January 6, 1977 - Thursday. George and Louise came over and stayed with Mom while we went to Bay Lake Ladies Aid. I finished 4 dish towels for my gift in the suit case, but they were all sold that day. We came home and the 4 of us played "500". It has been so bitterly cold all the while the kids were here. The fishing was lousy. I've been washing and ironing my 8 sheets, etc, but I'm finally caught up. I'm making my 2nd and third granny square pillow for Ada.
January 8, 1977 - Saturday. Mom went to the bathroom and left her walker by the refrigerator. When she was thru in the bathroom, she kept right on walking into the front room and when she realized what she done, we all had a good laught.
January 9, 1977 - Sunday. We had -44 degrees this AM. I didn't even go to church it was so cold. Ray and Darlene came over and we played "500", then switched to sheepshead. I won $0.20. I made supper and we played again.
January 10, 1977 - Monday. We had -28 degrees this AM. George called up and wanted us to come over, so we went over and bought them 100 lbs of gas. $14.00.
January 16, 1977 - Sunday. Bill called. Sharon went into Madison General on January 13th and had surgery the 14th on her back. The neighbor is taking care of Marty and Collette for $25 and giving them breakfast and dinner. I've made 13 detergent bottle aprons and made Mom another aqua colored cape. I made Bob an afghan and I'm making a ripple afghan for us.
February 28, 1977 - Bill and Harland fixed the floor in Mom's room and laid carpeting. Bill and Betty were over for dinner. I made 3 granny square pillows for Ada Austin.
March 5, 1977 - We sent Chick and Marty's birthday cards out today. Marty will be 5 years on March 8th. Chick will be 35 on March 9th.
March 6, 1977 - George and Louise came over and she gave me a permanent. George and Harland cut the weeping willow down a ways.
March 7, 1977 - I'm washing clothes today.
March 8, 1977 - Marty is 5 years old today.
March 9, 1977 - Chick is 35 years old today.
March 15, 1977 - I planted our peppers today and started 3 geraniums for our planter.
March 16, 1977 - Ray and Darlene are coming this eve with eggs. Darlene was sick, so Ray brought the eggs.
March 21, 1977 - Monday. I washed all the dishes in the china cupboard and the ceiling and walls behind it. We played Bingo. 1st time we went away at nite and left Mom alone. Hon won $5.00.
March 22, 1977 - Tuesday. I washed clothes today and we went to Brainerd. We ordered a mirror and picked up our step ladder from George.
March 23, 1977 - Wednesday. I washed more ceiling and walls and cleaned the green cabinet around the fish bowl.
March 24, 1977 - Thursday. Washed some more walls and ceiling.
March 25, 1977 - Friday. I finished the walls and ceiling and washed all the scatter rugs and 2 orange pillows. I finished the cover for Harland's chair. I ripped the old one apart and am making a rug out of it.
March 26, 1977 - Saturday. Bill and Betty had their auction today. We went over, but didn't buy anything. Then I went to church at 5PM and then Harland and I went down to the Blue Goose for supper with about 18 others. It was real good. We had chicken. We met the new owners of Borden Lake Resort and met Florence and Carl Smith who live over on Wilderness Point Road. We had a nice time. There was 5 robins out in the back.
March 27, 1977 - Sunday. Bill and Betty DeWitt moved today.
March 28, 1977 - Monday. We took Mom in to the doctor and also Chips. He has a prostate problem The vet gave him a shot. I defrosted the big freezer in the garage. That's the first time Mom's been out of the house since December 6th when we brought her home from the hospital.
March 31, 1977 - Thursday. I washed walls in the kitchen and cleaned the back of the refrigerator real good. The kitchen was really soiled.
April 2, 1977 - Saturday. We took Chips and Penny in and got them clipped. We picked up a birthday card for Mom.
April 3, 1977 - Sunday. Mom is 87 years old today. Father Brennan brought her communion out today. George and Louise came over and we were all invited over by Ray and Darlene for a birthday dinner. She had a real good meal. We played cards and came home about 7:30PM. It was snowing when George and Louise left. We played 3 games of "500".
April 4, 1977 - Monday. We went to Deerwood to the bank. We had a good inch of wet snow. The trees were just beautiful.
April 5, 1977 - Tuesday. I washed clothes today. I hung some clothes out, but it was really windy. I wahsed the bathroom curtains.
April 6, 1977 - Wednesday. 2 years ago today, Shorty passed away. I started our vegetable seeds this AM. Made dinner and then I washed the bathroom and then done my ironing and put up the bathroom and kitchen curtains. I picked out more hickory nuts. I washed Mom's hair this AM.
