1989

January 1, 1989 - Sunday.  The temp was 10 degrees and lite snow. I made apple crisp and then went to 9:00 mass.  I made dinner for us, Paul, Grace, and Evelyn.  We had turtle and chicken.

January 2, 1989 - Monday.  The temp is -23 degrees and sunny.  After dinner I went to Kmart, got some yarn to make 2 small rugs for Katie in the 2nd bathroom.  Then I went to the laundromat with 6 sheets, etc.  I sewed more on another bed cover.  The high was 4 above.  

January 3, 1989 - Tuesday.  The temp was 0 degrees.  I made apple crisp for Garrison Senior Citizens.  I'm still having stomach problems.  I went to the doctor.  I'm taking a pill 1 hour before meals.

January 4, 1989 - Wednesday.  It was cold and crisp, sunny.  We went to Crosby.  Harland got a haircut.  We mailed Bill's birthday gift (pots and pans), towels.  I went to the V.F.W. Auxiliary meeting tonight.

January 5, 1989 - Thursday.  The temp is frosty and 0 degrees.  We went to Ladies Aid and after 7 years, I'm rid of the secretary job.

January 6, 1989 - Friday.  The temp is 20 degrees and cloudy.

January 7, 1989 - Saturday.  The temp is 22 degrees and snowing.  No unnecessary traveling.

January 8, 1989 - Sunday.  The temp was -4 and blowing.  We got 13 inches of snow.  Nobody made it out.  I shoveled off the porch and kitchen roof.  There was 3 feet of snow in places on the roof. Under the snow was ice and water.  It was dripping in over the sink.  I couldn't finish the bedroom roof.  Jeff will finish the roof.

January 9, 1989 - Monday.  We had -36 degrees this AM and sunny.  I started another bed cover top. I started crocheting a bathroom rug for Katie.

January 10, 1989 - Tuesday.  The temp was -22 degrees and sunny.  I went to the doctor for my sinus and stomach.

January 11, 1989 - Wednesday.  The temp is 5 above and south wind, cloudy.  We had another 6 inches of snow.  I shoveled the porch roof and the kitchen roof off of 6 inches.  The 2 bedroom roof had 18 inches of snow.  That was a hard job.

January 12, 1989 - Thursday.  The temp was -11 and sunny.  Ken Sweet passed away around 8AM of a heart attack.  We went to Brainerd as Harland went to see Dr. Moran (eye).  He has to put drops in 5 x a day.  I worked on the black and white rug for Katie.

January 13, 1989 - Friday.  The temp is 18 degrees.  I finished the 1st rug for Katie.

January 14, 1989 - Saturday.  The temp was 21 degrees and sunny this AM.  I run the sweeper and baked pecan bars.  Margaret Neirman is 81 years old today.  We have 2 feet of snow in the back.

January 15, 1989 - Sunday.  The temp is 2 above and sunny.  I went to 9:00 mass, made dinner and sewed on the bed covers.  Lite snow today.

January 16, 1989 - Monday.  The temp was -5 and sunny.  I picked Susan up for 5 hours at Woodland Acres.

January 17, 1989 - Tuesday.  The temp was 10 degrees and cloudy.  We had light snow.  I made 2 pumpkin pies for our card party at Millers.  Lillie won 1st, Harland low.  Hazel got high, Susan low. I'm working on the 2nd black and white rug for Katie.  John M. had chicken pox, a real bad case even in his throat.  Nicki got scarlet fever.

January 18, 1989 - Wednesday.  It's 20 degrees and cloudy.  I went to the Guild meeting at 1PM.

January 19, 1989 - Thursday.  It's 29 degrees and cloudy.  We went to Brainerd after dinner, Harland had a protime, and we went to the laundromat.

January 20, 1989 - Friday.  It's -5 degrees this AM.  I finished one set of bathroom rugs for Katie.

January 21, 1989 - Saturday.  It's 20 degrees, south wind and sunny.  I done my ironing and pinned 2 bed covered together.  I talked to Marie and her speech is about 85%.  It's wonderful.  I got my ironing done, too.

January 22, 1989 - Sunday.  It's 14 degrees and sunny.  I went to 9:00 mass and then sewed 1 bed cover and started sewing the other one.  We went to Birchwood at Aitkin for brunch.  I pinned another bed cover together.

January 23, 1989 - Monday.  It's 26 degrees and sunny.  Susan picked me up and we spent 5 hours at Woodland Acres.  I finished my 3rd bed cover.

January 24, 1989 - Tuesday.  It's 7 above and clear.  I made another bed cover and pinned a lap robe together.

January 25, 1989 - Wednesday.  It's 7 degrees and light snow.  I finished the lap robe.  I made peas and carrots to take to Deerwood Senior Citizens.  I started another lap robe for the Vets.

January 26, 1989 - Thursday.  It's -11 and sunny.  Harland seen Dr. Moran (eye) this forenoon.  I finished making the lap robe top out of 4 inch squares.  I started another lap robe top.

January 27, 1989 - Friday.  It's 7 above and sunny.  We're supposed to reach the upper 30's.  Harland went to see Dr. Ryan (foot).  We went over by Paul and Grace and at 4:30 we went to the Legion for chicken.

January 28, 1989 - Saturday.  The temp was 18 degrees.  I done part of my Friday cleaning.  I just didn't feel good.

January 29, 1989 - Sunday.  The temp was -2 degrees and cloudy.  I didn't go to mass this AM.

January 30, 1989 - Monday.  It's 18 degrees and sunny.  I picked Susan up for 5 hours at Woodland Acres.  I finished another lap robe.

January 31, 1989 - Tuesday.  The temp is 32 degrees and cloudy.  I defrosted the cleaned up the refrigerator when a can of pop exploded when it froze.  I defrosted the big freezer in the garage as our cold weather is coming to an end.

February 1, 1989 - Wednesday.  It's started to snow.  It's -15 this AM.  Wind chill is 25-35 below. We got 2 inches of snow.  Harland went to Dr. Musty today and he's getting the yearly cancer check up.

February 2, 1989 - Thursday.  It's -22 this AM and we had more snow.  1 inch.  We had a short meeting and dinner at the 40 Club for our Ladies Aid.  We had cake and ice cream.  Mabel and Elmer furnished the cake and we furnished the ice cream.  Elsie was 82 yesterday.  Susan will be 81 on February 5th.

