eve. When we came home, we opened our gifts and the kids were so excited.
December 25, 1975 - George and Louise came over for Xmas dinner and we all had a nice time. The guys all went fishing in the AMs and evenings. They usually came home with something. Cec didn't even call Mom to wish her a merry Xmas and Anny gave Mom her present from Cec. She wouldn't give it to her herself. All in all we had a real nice Xmas.
December 26, 1975 - Chick, Judy and Tam left around 10:00AM.
December 29, 1975 - Bill, Sharon and kids went home at 10:00 loaded with their Uhaul. Bill called at 7:10PM, but he was pulling a trailer, so it took longer.
December 30, 1975 - Jim and Sue left this AM around 10:00AM and he called at 5:05. He was home. After Jim left, I changed the beds and took 7 sheets to the laundry matt. Made dinner and washed dishes and then Mom and I went down by Annie. We came home after 4PM. Harland went fishing and I ironed 7 sheets and all the pillow cases, dish towels.
December 31, 1975 - George and Louise came over and we played cards, seen his birthday out and the New Year in. They went home around 2:00AM New Year's Day.