April 7, 1977 - Thursday. We went to Women's Club. The 1st time Mom was out socially. She enjoyed it.
April 8, 1977 - Friday. We went to Brainerd. Paid our taxes, done our shopping, got a large ham and 18 lbs of bacon for $13.59. It was real good. Ada sent $10.00 for 12 aprons for detergent bottles.
April 9, 1977 - Saturday. Went to Mille Lacs Electric meeting. Harland won a pancake festival mixes and syrups. I went to church at 7:30PM.
April 10, 1977 - Easter Sunday. George, Harland, Mom and I went to church. Father Brennan was shocked to see George there. We had oyster stew and ham.
April 11, 1977 - Monday. I started raking the back lawn. Had 3 wood ticks on me. Yak!
April 12, 1977 - Tuesday. Harland is 68 years old today. I'm still raking and we're cleaning up around. We went to Lonesome Pine for a pot luck. It was real good.
April 13, 1977 - Wednesday. I raked the front of the house lawn and on the east side. Then we went to Brainerd, pick up part of our beef, got a new watchband, and Chips got another shot for his problems. After dinner and our story, I started raking acrossed the road. I finished my dozen of detergent bottle aprons.
April 14, 1977 - Thursday. The ice went out of Borden today. I mailed the aprons out today: 72. It rained today, so I didn't finish raking. Harland has a backache. I put hot packs on. Gave Mom a permanent.
April 15, 1977 - Friday. Today we're going to Golden Age at Aitkin. I made a blueberry torte. We have to help serve with George and Susan Forester. We had a nice dinner. A long meeting. After supper, I went out and finished raking. Harland's backache isn't much better. We had a nice shower about 10:30PM.
April 18, 1977 - Monday. I took Harland to the doctor for his backache. Darlene's mother was to be hospitalized that nite. We learned afterwards, she has an infection.
April 21, 1977 - Thursday. Marie is 65 today. I went to Brainerd and picked up the rest of our meat.
April 22, 1977 - Friday. Harland's back was somewhat better. We took a ride to the creek for bullheads. There wasn't anything there yet and not much water either We took a ride over by George and Louise.
April 23, 1977 - Saturday. I'm going to rake at Garrison Cemetery this AM. I washed my hair. I cleaned out the eve trough on the garage.
April 27, 1977 - Wednesday. I transplanted broccoli, tomato and 40 ground cherries.
April 28, 1977 - Thursday. Went to Brainerd shopping. George and Louise went along. I planted parsley and muskmellon seeds today.
April 29, 1977 - Friday. Dena and I helped Betty clean vegetables this AM. We planted 52 Dunlap strawberry plants out today.
April 30, 1977 - Saturday. The men put the piers in today and we had a delicious dinner. Stew, salad and dessert. I brought a plate home for Mom. Harland planted potaotes down below and some onion. Marie called tonite. We can use 1/2 of Clem's garden if we keep the lawn mowed.
May 1, 1977 - Sunday. Went to church, ate dinner and went to an auction. Bought 2 tubs for worms and 2 clocks, candles and beach towel.
May 2, 1977 - Monday. I washed clothes and our bedding and then I did the 2nd washing of drapes, curtains and rugs. I done my ironing after supper.
May 3, 1977 - Tuesday. We're taking Mom to Dr. Biebe. Her eye is bothering her.
May 8, 1977 - Sunday. We went to church and then Harland took Mom and I out to the Chicken Shack for dinner. It was really good. Then we went over by George and Louise and then we came home.
May 9, 1977 - Monday. The orioles arrived today. I washed clothes, too.
May 10, 1977 - Tuesday. The hummingbirds have arrived today. We've been planting garden and setting out plants.
May 18, 1977 - Tuesday. Jim, Wayne and Todd came after work tonite.
May 20, 1977 - Thursday. We went out on the launch and got 26 walleyes and 12 big perch.
May 25, 1977 - Tuesday. Susan and I got a haircut and Sue was bound we should stay for dinner. They gave us some seed potatoes and we planted them and more seeds. We have to plant navy beans and plant some pop corn as long as we have room.
May 27, 1977 - Friday. Katie and Willie came. Willie brought us a larger flag pole and put it in the same nite. We drank beer and played cards till 4AM. We had a nice week and they left June 3rd.
June 4, 1977 - Saturday. Chick, Judy and Tam came around 9AM. Bill, Sharon, Marty and Collette came in the afternoon. We had a nice week. Only one difficulty. The kids got on Judy's nerves, but it all turned out OK.
June 7, 1977 - Tuesday. The kids took us all out to the Chicken Shack for my birthday. We went to Lumbertown USA first, but the dining room wouldn't open before June 24th, so we went to the Chicken Shack. It was real good. Marie came today.