February 3, 1989 - Friday.  It's -38 degrees and wind chill is 70 below. We went down to the bank and stayed where it's warm and comfortable.

February 4, 1989 - Saturday.  It's -32 degrees and sunny.  It won't get above 0 today for a high.

February 5, 1989 - Sunday.  It's -23 and sunny.  the high was -2.  I done some sewing and hand washing.

February 6, 1989 - Monday.  It's -13 degrees and sunny. I picked Susan up for 5 hours at Woodland Acres.

February 7, 1989 - Tuesday.  It's 4 above and sunny.  I cleaned the cupboard over the stove.  I went to the doctor for my problems.  We went over to the Methodist Church for pancakes.

February 8, 1989 - Wednesday.  It's -18 and sunny.  We went to Crosby and had our taxes made out. I got 16 skeins of yellow rug yarn to make 2 rugs for Katie's 2nd bathroom.

February 9, 1989 - Thursday.  It's 7 degrees and cloudy.  It warmed up in the night.

February 10, 1989 - Friday.  It's 2 degrees and cloudy.  I finished the half of the cupboard, washed up our new set of dishes.  We're giving our old ones to Bill.  We went over and picked up our income tax. We have to pay tax to state and federal on $387.00.

February 11, 1989 - Saturday.  It's 5 degrees and partly cloudy.  I cleaned the bathroom, kitchen and porch.  I started out with sore throat.

February 12, 1989 - Sunday.  It's 8 degrees and sunny.  I was sick today.  I finished Katie's small yellow and white rug.  A black and white rug = 18 skeins.  A yellow and white rug (16 yellow and 10 white).  49 skeins total for 4 rugs.

February 13, 1989 - Monday.  The temp is 25 degrees and light snow.  I didn't go to Woodland Acres. I didn't feel up to it.  I made my salad for the card club.

February 14, 1989 - Tuesday.  It's 4 degrees and cloudy.  The Cities had the same temp.  I cleaned out below the sink.  We had card club by Elsie's.  Harland and I both won 1st.  Bill is 40 years old.

February 15, 1989 - Wednesday.  We have -12 this AM and sunny.  I went to the Guild meeting.

February 16, 1989 - Thursday.   It was -18 this AM.  Harland seen Dr. Moran (eye).  I got more rug yarn.  We're getting lite snow tonight.

February 17, 1989 - Friday.  It's -15 degrees and sunny.  I washed the cupboard wood work off so I can varnish it.

February 18, 1989 - Saturday.  The temp was -14 and sunny.  I cleaned the bathroom, kitchen and porch and we went to V.F.W. for chicken.  Paul and Grace took us along to V.F.W.  We came home and played cards till 7PM.  Then they went for church.

February 19, 1989 - Sunday.  It's -17 and sunny.  I went to mass, made dinner and painted around the front room window on the porch and 2 door frames.  I'm working up the rest of the rug yarn for myself.

February 20, 1989 - Monday.  It's -19 and sunny.  I picked Susan up for 5 hours at Woodland Acres. I got a gallon of light green paint for the kitchen.

February 21, 1989 - Tuesday.  It's -4 degrees.  I painted the wall by the stove and bathroom door.  I had to give it 2 coats.  After dinner, I painted by the kitchen door, the 1st coat.

February 22, 1989 - Wednesday.  The temp was -18.  I painted the 2nd coat by the kitchen door.  We went to Deerwood Senior Citizens.  When we came home, I painted behind the kitchen table.

February 23, 1989 - Thursday.  It's -25 this AM.  I'm working on our rug yarn rug between brakes.  I finished the 1st coat on the kitchen.  I finished our rug yarn rug tonite.

February 24, 1989 - Friday.  It's 10 degrees and cloudy.  There's a warm front moving in.  I finished painting the kitchen.  We went to Crosby and played cards for benefit of Camp Courage.  The high for today was 40 degrees and cloudy.

February 25, 1989 - Saturday.  It's 29 degrees and cloudy.  I used the vacuum cleaner and cleaned the back of the refrigerator and took everything out and cleaned it out real good on the inside and outside and moved the fridg back.  I cleaned the bathroom real good, but not spring house cleaning.

February 26, 1989 - Sunday.  It's -1 and sunny, strong north wind.  Bishop Brown said mass here and at Little Flower and at noon we had a pot luck.  It was real enjoyable.

February 27, 1989 - Monday.  It's -21 and sunny.  Susan picked me up for 5 hours at Woodland Acres.  I got sick at Woodland Acres.

February 28, 1989 - Tuesday.  It's -2 and sunny.  I changed our bedding.  I washed the woodwork in the kitchen and washed the windows and put up our curtains.  I painted part of our floor on the porch.

March 1, 1989 - Wednesday.  It's -19 and sunny.  Harland had a blood test taken for cholesterol.  We done our shopping and went to the laundromat.  I painted the 2nd coat on part of the porch floor.

March 2, 1989 - Thursday.  It's -20 and cloudy.  Snow is predicted. We went to Ladies aid by Elmer and Mabel.  I painted under the davenport on the porch.  We're getting snow.  So far we have about 5 inches.

March 3, 1989 - Friday.  It was -1 and cloudy, lite snow.  I painted under the freezer on the porch. We have 9 inches of snow.

March 4, 1989 - Saturday.  I finished painting the floor in front of the door, run the sweeper in the kitchen and bathroom.

March 5, 1989 - Sunday.  It was -16 and sunny.  I went to 9:00 mass.  After church I baked ginger snap cookies.  We took Dena and Red to Carlson for dinner.  After dinner Evelyn picked us up and we went to Crosby for Herb and Elsie Napps 40th wedding anniversary.  I put everything back to normal on the porch now that the painting is done.  We sent Marty a birthday card.  Saturday he will be 17 years old on the 8th.

March 6, 1989 - Monday.  It was -18 below.  I picked Susan up for 5 hours at Woodland Acres.

March 7, 1989 - Tuesday.  It was 13 degrees and partly cloudy.  I made rhubarb dessert for Garrison Senior Citizens.  We went to Crosby and Harland got a haircut.  We came home and went to Garrison Senior Citizens.  After supper we went down to V.F.W. and played 10 games of "500".

March 8, 1989 - Wednesday.  The temp is 23 and cloudy.  We went to Brainerd for a meeting at Bonanza and we had dinner.  Marty is 17 years old today.

