January 2, 1978 - Monday. We went over to Cedarbrook for volunteer work - Susan, Elsie, Doris and I. We took our tree down when I came home.
January 3, 1978 - Tuesday. We went to the bank and after dinner I called Dr. Bissinger for Mom as she has been having back trouble. Doctor told me she should move around more like sitting on a chair and getting up oftener and take Tylenol for pain and watch her weight.
January 7, 1978 - Saturday. Had Dena and Red over for fish fry - walleye and crappies. They really enjoyed it. It really turned cold. -22 to -25 in the AM.
January 9, 1978 - Monday. I tied the blue and white quilt and started the crazy quilt. Tammy had her concert which was postponed because of weather conditions. Wish I was there.
January 13, 1978 - Friday. Hubert Humphrey passed away from cancer. He sure looked rough at Christmas time.
January 15, 1978 - Sunday. I went to church last nite and I made 4 apple pies and 2 apple crisps. That takes care of the apples. We only have 2 inches of snow and cold. I bought 4 new guppies on Thursday.
January 18, 1978 - I gave Mom a permanent.
January 20, 1978 - I cut Mom's hair this AM and then Harland and I went with George and Susan to Aitkin Golden Age. I made Collette a quilt top from 4 inch squares print and put it together with a deep pink. It's really pretty. I made 3 lap robes for Cedarbrook.
February 2, 1978 - Thursday. We had our Ladies' Aid meeting at Mabel Anderson's home and made Valentines for Cedarbrook.
February 3, 1978 - Friday. We went to the bank and on into Brainerd. Had our income tax made out. We have to pay $50.00 to State. We made out the long form at H&R Block. They charged $20.00 for services.
February 5, 1978 - Sunday. George and Louise came over and we played cards. I made cherry pie, chicken, baked potatoes and salad for supper.
February 6, 1978 - Monday. Harland went to the doctor at 8:15AM and then we went around by George and Louise and told them what the doctor had said. Then he dropped me off at Cedarbrook for our monthly work day. Harland picked me up at 1:00PM from Cedarbrook and he went to the hospital to get ready for surgery in the AM.
February 7, 1978 - Tuesday. I left home at 9AM. They took Harland up at 10:35 and brought him down at 12:20. He has an IV and bottles of sodium chloride to flush out his bladder. 8 bottles all tolled. The numbness is still there. He can't wiggle his toes. It's been over 3 hours. Dr. Smith says it will go out all at once.
February 10, 1978 - Friday. Dr. Smith took the tubes out today and everything is coming good.
February 11, 1978 - Saturday. Went to Brainerd shopping and then into Crosby to see Harland. Doc says maybe he can come home tomorrow. I went to church at 5PM and Evelyn Olson came over. She went home after 10PM.
February 12, 1978 - Sunday. Harland came home this AM. He's doing real good.
February 13, 1978 - Monday. I mailed our nursery order out. 2 cherry trees, 3 blueberries, sweet onions, pepper seed, flowering almond bush, tuberous begonia bulbs, 1 yellow rose bush. I started cleaning cupboards today.
February 14, 1978 - Tuesday. I baked 2 loaves of bread and washed the kitchen walls and woodwork.
February 15, 1978 - Wednesday. I started washing walls on the porch and Betty and Ken came over to see Harland. I made dinner and washed dishes and then Evelyn Olson came over and when she left, I washed some more, made supper, that's it. I talked to Bill and Sharon, told them Dad came home Sunday and to let the rest of the kids know.
February 16, 1978 - Thursday. I finished washing walls and windows and carpeting. Made 3 apple pies, one for us, Dena, and a small one for Evelyn.
February 17, 1978 - Friday. I'm washing Mom's blankets and the rest of the washing, including curtains. I sent for drapes and a matching spread for Bill and Sharon.
February 18, 1978 - Saturday. I'm washing walls on the porch and floor and carpeting. Went to church tonite.