June 9, 1977 - Thursday. Chick and Judy left as she had a hair appointment on Friday and her glasses were there.
June 11, 1977 - Saturday. Bill and Sharon and Collette went home this AM.
June 17, 1977 - Friday. Marie left this AM. The fishing wasn't too bad, but not too good either.
June 19, 1977 - Father's Day. We (Tam, Marty, I and Mom) took Harland out to eat at the Chicken Shack.
June 20, 1977 - Monday. Rain was predicted, so Marty, I and Tam walked into Garrison. We had a 7UP at the Y and rested. Then we got an ice cream cone, rested some more, and then we walked part of the way home. Betty and Ken gave us a ride home from the creek on 10 where the dead fish were. We were getting tired, but Marty was the worst.
June 21, 1977 - Tuesday. I done 2 washings today and all the ironing except 4 shirts. I made Tam's green slacks except shortening them and cut out the white ones for her.
June 22, 1977 - Wednesday. I'm going to do more sewing today and finish my ironing. Harland, Stan Davis, Brett and Zimmer went out on the Blue Goose launch and were literally skunked.
June 25, 1977 - Saturday. Jim came today and left July 8th.
July 4, 1977 - Tam, I, George and Louise and Jim went picking pin cherries and we got rained out. We stopped by Shotsie's till the storm was over. We had a good 2 inches of rain.
July 9, 1977 - Bob and John came.
July 18, 1977 - Monday. I baked cookies and 2 cakes. I'm making Tam white slacks and green slack set, a pink jumper and a long sleeve dress. They all turned out good.
July 19, 1977 - Tuesday. Bob and John left. I washed clothes, cleaned house and packed up to take Marty and Tam home. Ed Elmer came and pumped our septic tank. I really enjoyed having Marty and Tam.
July 20, 1977 - Wednesday. We left at 7AM and arrived by Marie and Hank around 11AM. She wanted us to stay for dinner, but she had such a mess, so much company, so we just had coffee and apple crisp. I couldn't see all of us staying for dinner when she had all that company. Mom stayed by Marie. We left at 12:15 in the rain. We gassed up at Abbotsford and then I drove. We arrived by Chick at 5:15. Then we took Marty home and stayed by Bill and Sharon.
July 21, 1977 - Thursday. We worked in Jim's apartment and I made supper for the 3 of us and then we went out by katie.
July 22, 1977 - Friday. We finished Jim's apartment. We put curtains up in the front room and bathrooms. It really looks homey and nice. We went to Beaver Dam to see Alfred and he wasn't home, so we went out by Edward and had a nice visit and then went back by Bill's.
July 23, 1977 - Saturday. We spent most of today by Bill and then we played cards in the afternoon. At 4PM we went by Chick's.
July 24, 1977 - Sunday. I went to church alone at 8AM and it just poured. Bill and Sharon and the kids went to 10 o'clock mass. At 11:45AM, Chick and Judy picked me up and we took the girls to Girl Scout Camp. It was really interesting. Sharon had a real good chicken dinner at nite. Then we went for a ride out by Maxine and no one was home, so we stopped at Chuck's root beer stand and went home.
July 25, 1977 - Monday. I helped Sharon wash clothes and then we went by Minnie's and Natalie was there also. Had a nice visit. Dorothy G. fixed dinner and had us stay for dinner. After dinner Alfred and Dorothy came. Dick Schwandt stopped by and as we left, Inez stopped. Katie had us out for supper. Pat and Len were there, too. We played cards and then came home.
July 26, 1977 - Tuesday. We went by Caroline at Waupun. She is definitely getting a divorce. We stopped at McDonald's and then went by Alfred's. On our way home, the car sounded funny.
July 27, 1977 - Wednesday. We took the car into Beaver Dam to get fixed. Sharon and I followed Harland and Marty in and then we came home. I put the drape up in the kitchen for Sharon and bought her a green rug for in front of the sink. Dad and Bill went in to pick up the car. We needed a new water pump. We went in to say goodbye to Chick and Judy and T.J. We went back by Bill, and Jim was there. Mabel and Bob had a nice visit. Bill and I went and checked the corn field, but it was too young.
July 28, 1977 - Thursday. Left Sharon's at 7:15AM. I sure hated to leave. Our camera didn't work. The car milage was 10,066 when we left Bill's. We arrived by Marie's around noon. We left at 1:30PM. We arrive home around 5PM. Our gas expenses were $45.60.
August 5, 1977 - George, Louise, Har, I, and Mom went to the Chicken Shack for supper and we all came home stuffed. So we played cards till 20 after 9 o'clock. Then we went to Shotsie's. Mom went along when she should have stayed home at that time of nite. I'm sure glad this month is over. I was ready to go back to Wisconsin.