March 9, 1989 - Thursday.  The temp is 25 degrees and cloudy.  I done a 3 weeks ironing. After dinner I got a permanent.  Chick is 47 years old today.

March 10, 1989 - Friday.  The temp is 21 degrees and cloudy.  I finished spring house cleaning the kitchen and porch.  We went to Cutler Senior Citizens.  I washed the car windows, swept out the garage, burned the papers and took the garbage over.

March 11, 1989 - Saturday.  It's 28 degrees and cloudy.  I run the vacuum and done Friday cleaning.

March 12, 1989 - Sunday.  It's 16 degrees and cloudy.  I picked Margaret Nierman up for 9:00 mass. I made 2 quilt blocks for a quilt for Ladies Aid.  I cut out more 4 inch squares.

March 13, 1989 - Monday.  The temp was 24 degrees and cloudy.  Susan picked me up for Woodland Acres for 5 hours.  We're expecting another 6 inches of wet snow according to the weather man.

March 14, 1989 - Tuesday.  The temp is 25 degrees.  We're really getting a snow storm today.  8 inches of snow.  I took the mail and paper over for Margaret (Dena and Red are gone).  I shoveled the roof off.

March 15, 1989 - Wednesday.  The temp is -4 and sunny.  We have card club here today.  I fixed Swiss steak, etc.

March 16, 1989 - Thursday.  It was 0 degrees and sunny.  I went to the laundromat in Brainerd.

March 17, 1989 - Friday.  It is -6 and sunny.  The Cities are getting snow.  I put our clothes away. Put a tablecloth on.  The Legion gave us a free beef dinner and we played Bingo.  I won a silver dollar and a padded hanger.

March 18, 1989 - Saturday.  The temp was -19 and sunny.  I went down and got our food share.  I'm sewing on quilt blocks for Ladies Aid.

March 19, 1989 - Palm Sunday.  The temp was 1 degree.  I went to 9:00 mass.  Paul and Grace came over and we played cards.

March 20, 1989 - Monday.  It was 12 degrees and sunny.  I picked Susan up and we went to Woodland Acres for 5 hours.

March 21, 1989 - Tuesday.  The temp was -9 and sunny.  I finished 12 quilt blocks for Ladies Aid.  At 4:40 I went to the doctor for my stomach pains.

March 22, 1989 - Wednesday.  The temp was 5 degrees and sunny.  I wrote out 7 Easter cards, mailed them at Deerwood.  We went to Senior Citizens at Deerwood.

March 23, 1989 - Thursday.  The temp was 26 degrees and cloudy.  I had stomach pains for 3 hours this AM.  I got my hair fixed this afternoon.

March 24, 1989 - Good Friday.  The temp is 31 degrees and cloudy.  I baked hot cross buns, done some hand washing and went to church at 3:30.

March 25, 1989 - Saturday.  The temp was 26 degrees and cloudy.  We had some rain yesterday.  I run the sweeper and dusted.

March 26, 1989 - Easter Sunday.  It was 32 degrees and sunny.  Harland and I went to 8:30 mass and then we went to the Legion for breakfast.  Harland got the flu back so we didn't go out to eat.

March 27, 1989 - Monday.  It was 34 degrees and very foggy.  We both went into the hospital.  I for stomach pains, Harland for cough and spitting.  He has no pneumonia.  I had so much gas after my tests and pains.

March 28, 1989 - Tuesday.  It's foggy and 34 degrees.  I still feel sore in my stomach and gassy.

March 29, 1989 - Wednesday.  It is snowing and turned into freezing rain.  I feel lousy yet.  I'm just laying around.

March 30, 1989 - Thursday.  The temp was 28 degrees, north wind.  Harland fixed some grapefruit for me.  I'm commence to feel pretty good tonite.

March 31, 1989 - Friday.  The temp is 20 degrees and cloudy.  I done our Friday cleaning.  We went to the chicken fry at Deerwood.

April 1, 1989 - Saturday.  April Fools.  The temp was 28 degrees and snow.  We got 1-3 inches.  Bill Cross picked up the turkey eggs and he has our back steps done and he'll get the carpeting and put it on.

April 2, 1989 - Sunday.  The temp was 24 degrees and sunny.  I went to 9:00 mass.  We went to Brainerd to Kentucky Fried Chicken.  We didn't go to the show, "Lean on Me".  We done our grocery shopping and came home.

April 3, 1989 - Monday.  The temp is 34 degrees and sprinkles.  Mom would have been 99 years old today.  I went to Woodland Acres for 5 hours.

April 4, 1989 - Tuesday.  The temp is 31 degrees.  We had snow last night, 1 inch.  It's sunny today. We went to Garrison Senior Citizens and then I went to the doctor for my stomach.

April 5, 1989 - Wednesday.  The temp is 20 degrees and sunny.  We went to St. Joe's hospital for my cat scan.  She took 24 xrays.

April 6, 1989 - Thursday.  the temp is 22 degrees and sunny.  Today is Ladies Aid, but we're not going as I'm on a liquid diet all day.  At 4PM I took 4 little pills to clean myself out.

April 7, 1989 - Friday.  The temp is 18 degrees.  We went to the hospital for my 7:15AM appointment for barium enema on my colon.  I dreaded it more, but it wasn't that bad.  It took about 5 minutes for the barium, but I had another enema before to really clean my colon out good.  Harland got his monthly blood test.  There's snow flurries now at 10:30PM.

April 8, 1989 - Saturday.  The temp is 10 degrees.  I planted our tuberous begonias, made dinner and baked a chiffon cake.  Paul and Grace came over and we watched bowling and then played cards.  We had apple pie, ice cream, cheese and coffee.

April 9, 1989 - Sunday.  The temp is 14 degrees and partly cloudy.

April 10, 1989 - Monday.  The temp was 10 degrees and sunny.  I went to Woodland Acres for 6 hours.  The doctor called and he wants me to take a colonoscopy.  It didn't sound good.

April 11, 1989 - Tuesday.  The temp was 25 degrees.  We went over by Paul and Grace this AM.  Paul took Harland to see Dr. Musty.  I and Grace went to Woodland Acres for our volunteer luncheon.