February 19, 1978 - Sunday. I done my ironing and put the curtains and drapes up. Cec called today.
February 20, 1978 - Monday. I shampooed the kitchen carpeting today.
February 21, 1978 - Tuesday. I baked 3 loaves of bread and frosted chocolate cookies. I gave Betty a loaf and some cookies and cleaned the rest of the house.
February 22, 1978 - Wednesday. I washed my hair, made the poppy seed torte for our card party tonite. George Forester won 1st for the men. Susan Forester won for the women. Ann Knudsen won booby prize. We had a nice time.
February 23, 1978 - Thursday. I went to the hospital to see Louise. She has bronchitis with her asthma, but she is coming along good. I took Mom to the doctor on the 17th for her rash. The medicine the doctor gave her is too strong. It makes her dizzy. Mom fell, but just bruises. I also took her to the foot doctor. I house cleaned the kitchen and porch this past week.
February 26, 1978 - Sunday. Goldie Brown passed away today.
February 27, 1978 - Went to Senior Citizen and joined at Deerwood. They're planning a trip to Minneapolis for the Ice Follies on March 31st.
March 2, 1978 - We had our Aid meeting today.
March 6, 1978 - Monday. Susa, Doris and I did volunteer work at Cedarbrook, then we went over and visited Ann Maghan after her breast surgery. She's doing real good.
March 8, 1978 - Wednesday. Marty is 6 years old today.
March 9, 1978 - Thursday. Chick is 36 years old today.
March 10, 1978 - Friday. Ken, Betty, Joe, Harland and I went to Clearwater crappy fishing. We got 24.
March 11, 1978 - Saturday. We picked George up and went fishing at Clearwater again and we got 30.
March 12, 1978 - Sunday. Harland smoked 19 crappy today. I done some baking.
March 13, 1978 - Monday. I finished my ironing and done some sewing. We got 6 inches of snow. The most we got all winter.
March 14, 1978 - Tuesday. Harland went to see Dr. Smith. He's doing real good.
March 16, 1978 - Thursday. I washed clothes and ironed and cleaned house.
March 17, 1978 - Friday. St. Patrick's Day. George, Susan and us went to Golden Age at Aitkin and then we visited Mrs. Seymour at the nursing home.
March 18, 1978 - Saturday. Harland and I went shopping and we stopped by Super Valu to see Grace to see if Mike would put a roof and siding on the house. She thought he would. I went over by Susan and she trimmed my hair up in the back and I cut hers. It turned out real good. We're both satisfied. I went to church tonite.
March 19, 1978 - Sunday. I baked 3 pumpkin pies. One for Evelyn Olson, Betty and us and made a bowl of jello.
March 22, 1978 - Wednesday. I washed the cars and sewed on aprons. Betty will sell them for me this summer. Went to Aitkin. Got 200 yards of lace.
March 24, 1978 - Good Friday. I went to church at 3PM. I made 3 lap robes for Cedarbrook. 8 all tolled.
March 25, 1978 - Saturday. We trimmed along the bank and burned it off. I went to church at 5:00PM.
March 26, 1978 - Easter Sunday. I baked an angel food cake. Father Brennan brought communion to Mom at 11:30AM. After he left, we went to Brainerd to Log Cabin and had Easter dinner and then we came home.
March 27, 1978 - Monday. I washed and ironed today and took Mom's electric blanket off.
March 28, 1978 - Tuesday. We all went to Deerwood Senior Citizen today. We took Evelyn Olson along and she joined. We had a good time.
March 29, 1978 - Wednesday. I ironed a couple doilies and cut out more aprons. We had card club by George and Susan. Elsie and Howard won 1st.
March 30, 1978 - Thursday. I planted 7 tuberous begonias today.
March 31, 1978 - Friday. We went to Minneapolis to the Follies. It was beautiful and such a nice day.