August 28, 1977 - I gave Mom a permanent and she apologized for what she said.
September 1, 1977 - Thursday. Today is our Women's Club meeting.
September 2, 1977 - Friday. Took the dogs in to get clipped. Annie can't take care of Penny any more, so we're finding her a new home. After dinner, we went back and picked up Chips and stopped by George.
September 4, 1977 - Sunday. Went to church last nite. I made a mince meat pie and apple pie. Mom took us out to the Chicken Shack. We went to an auction by Shockley's. I bought a tub full of jars for $3.50 and a bed spread, single pad, 2 pillows for $1.50. We had our septic tank pumped.
September 6, 1977 - Tuesday. Went to Deerwood Bank and stopped at Crosby to see about siding. Now we have to have someone put it on.
September 7, 1977 - Wednesday. I baked a pumpkin pie and oatmeal cake, made baked potatoes and meatloaf for dinner. After dinner, we mudded out 3 1/2 bushels of potatoes. I canned 2 more quarts of tomato juice and I cut out some more aprons.
September 9, 1977 - Friday. Marie came today.
September 10, 1977 - Saturday. Went to church this eve and we went down to Pickerel. Got some small blues.
September 11, 1977 - Sunday. We went to the Chicken Shack and stopped around by George's and Louise.
September 12, 1977 - Monday. We went to Onamia and I got 24 white shirts for nite shirts for Cedarbrook. We went to Aitkin and picked up brown and powdered sugar - four for $1.00 and we went out on the launch and got 18 walleyes.
September 13, 1977 - Tuesday. We went out on the launch again. Got 11 walleyes.
September 14, 1977 - Wednesday. Went to Bay Lake, got 20 blues and 3 bullheads.
September 15, 1977 - Thursday. Washed clothes and went to Brainerd. Got pills for Mom, stopped by George and Louise. Marie got squash and baggies. At nite, Mom took us out to the Chicken Shack. We came home and played sheepshead.
September 16, 1977 - Friday. Today is Judy's birthday. Mom and Marie left this AM. I washed Marie's and all the scatter rugs. We're waiting for a call from Jim. He had surgery on his leg or knee for cartilage when it was hurt. I'm cleaning house good today.
September 17, 1977 - Saturday. Judy called this AM. Jim had surgery on Thursday and it was much more than they had figured it would be. I went to church at 5 and we went out on the launch at 7:30. Got 4 walleyes and 1 perch. Larry Walker got a nice one.
September 18, 1977 - Sunday. I transplanted my plants and brought them in before we got to Wisconsin.
September 19, 1977 - Monday. Harland went to the doctor and he is advised to have surgery. His next appointment is November 8th. I done my ironing and after dinner I baked oatmeal and peanut butter cookies, a cake and 2 squash.
September 20, 1977 - Tuesday. I froze 3 packages squash and made a piece. I am working on the white shirts for Cedarbrook and little aprons. Jim called at noon. He came home from the hospital today. He wants to see if he can stay by Bill and Sharon for awhile. I canned 6 quarts of ground cherries today.
September 21, 1977 - Wednesday. We left this AM for Horicon. Arrived by Jim's at 2:45. We all went out by Bill and Sharon.
September 22, 1977 - Thursday. We went to Beaver Dam and checked on Milton Firari's car. Then we went back late in the afternoon. We went by Alfred's for awhile and later went back and purchased the car. Then we went out by Katie's for supper.
September 23, 1977 - Friday. We went to Beaver Dam and picked up the car. There was 4,748 miles by Mars on Park Ave. I made dinner for Jim, Dad and I. Then we went out by Sharon.
September 24, 1977 - Saturday. Bill worked in the AM. Then Dad, I, Sharon and the kids went to Beaver Dam shopping. We stopped by Bob Firari's new bowling alley. It's really beautiful. We went out by Pat and Len's for supper. We played 3 games of euchre. Pat and I won 2 our of 3. We played poker after a good chicken dinner. We left at 11PM.
September 25, 1977 - Sunday. We went to 8 o'clock mass. Came home, made pancakes for breakfast. We went for a ride to Manitowoc where Bill goes salmon fishing. They really weren't swimming. In the eve we took Chick, Judy and T.J. to Hibbings for dinner and then we all went to see Bob's new bowling alley. Then we stopped by Chick and Judy's awhile and went by Bill's.
September 26, 1977 - Monday. We went up by Jim and picked up his wash and washed it all by Sharon. She washed, too. Everything really dried beautifully. Then we went by Sally and Metzie. Played 2 games of cards, had home baked rolls, coffee and went home. Bill, I and Sharon went picking hickory nuts. We didn't get too many, tho. Harland babysat.