April 12, 1989 - Wednesday.  The temp is 15 degrees and sunny.  Harland is 80 years old today.  I made an angel food cake with strawberries and topping for our card party.  Elsie gave him 1 red rose. Oscar and I won 1st at our card party today.  Mayme and Elsie won low.  I'm starting my liquid diet today for my colonoscopy for Friday at 11AM.

April 13, 1989 - Thursday.  The temp is 32 degrees and sunny.  I'm sending some birthday cards to Debbie, Collette and Val Hoffman.  I went to Brainerd and picked up a gallon of medicine to drink before my last test on Friday for a colonoscopy.

April 14, 1989 - Friday.  The temp was 32 degrees and sunny.  After I had my colonoscopy I was put in the hospital as I was all cleaned out inside and if I came home, I'd had to go thru the same thing over.  So on Monday at 1:30 I had my surgery.  The tumor was cancerous, but the lymph nodes were clean.  The boys came Friday, the 22nd after work and left Sunday AM.  I came home on Monday, April 24th.  I'm gradually getting my strength back.  Paul came over on Tuesday and raked part of the lawn.

April 26, 1989 - Today was Deerwood Senior Citizen.  Evelyn picked Harland up and she brought me something back, potato salad, etc.

May 3, 1989 - Wednesday.  I went back to the hospital  Paul and Harland took me.  I was having 7-8 BMs a day and I was dehydrating.  I came home on Sunday, May 7th.  Evelyn and Harland came after 1PM.

May 15, 1989 - Monday.  We went to Aitkin and I got material for the new door glass.  I drove, the 1st time since April 14th.  It went pretty good.

May 17, 1989 - Wednesday.  I went to see Dr. Hanske.

May 22, 1989 - Monday.  Harland had a protime and I had a cat scan on my chest at the hospital.  I finished the curtain on the door.  Harland's cleaned out one set of raspberries.  We're getting an electric storm tonight.  Bill was supposed to go to court today.

May 27, 1989 - Saturday.  Katie and Willie came around 12:00 noon.  Willie worked up the 2 garden plots and they planted 3 rows of potatoes and squash down below.  They went to church at 7:30 at Deerwood.

May 28, 1989 - Sunday.  Harland, Katie and Willie went to Turner.  Not even a bite.  The water was so cold.

May 29, 1989 - Monday.  Katie and Willie planted all the garden yesterday.  It's cold, cloudy and windy.  We smashed cans.  They're working up the flower beds.

June 1, 1989 - Thursday.  Katie and Willie really worked while they were here.  They planted and worked up both garden flower beds and lawn.  Katie cleaned out the raspberries by the house.  Willie had a headache before they left.  I put clean bedding on the twin beds.  Katie and Willie left around 7AM.  We're going to Ladies Aid.

June 3, 1989 - Saturday.  The boys got here at 12:30AM.  John, Michelle, Nicki and Natalie came this AM.  We had a nice week weather wise, but fishing wasn't too good, but better than when Katie and Willie left.

June 10, 1989 - Saturday.  The kids all left around 8:15AM.  I stripped the beds and went to Brainerd at the laundromat and hung them out.  I sprinkled all my ironing.

June 11, 1989 - Sunday.  I went to 9:00 mass.  It didn't go tto good with kneeling.  After dinner I got my ironing done.

June 12, 1989 - Monday.  I went to Woodland Acres for 5 hours.  1st time since April 10th.  I've just done odd jobs and taking it kinda easy.

June 23, 1989 - Friday.  We had our kitchen, front room and our bedroom carpeting cleaned.  It looks good.

June 24, 1989 - Saturday.  I went to 5 o'clock mass tonight.  We went to the laundromat early with the laundry and rugs.  I got my hair fixed and dyed today.

June 25, 1989 - Sunday.  I vacuumed the rugs and Harland moved the furniture in place.  We went to Birchwood in Aitkin.  V.G.  $4.75 each.  I started painting in the blue room (outside toilet).

June 28, 1989 - Thursday.  I finished painting in the blue room (privy).  I sure looks nice.

June 29, 1989 - Friday.  I baked a batch of peanut butter cookies and I went with Evelyn and picked another box of strawberries.  I made 2 batches of strawberry jam.  We went to Brainerd.  Harland got a protime.  We paid up Diagnostic (xray reading) and we went to Brainerd Medical and they'll straighten out Medicare for us.  Bill, Jim and Kim came after midnight.

July 1, 1989 - Saturday.  We all slept in late this AM.  The rest went fishing on Borden.  Bill got 2 northern and Dad got the bass.  Jim and Kim got skunked.  We went to Turner 3 times and had good luck.  The kids went down to Pickerel, had good luck.

July 8, 1989 - Saturday.  The kids left at 8:30AM loaded.  I stripped the beds and went to the laundromat.  I went to 5:00 mass.

July 9, 1989 - Sunday.  I picked strawberries for jam and I made dinner and done a big ironing. Warren Austin stopped and his mom and dad thought they better keep the trailer instead of buying our place for a summer home.

July 10, 1989 - Monday.  Susan picked me up for Woodland Acres.  I dug the weeds out of the mums. About 10:30PM my heart really fluttered.  I had 2 nitros and it still continued and at midnight we went to the emergency at the hospital.  So we both stayed, me for tests and Harland, a room.  I didn't have a heart attack and the fluttering isn't serious.  Paul and Grace brought me home and we picked Harland up and went to Twin Pines for supper.

July 14, 1989 - Friday.  I changed our bedding and done some hand washing.  We went to Pine Lake Golden Age today.

July 15, 1989 - Saturday.  Harland carried the water out in the garage and I washed clothes in the Maytag.  It worked out real good.  That's the 1st time since early last fall.

July 16, 1989 - Sunday.  I went to 9:00 mass.

July 17, 1989 - Monday.  I picked Susan up for 5 hours at Woodland Acres.

July 18, 1989 - Tuesday.  We had card club here and I went to the doctor at 4:30PM for a check.  If I feel I need medication for my heart fluttering, he would give me a prescription, but we both thought against it.

July 19, 1989 - Wednesday.  We left for Marie's at 8:30 and we had a real nice visit and rest and Friday AM we took her out for breakfast and we packed up and came home.  Wednesday eve we went over and visited Henry and he gave us a beautiful hanging basket and 10 dozen eggs.  We went up and seen Hank and he could live another 10 years.  He's 86 and has been in the nursing home for 7 years.