April 2, 1978 - Sunday. We had an ice storm, so we didn't take Mom out to eat.
April 3, 1978 - Monday. We done our volunteer work at Cedarbrook today, sewing, and one-to-one.
April 4, 1978 - Tuesday. We're going out to eat tonite. Max called. Louise's sister passed away yesterday at 9PM of a heart attack. Louise left this afternoon for Chicago. I planted 3 tuberous begonia bulbs.
April 12, 1978 - Wednesday. Harland's birthday. 69 years old. We left for Wisconsin at 20 minutes to 11. Arrived by Marie at 2:20PM.
April 13, 1978 - Thursday. Left Marie at 8:15AM. Mom stayed with Marie. We went to Kraft to see Katie. She was working nites, but talked to Willie. We went to Horicon. I stayed up by Jim's. Dad went over and talked to Chick and then we went out by Bill's. They were grocery shopping. We watched TV. They were surprised.
April 14, 1978 - Friday. Harland went to the Pyramid and I went up by Jim's and done his laundry and cleaned his apartment.
April 15, 1978 - Saturday. Tam and I went to Beaver Dam, done some shopping for her. She got a swim suit, short and top. We went out by Maxine Bilke. Then we ate at McDonald's and came home.
April 16, 1978 - Sunday. We went to church at 8 o'clock mass. Baked Collette's birthday cake, played "500", then Grandpa H. and Irish came and we went to Bonzo's to eat and then we came home.
April 17, 1978 - Monday. We went to Minnie and Alfred's for dinner. Came back, had supper at Bill's and played cards.
April 18, 1978 - Tuesday. Sharon, kids, Dad and I went to Horicon to dime store, bank and grocery store. Came home, ate lunch, took a nap, went by Sally and Metzie, but they weren't home. We went by Jim's, took him out by Katie for supper. Had a real nice time. We played sheepshead, the 6 of us, Pat, Len, Jim, I, Della, and Willie. Len backed off in the ditch, Willie pulled him out. We went home, dropped Jim off as his car was being fixed.
April 19, 1978 - Wednesday.We left Bill's at 7:35AM.
April 20, 1978 - Thursday. We picked Mom up and left Marie's at 9AM. She sent sweet rolls, doughnuts, apples, an African violet along with 8 dozen eggs. We gassed up at Barron. Got home at 1:20PM.
April 21, 1978 - Friday. We started raking the lawn and then it rained.
April 23, 1978 - Sunday. We took a cake over to Emma Plotte. Her husband passed away.
April 24, 1978 - Monday. We went to the funeral and Susan, Kay, I and Elsie served the mourners at the Echo school house. The ice went out of Borden Lake today.
April 25, 1978 - Tuesday. Went to Deerwood to Senior Citizens. Harland had a doctor appointment so Mom and I rode with Leons. I raked more this evening.
April 26, 1978 - Wednesday. I put out 2 washings.
April 27, 1978 - Thursday. I finished raking and we burned the bank. It really looks nice.
April 29, 1978 - Saturday. I baked 5 loaves of bread, 1 pan bars, 2 blueberry pies, 2 apple pies, 1 apple crisp for Dena. I went to 5 o'clock mass.
May 1, 1978 - Sunday. Made dinner, fixed Jim's pants and made 1 more lap robe. That's 11 in all. I painted the tire flower pots white.
May 4, 1978 - Thursday. We went to club. Mom and I went to church. Ascension Day.
May 5, 1978 - Friday. I started painting the inside john white and green. Painted the back screen door.
May 7, 1978 - Sunday. I made 5 apple pies, 1 rhubarb, 4 for Dena, baked 3 loaves of bread and fixed Swiss steak. We took Mom out to eat at the Chicken Shack for Mother's Day. Then we went to Isle to see Joe Lindholm. Had a real enjoyable afternoon.
May 9, 1978 - Tuesday. Katie called. They can't come as Willie has to work. His superior is in the hospital.