September 27, 1977 - Tuesday. We dropped Jim's clothes off and we went out by Pat M's to pick up some frozen stuff. Harland went to the shop to see some guys. After lunch we went to Beaver Dam to pick out a refrigerator for Bill and Sharon for their Xmas present. We warmed supper up, what Darlene Sheifeffer brought over for Jim and all ate together - chicken, meatloaf, mashed potatoes, beans, pickles, corn - it was really thoughtful of Darlene.
September 28, 1977 - Wednesday. We went with Jim to Fond du Lac to the doctor. They took the bandages off and the stitches out, but he still has to be on crutches for 3 more weeks and 2 more months before he can go back to work. Bob took us all out to Hibbings. Bob, John, Katie, Williw, Jim, Dad and I. It was a nice eve till we got home. Chips got hit by a car. Sharon and her neighbor took him to the vet in Juneau and his xrays showed he had a broken pelvis. He was in pain all nite.
September 29, 1977 - Thursday. We called the vet and he said we could take him to Madison for further help, but he was paralyzed in the back as the nerves were severed. I think he was dying before we got to Madison. We couldn't see chips being an invalid the rest of his life. He went to sleep about 2:45. Then we came home. I cried all the way home. That's the hardest thing we ever had to do.
September 30, 1977 - Friday. I washed Jim's bedding at the laundromat as it was raining almost every day. Then we went to Beaver Dam to see Minnie and went out by Katie and picked up our chickens and came home. It rained all day and evening. Maxine and Warren took us out to Jones' Supper Club to eat. The chicken was good, but Harland and Warren got a screwing on their perch.
October 1, 1977 - Saturday. Bill had to work all day for inventory. Harland rode along with Jim to see how duck and goose hunting were going. We went by Sally and Clarence Metzdorf for supper.
October 2, 1977 - Sunday. We went to 10 o'clock mass and we came home and played dirty clubs. Had a bite to eat and we played sheepshead. At 4:00 Bill started the grill. We had chicken, potato salad, etc. Jim was out for supper. Sharon asked Judy, but she refused. Judy called after 8PM so we talked to Chick and Tam, also.
October 3, 1977 - Monday. We left Bill and Sharon's at 8:10AM. Arrived Marie at 1PM. We had dinner and then went to Ladysmith and got a permanent and I cut her hair and put in the permanent. I got a pair of black shoes. Then we cleaned 3 ducks and ate supper.
October 4, 1977 - Tuesday. Left Marie's at 8AM. Arrived home at 12 noon. Mom didn't miss Chips till we were on this side of Milaca. I took 2 dozen cookies and we had our monthly birthday party at Cedarbrook. Susan picked me up. After the party we took George and Louise's bushel of apples over. George was hunting. As we were leaving, he came home. We're just resting up now after our 2 week vacation.
October 7, 1977 - Thursday. We had our Women's Club meeting. I took apple crisp for dessert. After we came home, I went over and talked to Betty who was sick.
October 8, 1977 - Friday. Jim is supposed to come today. I made the bed up on the porch for him, but the weather is really nasty. Rain and strong winds. Alexandria had snow today, but ours was just rain and cold. I sure miss Chips. It's so lonesome without him.
October 11, 1977 - Monday. Jim came this afternoon about 3:30. He brought a wild goose. He has to use his crutches when he goes up and down stairs, but he doesn't use them on the level. He's doing real good.
October 12, 1977 - Wednesday. I went to Brainerd shopping. Harland and Jim went over by George. Mom slept.
October 14, 1977 - Friday. Dad, Jim and George went to Big Mine Lake. Didn't even get a nibble.
October 16, 1977 - Sunday. Mom, Jim and I went to 10:30 mass and then Mom wanted to go to the Chicken Shack for dinner, so Dad, I and Mom went by Ray and Gloria's, picked up 2 sticks of pork sausage - one for us and Maria. $7.20 a stick. We played sheepshead and we're teaching Gloria how.
October 17, 1977 - Monday. Jim left at 8:15AM. We hated to see him go, but he has a doctor appointment Wednesday AM. We're putting the motor away and cleaning up the garage and fish house.
October 29, 1977 - Saturday. After mail time, we left for Marie's.
October 30, 1977 - Sunday. Mom and I went to 11 o'clock mass at Tony. Harley and Billy were there. They were going to take a couple beef cattle along, but they were out in the pasture and kinda wild, so he settled for a couple calves. We brought back the rest of our apples.
October 31, 1977 - Monday. Hank, Marie, Mom, Harland and I went to Eau Claire shopping. Maire bought a new medicine cabinet at Menard's Lumber.