July 23, 1989 - Sunday.  I went to 9:00 mass.  It really is hot.

July 24, 1989 - Monday.  Susan picked me up for 5 hours at Woodland Acres.

July 25, 1989 - Tuesday.  I washed clothes in the garage again.

July 26, 1989 - Wednesday.  We went to Senior Citizens at Deerwood.  It was really hot.

July 27, 1989 - Thursday.  I got my ironing done and finished the 10 detergent aprons for Ginger.

July 28, 1989 - Friday.  An insurance man helped figure out my Medicare, doctor and hospital bills.  I made a batch of raspberry and rhubarb jam.  We got 3/4 inch of our 1 rain in 6 weeks.

July 29, 1989 - Saturday.  I made a batch of rhubarb and cherry jam, went to 5 o'clock mass.

July 30, 1989 - Sunday.  I dug 2 wheelbarrells full of weeds out of the upper garden.  I'm not done yet tho.

July 31, 1989 - Monday.  I didn't go to the nursing home as the Guild had a farewell luncheon on our ex-president is moving to Minneapolis.  We went to Izaty's.  It is really a beautiful place.

August 1, 1989 - Tuesday.  We enjoyed our Senior Citizens picnic in Garrison, but it was really hot.

August 2, 1989 - Wednesday.  We went on a bus trip to the races.  We had a good time, but didn't make a killing at the track.

August 4, 1989 - Friday.  I picked 10 1/2 lbs of blueberries near Aitkin, $1.00 a lb.  I took 3 loads of clothes to the laundromat.  It's still so hot.

August 5, 1989 - Saturday.  Today is our 56th wedding anniversary.  I run the vacuum and we went to Dr. Poland's pig roast.  Very good.

August 6, 1989 - Sunday.  I went to 9:00 mass and done our ironing and then met 9 other people to go out to eat for our anniversary.  Then George, Susan, Harland and I played "500".  Then Paul and Grace stopped and we played dirty clubs.

August 7, 1989 - Monday.  I went to Woodland Acres alone.

August 8, 1989 - Tuesday.  I went to Brainerd and tried to get my medical bills straightened out.  It will take awhile.

August 9, 1989 - Wednesday.  We went to Brainerd.  Harland got a protime.

August 10, 1989 - Thursday.  I finished digging around the roses and peonies in the back.  I put fertilizer on (sheep).

August 11, 1989 - Friday.  We had our Pine Lake picnic in the Aitkin park.

August 12, 1989 - Saturday.  We had our Crosby picnic in the park.  The club furnished chicken, but it wasn't done.

August 13, 1989 - Sunday.  I went to 9:00 mass and we went to Deerwood for Elmer and Mabel Anderson's 60th wedding anniversary.

August 14, 1989 - Monday.  I went to the nursing home alone.

August 15, 1989 - Tuesday.  We had card club over by Foresters.  I started to paint the outside of the blue room and then I got the fish cleaning house painted on 3 sides.

August 19, 1989 - Saturday.  We are getting some much needed rain.

August 20, 1989 - Sunday.  We went over by Paul and Grace.

August 21, 1989 - Monday.  Susan picked me up for Woodland Acres for 5 hours.

August 22, 1989 - Tuesday.  I canned 8 quarts of pickles and 4 pints of green beans.  I got my 2 weeks ironing done.

August 23, 1989 - Wednesday.  We went to Senior Citizens in Deerwood.  We made an appointment with Joyal's Garage to get the oil leak fixed on the car.

August 24, 1989 - Thursday.  We went shopping in Brainerd.

August 25, 1989 - Friday.  It's cool this AM.  60 degrees and breezy from the east.  Jim is 36 years old today.

August 26, 1989 - Saturday.  Margaret Abear came over this AM.  We had such a nice visit and we had a much needed rain.  We went to the Legion for chicken and it was lousy.  I went to 5:00 mass.

August 27, 1989 - Sunday.  I'm canning 2 crates of pears.

August 28, 1989 - Monday.  I picked Susan up and we went to Woodland Acres.  I canned the last of the pears, 1 1/2 quarts.

August 29, 1989 - Tuesday.  We washed clothes in the garage.  I washed the bedding down the mattress.  I was beat.

August 30, 1989 - Wednesday.  I canned 3 quarts of whole tomatoes, 9 pints of tomato soup, a batch of tomato preserves and 3 batches of strawberry jam.  I had it in the freezer.

August 31, 1989 - Thursday.  I canned 3 1/2 quarts dill and 4 quarts of tomato juice.  After dinner I ran the sweeper in the kitchen, bath and porch.

September 1, 1989 - Friday.  We took the car over to Deerwood as it leaks oil on the garage floor.

September 2, 1989 - Saturday.  We went to Crosby Senior Citizen.  I went to 5:00 mass.

September 3, 1989 - Sunday.  We dug the potatoes that were dry.  We went to Harding for the church dinner.  It really rained and lightninged on the way home.  We stopped in Brainerd and done shopping in hopes we don't have to go again this week.  I canned 1 quarts dill and 3 quarts of refrigerator pickles.

September 4, 1989 - Labor Day.  I painted 1/2 of the floor and sides in the fish cleaning house.

September 5, 1989 - Tuesday.  Schools start today.  We've been cleaning up and painting the fish house inside and the window frames on the front porch, washing windows and curtains.  We got a beautiful floral spray from Tam for Grandparents Day.  I finished digging the potatoes.  The temp was 85 degrees on the 17th.  I planted out some of the flowers before we get frost.  I canned the last of the tomatoes and the cukes.

September 18, 1989 - Monday.  I went to the nursing home alone.

September 19, 1989 - Tuesday.  We both went to the eye doctor.  I had my eyes tested and Harland had his right eye checked.  He has an appointment in Minneapolis in October.

September 20, 1989 - Wednesday.  I baked zucchini bread, zucchini lemon bars and an apple pie.

September 21, 1989 - Thursday.  Henry and Marie brought our apples.  We went to Twin Pines for supper.  Henry didn't stay as he wanted to see a friend in Minneapolis.

September 22, 1989 - Friday.  Marie and I went to Brainerd.  We got bread for Henry and went to the laundromat.  I took my watch in to have it cleaned.

September 23, 1989 - Saturday.  I done my ironing and we visited.  I fried fish (black bass), fixed salad and cukes.

September 24, 1989 - Sunday.  I went to church and we (Marie, Har and I) went to Aitkin, Birchwood Restaurant, for brunch.  Then I made 3 apple pies, 4 little ones for the boys and made 1 pumpkin for Henry and 2 little ones for the boys.  Paul and Grace came over and we had apple pie (ice cream) and coffee.  They took a bushel of apples for Dorothy.

September 25, 1989 - Monday. I took Marie home and dropped Henry's stuff off and Marie and Tika. Henry sent home a lot of fresh pork, bacon, ham and 3 dozen large eggs.  I'm going to make him a couple more pies.

September 26, 1989 - Tuesday.  I made pickled pork hocks, rendered out lard and painted another storm window and washed the window.

September 27, 1989 - Wednesday.  We hung the storm window and defrosted the freezer on the porch and we served at Deerwood Senior Citizen, went to Crosby and picked up our dry cleaning (my grey coat and Harland's) dress coat.

September 28, 1989 - Thursday.  I got a permanent at Deerwood (real nice).  I painted and washed another window.

September 29, 1989 - Friday.  I washed clothes in the garage and painted the last window frames and done some Friday cleaning.

September 30, 1989 - Saturday.  I dug weed out from the tulips and made a blueberry torte for Unruh's dock party.  It was so windy.  I got most of my flowers planted.  We had supper by Dena's and Red's.

October 1, 1989 - Sunday.  We washed all the shutters.  I made a blueberry pie for Red's birthday Tuesday.  We went to Lonesome Pine for supper.  Hamburgers and onion rings.

October 2, 1989 - Monday.  I went to the nursing home alone.  I made pie crust and baked 2 apple, 1 pumpkin and 1 mincemeat for Henry.  The temp was 28 degrees and frosty.

October 3, 1989 - Tuesday.  The temp was 21 degrees and sunny.  I made a pie for us and the freezer and 1 for the bazaar Saturday.  We took Margaret along to Senior Citizens in Garrison.  I made 9 mobiles for the state hospital.

October 4, 1989 - Wednesday.  Harland went to the foot doctor and he got a (protime) by Dr. Musty. I finished another window and I washed some clothes when we came home from Brainerd.

October 5, 1989 - Thursday.  I made a chicken hot dish for Ladies Aid and I made dressing and roasted a turkey to take along to Beaver Dam.  We took Margaret along with us to Ladies Aid.  She sure enjoyed it.

October 6, 1989 - Friday.  We brought the canned stuff up to take to Wisconsin.  Harland put more shutters on.  Bob Thompson came over and painted in the front of the house.  I made 2 double batches of chocolate chip cookies to take along to Wisconsin.

October 7, 1989 - Saturday.  Evelyn picked me up for our bazaar at Deerwood church which was a huge success.  Harland came over for lunch at noon and then we visited with Paul and Grace and then we went to 5 o'clock mass at Crosby.

October 8, 1989 - Sunday.  We left at 7:45AM for Horicon, Wisconsin for a week.

October 9, 1989 - Monday.  We visited with Spiegelbergs, Birdie and Wayne, Maxine and Warren and Warren drove to get onions.  We got 5 bags (50 lbs each) at $4.50.  Chick and Judy took us out for dinner.

October 10, 1989 - Tuesday.  Bill brought Marty and Collette to Beaver Dam and we took them out to eat at Jennifers.  We went to see Dick Schwandt, but no one was home.  We went over by Dorothy Schumann and she had a doctor appointment.  She called the next day.

October 13, 1989 - Friday.  Dick and Hilda came over by Katie and Willie's.  Katie and I took Nicki to school for 2 hours.  We picked her up at 11AM.  Jim and Bill came for supper.

October 14, 1989 - Saturday.  We took Nicki for her swimming lesson and then we took her home. We went to 4PM mass at St. Pat's and we took Katie and Willie out to eat and we picked up Nick and Natalie.  John and Michelle went to a wedding.

October 15, 1989 - Sunday.  We left Katie's at 8AM, stopped by Marie and took her out to eat in Ladysmith and then we took her home and we came home.  Arrived home at 5:45PM, tired.  The traffic on 169 was terrible.  1,084 cars where the freeway ends to Garrison.

October 16, 1989 - Monday.  We got the car unloaded, put the onions in the basement.  The apples in the fish house and just resting up after our trip.

October 18, 1989 - Wednesday.  I put 15 packages of squash in the freezer.

October 19, 1989 - Thursday.  The temp was 15 degrees this AM.  We had our R.S.V.P. dinner at the high school.  V.G.  I paid our eye doctor bill and B.M.C. bill for me.  I done our laundry, had the car washed and came home.  Harland is cleaning up the leaves.  I dug out the glad and the carrots are next.

October 20, 1989 - Friday.  Another beautiful day.  I made the apricot salad for our card club at Elsie's in Crosby.

October 21, 1989 - Saturday.  We went to the bazaar at the Lutheran Church in Garrison, had lunch, we came home and raked more leaves and we burnt leaves back of the steel shed after 6PM.

October 22, 1989 - Sunday.  I went to 9:00 mass in Garrison, made dinner and we defrosted the big freezer in the garage.  After supper I raked part of the bank and we burnt the leaves right away.  I'm working on the dresser scarf for Tam for Christmas.

October 23, 1989 - Monday.  We're still in a warm spell. I went to the nursing home alone.  We finished the raking and burning of all the leaves except a few for the mums.

October 24, 1989 - Tuesday.  It's 38 degrees, sunny and warm.  I finished the mums.

October 25, 1989 - Wednesdays.  The temp is 51 degrees.  Clarence took us to the U.M. hospital for Harland's eyes.  The only help is surgery and he won't see anything for a year and then there's no guarantee.

October 26, 1989 - Thursday.  It's 61 degrees, sunny and windy.  I finished a dresser scarf for Tam for Christmas.  We went to Deerwood furniture and bought a mattress and Harland got a haircut and we went to Brainerd and he got a (protime) at St. Joe's hospital and I paid the last of my hospital bill.

October 27, 1989 - Friday.  The temp is 61 degrees and cloudy.  We got a new mattress and we moved the bed and cleaned everything up good.  I picked out a cereal bowl full of nut meats (hickory).