November 1, 1977 - Tuesday. We left Marie's at 9AM. We brought home 2 white kittens for Betty and Ken.
November 3, 1977 - Thursday. I was hostess for Women's Club today and elected secretary in place of Delores Marks who went to work at State hospital for IBM.
November 11, 1977 - Saturday. Susan and I went to Cambridge and got medicine for Mom at a discount from Senior Citizen Federation and then received a 5% discount on her total bill.
November 19, 1977 - Saturday. I went along to Minneapolis on the bus for Xmas shopping. We really enjoyed it and it snowed before we came home.
November 24, 1977 - Thanksgiving Day. I fixed a wild goose and chicken and Louise brought bean salad, onion, radish, and garlic bread and blueberry pie. We had a nice day.
November 27, 1977 - We got 6 inches of snow last nite.
November 28, 1977 - Sunday. I called Jim and he got an 8 point buck at 10 after 7 on opening day. He's coming along real good after surgery. The doctor thought he could go to work in the middle of December. He won a 16 lb turkey and will bring it along for Xmas.
December 2, 1977 - Friday AM we left for Marie's after mail time to pick up our beef. I got my permanent in then, too. We came home December 4th in a snow storm from Barron WI till we got home. Sometimes you couldn't see anything. 10 guys, including Chick and Jim, were up here already. They stayed at Picture Window.
December 6, 1977 - I canned 10 quarts of beef and I'm cooking up soup bones. They pulled Harland's fish house off of the lake. It sure has been cold this week. Today it was -30 degrees.
December 11, 1977 - George and Louise came over and we played cards. Then the guys went fishing. I cut Louise's hair and she washed it. Then Mr. Paige came and put a new pump on our pump, so we should try it for awhile. When he left, Louise and I made a batch of sea foam. George got 1 walleye. We ate supper, played a couple more games of cards and then they went home.
December 23, 1977 - Friday. Was sure surprised when Bill and Sharon were here around 7PM. They were coming tomorrow, but better this way.
December 24, 1977 - Saturday. Bob, John, and Jim came today. We are going to have Jim's 16 lb turkey on Xmas day. John is 15 years old today.
December 25, 1977 - Sunday. Christmas Day. Chick, Judy and T.J. couldn't come. We had a nice day all being together. George and Louise were here, too. They gave Harland a shirt, me a crocheted dresser set. We really had a nice day.
December 26, 1977 - Monday. Took John to the hospital with a nose bleed. We came home at 20 to 12:00 waiting for the doctor to come. John had a fever all the time he was here and such a sore throat.
December 29, 1977 - Bob, John and Jim left this morning at 9:15AM. Bill and Sharon and the kids left at 10AM. They didn't get a fish to keep while they were here and they fished 4 different lakes.
December 31, 1977 - Katie called and the doctor put him in the hospital, so maybe he should get some relief from chest pains, sore throat and fever. Today is George's birthday. He is 54 years old. Louise will fix oysters for them and I fixed chicken as Harland I don't eat oysters. We played 26 games of "500". Louise and I won 14. Harland and George won 12. We had a real nice day.
September 7, 1977 - Wednesday. I baked a pumpkin pie and oatmeal cake, made baked potatoes and meatloaf for dinner. After dinner, we mudded out 3 1/2 bushels of potatoes. I canned 2 more quarts of tomato juice and I cut out some more aprons.
September 9, 1977 - Friday. Marie came today.
September 10, 1977 - Saturday. Went to church this eve and we went down to Pickerel. Got some small blues.
September 11, 1977 - Sunday. We went to the Chicken Shack and stopped around by George's and Louise.
September 12, 1977 - Monday. We went to Onamia and I got 24 white shirts for nite shirts for Cedarbrook. We went to Aitkin and picked up brown and powdered sugar - four for $1.00 and we went out on the launch and got 18 walleyes.
September 13, 1977 - Tuesday. We went out on the launch again. Got 11 walleyes.
September 14, 1977 - Wednesday. Went to Bay Lake, got 20 blues and 3 bullheads.
September 15, 1977 - Thursday. Washed clothes and went to Brainerd. Got pills for Mom, stopped by George and Louise. Marie got squash and baggies. At nite, Mom took us out to the Chicken Shack. We came home and played sheepshead.
September 16, 1977 - Friday. Today is Judy's birthday. Mom and Marie left this AM. I washed Marie's and all the scatter rugs. We're waiting for a call from Jim. He had surgery on his leg or knee for cartilage when it was hurt. I'm cleaning house good today.