October 28, 1989 - Saturday.  The temp was 32 degrees.  Far cry from the low 60's that we've been enjoying.  I went to the laundromat and hung them up at home.  We turn the clocks back 1 hour tonight.

October 29, 1989 - Sunday.  The temp was 46 degrees and rain.  We got 1 1/2 inches, which we badly needed.  I went to 9:00 mass and then we cut the carpeting for the porch and put it down.  Paul and Grace came over.  We played cards and had a good visit.

October 30, 1989 - Monday.  The temp is 30 degrees and cloudy.

October 31, 1989 - Tuesday.  The temp is 32 and cloudy.  We got some of the vegetables in from the fish house.  I made hash brown potatoes and we're still working on the hickory nuts.

November 1, 1989 - Wednesday.  The temp is 28 degrees and cloudy.  We had our 1st snow.  Nothing lasting.

November 2, 1989 - Thursday.  I made sandwiches and apple dessert for Ladies Aid by Paul and Grace Musil.  I assisted Grace.

November 3, 1989 - Friday.  The temp was 17 degrees and windy.  I run the vacuum in the 5 rooms. Paul and Grace came over and Paul put the new light fixture in the bathroom.  I made apple crisp and cut some apples up for sauce.

November 4, 1989 - Saturday.  The temp was 24 degrees.  We got a good 1 inch of snow, but it's melting and rain is predicted.  I baked the apple crisp, 1 apple pie and put 2 pies in the freezer, made our apple sauce and put 2 cartons in the freezer.  We serve at Crosby this AM.  We played cards by Tillie Smith's.  We had 2 tables, had a lunch and came home.  It was raining and cold.

November 5, 1989 - Sunday.  The temp is 36, cloudy, misty and nasty.  I went to 8:30 mass at Deerwood.  I cut out 3 hot dish carriers and crocheting on the 2nd dresser scarf.

November 6, 1989 - Monday.  The temp is 33 degrees and cloudy.  I picked Susan up for 4 hours at Woodland Acres.  I made pie crust and I made 4 apple pies and 3 small ones. I baked 3 for Henry.

November 7, 1989 - Tuesday.  The temp is 34 and foggy.  I made 6 apple pies for the freezer.  We went to Garrison Senior Citizens.

November 8, 1989 - Wednesday.  The temp was 33, cloudy and misty.  We went to Brainerd.  Harland got his (protime), we went to S.S.  I didn't get my check this month.  I went to Auxiliary meeting tonite.

November 9, 1989 - Thursday.  The temp is 25 degrees and cloudy and really snowing.  We got 1 1/2 inches.  I had a dizzy spell and weak feeling.

November 10, 1989 - Friday.  It was 26 degrees and cloudy.  We went to Cutlers Thanksgiving dinner at Carlson's today.  I finished the rest of the apples.

November 11, 1989 - Saturday.  The temp is 33 degrees and sunny.  I run the vacuum, made chili for lunch.  Washed my hair.

November 12, 1989 - Sunday.  The temp is 24 degrees and cloudy.  I went to 9:00 mass, made dinner and then we went to a movie ("The Bear").  It was real good with no swearing, etc.  We done some Christmas shopping.  After supper I made a big batch of pumpkin cookies.

November 13, 1989 - Monday.  The temp was 26 degrees and sunny.  We went to Woodland Acres for 4 hours.

November 14, 1989 - Tuesday.  The temp was 22 degrees and cloudy.  We moved the china cupboard where the gun case stood.  I cleaned the house.

November 15, 1989 - Wednesday.  The temp is 24 degrees and cloudy.  We got just a dusting of snow in the night.

November 16, 1989 - Thursday.  The temp is 4 degrees and sunny.  We have card club here.  I made beef stew.  I and Oscar won 1st and Susan, George and Elsie had low.

November 17, 1989 - Friday.  The temp was 7 degrees.  We got an inch of snow.  I done some hand wash, made dinner and put plastic on the bathroom door inside.  Hope it works.

November 18, 1989 - Saturday.  The temp was -5 and sunny.  I done my ironing, made dinner and cut out 4 neck scarfs.  We went to the V.F.W. for chicken.

November 19, 1989 - Sunday.  The temp was 26 degrees.  I went to 9:00 mass in Garrison.  We went to Deerwood at Roy's Old Cafe for dinner.  It's under new management.  Evelyn brought me 2 sheets for the back of the pink and white double knit quilt top Marie made for me to be used as a bedspread.

November 20, 1989 - Monday.  The temp was 35 degrees.  I picked Susan up for 5 hours at Woodland Acres.  I wrote to Kim, Bill and Jim last nite.

November 21, 1989 - Tuesday.  The temp is 18 degrees and cloudy.  Snow is predicted, 2-4 inches. We went to Brainerd for Harland's Dr. Musty appointment, done all our shopping.  We're still getting snow.  It started around 11AM and it's still snowing at 10:30PM.

November 22, 1989 - Wednesday.  The temp is 10 degrees.  We got about 4 inches of snow.  I roasted the grease out of the duck and made a pumpkin pie.  I washed my hair and am sewing on the 3 hot dish carriers.

November 23, 1989 - Thursday.  The temp is 8 degrees and sunny. We went over by Red and Dena's for Thanksgiving.  We had a real nice day.  We watched a move on the VCR.  Had a real good dinner.

November 24, 1989 - Friday.  The temp is 5 degrees.  I cleaned house.

November 25, 1989 - Saturday.  The temp was 22 degrees.  I'm working on Christmas cards.

November 26, 1989 - Sunday.  The temp was 23 degrees and sunny.  We reached the 40's temperature yesterday.  Today was 43 degrees.  I went to Brainerd as they're predicting a big snow storm and wind for tonight and tomorrow.  I made our fudge today when I came home from shopping.  I'm working on my 3rd dresser scarf.

November 27, 1989 - Monday.  The temp was 10 degrees.  I house cleaned the closet.  It really needed it.

November 28, 1989 - Tuesday.  The temp is -8 and sunny.  I finished our mint candy and my 3rd dresser scarf.

November 29, 1989 - Wednesday.  The temp is 9 degrees.  It warmed up in the night.  I made our candy with chow mein noodles, cashews, chocolate and our mint candies.

November 30, 1989 - Thursday.  The temp was 14 degrees and sunny.  I played cards by Loretta Hagens in Hazel's place.  I won 2nd.