September 17, 1977 - Saturday. Judy called this AM. Jim had surgery on Thursday and it was much more than they had figured it would be. I went to church at 5 and we went out on the launch at 7:30. Got 4 walleyes and 1 perch. Larry Walker got a nice one.
September 18, 1977 - Sunday. I transplanted my plants and brought them in before we got to Wisconsin.
September 19, 1977 - Monday. Harland went to the doctor and he is advised to have surgery. His next appointment is November 8th. I done my ironing and after dinner I baked oatmeal and peanut butter cookies, a cake and 2 squash.
September 20, 1977 - Tuesday. I froze 3 packages squash and made a piece. I am working on the white shirts for Cedarbrook and little aprons. Jim called at noon. He came home from the hospital today. He wants to see if he can stay by Bill and Sharon for awhile. I canned 6 quarts of ground cherries today.
September 21, 1977 - Wednesday. We left this AM for Horicon. Arrived by Jim's at 2:45. We all went out by Bill and Sharon.
September 22, 1977 - Thursday. We went to Beaver Dam and checked on Milton Firari's car. Then we went back late in the afternoon. We went by Alfred's for awhile and later went back and purchased the car. Then we went out by Katie's for supper.
September 23, 1977 - Friday. We went to Beaver Dam and picked up the car. There was 4,748 miles by Mars on Park Ave. I made dinner for Jim, Dad and I. Then we went out by Sharon.
September 24, 1977 - Saturday. Bill worked in the AM. Then Dad, I, Sharon and the kids went to Beaver Dam shopping. We stopped by Bob Firari's new bowling alley. It's really beautiful. We went out by Pat and Len's for supper. We played 3 games of euchre. Pat and I won 2 our of 3. We played poker after a good chicken dinner. We left at 11PM.
September 25, 1977 - Sunday. We went to 8 o'clock mass. Came home, made pancakes for breakfast. We went for a ride to Manitowoc where Bill goes salmon fishing. They really weren't swimming. In the eve we took Chick, Judy and T.J. to Hibbings for dinner and then we all went to see Bob's new bowling alley. Then we stopped by Chick and Judy's awhile and went by Bill's.
September 26, 1977 - Monday. We went up by Jim and picked up his wash and washed it all by Sharon. She washed, too. Everything really dried beautifully. Then we went by Sally and Metzie. Played 2 games of cards, had home baked rolls, coffee and went home. Bill, I and Sharon went picking hickory nuts. We didn't get too many, tho. Harland babysat.
September 27, 1977 - Tuesday. We dropped Jim's clothes off and we went out by Pat M's to pick up some frozen stuff. Harland went to the shop to see some guys. After lunch we went to Beaver Dam to pick out a refrigerator for Bill and Sharon for their Xmas present. We warmed supper up, what Darlene Sheifeffer brought over for Jim and all ate together - chicken, meatloaf, mashed potatoes, beans, pickles, corn - it was really thoughtful of Darlene.
September 28, 1977 - Wednesday. We went with Jim to Fond du Lac to the doctor. They took the bandages off and the stitches out, but he still has to be on crutches for 3 more weeks and 2 more months before he can go back to work. Bob took us all out to Hibbings. Bob, John, Katie, Williw, Jim, Dad and I. It was a nice eve till we got home. Chips got hit by a car. Sharon and her neighbor took him to the vet in Juneau and his xrays showed he had a broken pelvis. He was in pain all nite.
September 29, 1977 - Thursday. We called the vet and he said we could take him to Madison for further help, but he was paralyzed in the back as the nerves were severed. I think he was dying before we got to Madison. We couldn't see chips being an invalid the rest of his life. He went to sleep about 2:45. Then we came home. I cried all the way home. That's the hardest thing we ever had to do.
September 30, 1977 - Friday. I washed Jim's bedding at the laundromat as it was raining almost every day. Then we went to Beaver Dam to see Minnie and went out by Katie and picked up our chickens and came home. It rained all day and evening. Maxine and Warren took us out to Jones' Supper Club to eat. The chicken was good, but Harland and Warren got a screwing on their perch.
October 1, 1977 - Saturday. Bill had to work all day for inventory. Harland rode along with Jim to see how duck and goose hunting were going. We went by Sally and Clarence Metzdorf for supper.
October 2, 1977 - Sunday. We went to 10 o'clock mass and we came home and played dirty clubs. Had a bite to eat and we played sheepshead. At 4:00 Bill started the grill. We had chicken, potato salad, etc. Jim was out for supper. Sharon asked Judy, but she refused. Judy called after 8PM so we talked to Chick and Tam, also.
October 3, 1977 - Monday. We left Bill and Sharon's at 8:10AM. Arrived Marie at 1PM. We had dinner and then went to Ladysmith and got a permanent and I cut her hair and put in the permanent. I got a pair of black shoes. Then we cleaned 3 ducks and ate supper.