December 1, 1989 - Friday.  The temp was 20 degrees and cloudy.  Harland had a 9AM echo test at the hospital and we done our shopping and came home, had a bite to eat and we went to Aitkin to Norman Lee's funeral.  I made our dressing to stuff an 18 lb turkey for Senior Citizens in Crosby.

December 2, 1989 - Saturday.  I set the alarm and put the turkey in the oven at 3:30AM and again at 6AM and by 8:30 it was done beautifully.  I sliced it up, made gravy and we left at 10:45AM for Crosby.  We had a real delicious dinner and played Bingo.

December 3, 1989 - Sunday.  The temp was -4 and sunny.  I went to 9:00 mass, made dinner and a kettle of turkey vegetable soup and I'm writing out more cards.

December 4, 1989 - Monday.  The temp was 18 degrees and sunny.  I went to the laundromat and opened a savings account at Metropolitan Bank and I went to Woodland Acres for 4 hours.  When supper was over, I made peppermint candies in molds.

December 5, 1989 - Tuesday.  The temp is 28 degrees, cloudy and we're warmer than the Cities.  I made apple crisp for Garrison Senior Citizens.

December 6, 1989 - Wednesday.  The temp was -3 and sunny.  I made date filled cookies for cookie exchange at Ladies Aid, washed dishes and made 15 mobiles for the state hospital.

December 7, 1989 - Thursday.  The temp was -4 this AM.  Harland didn't go to Ladies Aid with Evelyn and I because of his backache.

December 8, 1989 - Friday.  Evelyn and I went on the bus trip to Minneapolis to see and hear Roger Whittaker and an evening out.  There were 6,500 people there.

December 9, 1989 - Saturday.  We had a good night and then 2 hour shopping spree before we headed home.  We had our Christmas party at the V.F.W.  Harland won a pair of ice fishing mittens.

December 10, 1989 - Sunday.  The temp was 7 degrees and cloudy.  I went to 9:00 mass in Garrison. Harland and I went to Deerwood at St. Joe's Christmas program pot luck, I baked pecan cookies and stirred up walnut cookies.  We had supper and then Harland, I and Evelyn went to the Christmas cantata at the Lutheran church in Deerwood.  Then I stirred up our sugar cookies.

December 11, 1989 - Monday.  I went to Woodland Acres alone and after lunch I had my 3 month check up.  Good report for chest xray, but no results yet for the blood test.

December 12, 1989 - Tuesday.  The temp was -11.  I took Harland over to get a haircut and I made lunch for him.  I picked Evelyn and Lena up for the luncheon at the Lutheran church.  It was real nice.

December 13, 1989 - Wednesday.  Temp was -4.  I baked my sugar and filled cookies.  We went to Deerwood, got 30 lbs of bacon for the boys.

December 14, 1989 - Thursday.  The temp was -22 this AM.  We made a batch of seafoam.  We went to the Moose Lodge for a turkey dinner thru Metropolitan Bank.  V.G.

December 15, 1989 - Friday.  The temp is -14 and sunny.  No let up for the cold wave.

December 16, 1989 - Saturday.  The temp is -4 and sunny.  I finished our Christmas cards, washed my hair and changed our bedding.  We went to the V.F.W. for the chicken fry and then by Oscar and Hazel and we played 6 handed "500".

December 17, 1989 - Sunday.  I went to 8:30 mass at Deerwood and then picked up my good cookie sheet.  I made a new chocolate oatmeal cookie recipe.  We went over by Paul and Grace, played cards. We had lite snow.

December 18, 1989 - Monday.  The temp is -20 and clear.  We went to Brainerd laundromat and R.S.V.P. luncheon, we done our shopping and came home and made our last batch of seafoam.

December 19, 1989 - Tuesday.  The temp is -22 and sunny.  Harland put the tree up and I'm cleaning house.  I made a dish of cookies and candies up for Clarence for Christmas.  We didn't get above 0 today for the high.  Our high was -10.

December 20, 1989 - Wednesday.  The temp was -26 degrees and clear.  I done my ironing last night and will finish the cleaning today.

December 21, 1989 - Thursday.  The temp is -25.  I finished cleaning 2 bedrooms and the front room and we went to our card club by Foresters.

December 22, 1989 - Friday.  The temp was -25 and at 8 o'clock, it warmed up to -18.

December 23, 1989 - Saturday.  The temp was 0.  It warmed up in the night.  I made dressing, blueberry torte for Dena and Red for Christmas.  It warmed up to 12 degrees.  Jim's car won't start, so they're late.

December 24, 1989 - Sunday.  Christmas Eve.  The temp is 8 degrees.  Today is John's birthday.  He is 26 years old.  They still didn't get Jim's truck started.  They towed it back to Horicon and put it in a heated garage.  He was in Fond du Lac by Kim for Christmas.  Dena and Red asked us over for Christmas dinner as the kids are going home Christmas Day.  Harland passed out by Dena and Red after dinner.  We had a glass of champange before dinner which didn't help.

December 25, 1989 - Monday.  Christmas Day and the temp was 31 degrees.  By noon it was 23 degrees and snow flurries and at 4PM it is 11 degrees and sunny.  The wind is gusting from the north.

December 26, 1989 - Tuesday.  The temp was -13 and sunny.  Afternoon and it started to snow.  Jim, Bill and Marie arrived between 1-2 PM.

December 27, 1989 - Wednesday.  The boys and Harland went on Mille Lacs, got 23 perch.  Marie and I went shopping.  Marie bought a new coat and snow boots.  She bought 2 pair of ear muffs for Nicki and Natalie, real cute.  The high today was 34 degrees and sunny.


December 28, 1989 - Thursday.  The temp is 18 degrees and cloudy.  The boys got 4 beautiful northern.  Harland went, too.  He got 2 northern.

December 29, 1989 - Friday.  The temp is 16 degrees and cloudy.  They went northern fishing again.  They got 3 northern.

December 30, 1989 - Saturday.  Bill, Jim and Marie left at 7:45AM.  Marie was in good spirits.  Jim called when they got home at 4:30PM.  I couldn't sleep so I cleaned the shower stall and went thru the checkbook.

December 31, 1989 - Sunday.  I went to 9 o'clock mass, made dinner.  After dinner I went to Brainerd to the laundromat with 7 sheets, towels and whatever was dirty.  We didn't do anything for New Year's Eve.