October 4, 1977 - Tuesday. Left Marie's at 8AM. Arrived home at 12 noon. Mom didn't miss Chips till we were on this side of Milaca. I took 2 dozen cookies and we had our monthly birthday party at Cedarbrook. Susan picked me up. After the party we took George and Louise's bushel of apples over. George was hunting. As we were leaving, he came home. We're just resting up now after our 2 week vacation.
October 7, 1977 - Thursday. We had our Women's Club meeting. I took apple crisp for dessert. After we came home, I went over and talked to Betty who was sick.
October 8, 1977 - Friday. Jim is supposed to come today. I made the bed up on the porch for him, but the weather is really nasty. Rain and strong winds. Alexandria had snow today, but ours was just rain and cold. I sure miss Chips. It's so lonesome without him.
October 11, 1977 - Monday. Jim came this afternoon about 3:30. He brought a wild goose. He has to use his crutches when he goes up and down stairs, but he doesn't use them on the level. He's doing real good.
October 12, 1977 - Wednesday. I went to Brainerd shopping. Harland and Jim went over by George. Mom slept.
October 14, 1977 - Friday. Dad, Jim and George went to Big Mine Lake. Didn't even get a nibble.
October 16, 1977 - Sunday. Mom, Jim and I went to 10:30 mass and then Mom wanted to go to the Chicken Shack for dinner, so Dad, I and Mom went by Ray and Gloria's, picked up 2 sticks of pork sausage - one for us and Maria. $7.20 a stick. We played sheepshead and we're teaching Gloria how.
October 17, 1977 - Monday. Jim left at 8:15AM. We hated to see him go, but he has a doctor appointment Wednesday AM. We're putting the motor away and cleaning up the garage and fish house.
October 29, 1977 - Saturday. After mail time, we left for Marie's.
October 30, 1977 - Sunday. Mom and I went to 11 o'clock mass at Tony. Harley and Billy were there. They were going to take a couple beef cattle along, but they were out in the pasture and kinda wild, so he settled for a couple calves. We brought back the rest of our apples.
October 31, 1977 - Monday. Hank, Marie, Mom, Harland and I went to Eau Claire shopping. Maire bought a new medicine cabinet at Menard's Lumber.
November 1, 1977 - Tuesday. We left Marie's at 9AM. We brought home 2 white kittens for Betty and Ken.
November 3, 1977 - Thursday. I was hostess for Women's Club today and elected secretary in place of Delores Marks who went to work at State hospital for IBM.
November 11, 1977 - Saturday. Susan and I went to Cambridge and got medicine for Mom at a discount from Senior Citizen Federation and then received a 5% discount on her total bill.
November 19, 1977 - Saturday. I went along to Minneapolis on the bus for Xmas shopping. We really enjoyed it and it snowed before we came home.
November 24, 1977 - Thanksgiving Day. I fixed a wild goose and chicken and Louise brought bean salad, onion, radish, and garlic bread and blueberry pie. We had a nice day.
November 27, 1977 - We got 6 inches of snow last nite.
November 28, 1977 - Sunday. I called Jim and he got an 8 point buck at 10 after 7 on opening day. He's coming along real good after surgery. The doctor thought he could go to work in the middle of December. He won a 16 lb turkey and will bring it along for Xmas.
December 2, 1977 - Friday AM we left for Marie's after mail time to pick up our beef. I got my permanent in then, too. We came home December 4th in a snow storm from Barron WI till we got home. Sometimes you couldn't see anything. 10 guys, including Chick and Jim, were up here already. They stayed at Picture Window.
December 6, 1977 - I canned 10 quarts of beef and I'm cooking up soup bones. They pulled Harland's fish house off of the lake. It sure has been cold this week. Today it was -30 degrees.
December 11, 1977 - George and Louise came over and we played cards. Then the guys went fishing. I cut Louise's hair and she washed it. Then Mr. Paige came and put a new pump on our pump, so we should try it for awhile. When he left, Louise and I made a batch of sea foam. George got 1 walleye. We ate supper, played a couple more games of cards and then they went home.
December 23, 1977 - Friday. Was sure surprised when Bill and Sharon were here around 7PM. They were coming tomorrow, but better this way.
December 24, 1977 - Saturday. Bob, John, and Jim came today. We are going to have Jim's 16 lb turkey on Xmas day. John is 15 years old today.
December 25, 1977 - Sunday. Christmas Day. Chick, Judy and T.J. couldn't come. We had a nice day all being together. George and Louise were here, too. They gave Harland a shirt, me a crocheted dresser set. We really had a nice day.