May 14, 1978 - Sunday. We had a quiet Mother's Day. Bill and Sharon called. Hank called saying Marie was in the hospital Cec called. Had a beautiful card from Chick and Judy with $5.00 and a beautiful card from Jim.
May 16, 1978 - Tuesday. We planted 2 cherry trees, 3 blueberries, 1 grape, 1 yellow rose bush. I and Susan went to R.S.V.P dinner in Brainerd. It was very good. Del started the roof today. I set out 19 tomato plants and broccoli.
May 17, 1978 - Wednesday. I washed all the rugs and shampooed kitchen carpeting.
May 18, 1978 - Thursday. Jim called and he can't get off work to come up with Chick and Reggie. Harland planted our glads and I set out the snap dragons and 29 more tomato plants. Marie called. She just got out of the hospital. Del has 4 new windows in.
May 19, 1978 - Friday. I washed the new windows and cleaned up the mess.
May 20, 1978 - Saturday. Chick and Marvin Rogenbauer arrived at 1:30AM. They got 18 walleyes and 4 perch.
May 21, 1978 - Sunday. Chick and Marvin got 44 perch in the AM and 18 walleyes and 5 perch at night. The kids went over by George to get some leeches and minnows. Dad and I went over by Kevin's graduation. I planted out house plants in the 2 gold planters and side of the garage.
May 22, 1978 - Monday. I washed clothes and started to mow lawn and trim.
May 24, 1978 - Wednesday. Del finished the windows and I started to varnish and paint.
May 25, 1978 - Thursday. Went to Brainerd and paid taxes and had the land behind us recorded that we got from Unruh's. Chick and Marvin had 300 perch and 76 walleyes.
May 26, 1978 - Friday. Chick and Marvin left at 20 to 9 loaded with goodies. I washed clothes and painted more windows and put the drapes up in Mom's room.
May 27, 1978 - Saturday. I cleaned up the house and had George and Susan over for fish fry and I went to 5 o'clock mass.
May 29, 1978 - Monday. I finished painting the windows inside on May 31st. I washed clothes in the house and ironed in between showers. It rained all week. Marie came today.
June 1, 1978 - Thursday. We went to club.
June 2, 1978 - Friday. I got my permanent yesterday and dyed my hair today.
June 3, 1978 - Saturday. George and Louise took Mom, Marie, Hon and I to Harold's Club. Bill and Sharon came today. Harland, I and Mom went to George and Susan's 50th wedding anniversary at Deerwood.
June 6, 1978 - Tuesday. Marie took us to the Chicken Shack. It was really good.
June 7, 1978 - Wednesday. I had a real nice birthday. Mom gave me a pair of sheets, Marie $10.00, Bill and Sharon $10.00, Jim called tonite. Him, Wayne and Todd are coming after work Friday nite.
June 9, 1978 - Friday. Del finished the house.
June 10, 1978 - Saturday. Jim, Wayne and Todd got here at 2AM. Wayne got lost. Bill and Sharon and Collette left at 10AM and they got home at 5:30. Marie and I went to 7:30PM mass.
June 11, 1978 - Sunday. Marie left at 8:45AM. Arrived home at 12:30. We finished planting our begonias, mums and apple tree that George and Louise gave us and our flowering crab. Jim, Wayne and Todd aren't having much luck fishing.
June 12, 1978 - Monday. Dad, Jim and Wayne went to Big Mine this AM.
June 14, 1978 - Wednesday. We went to the bank and got a Marty a hair cut and a swimming pool. After supper we went down and paid Del for the material and his wages.
June 15, 1978 - Thursday. It's still raining. I finished our bathroom curtains and 1 for the porch.
June 16, 1978 - Friday. Went to Brainerd shopping and for supper we went to Seguchie's for walleye. It was V.G.
June 17, 1978 - Saturday. I cleaned the house and changed the bedding. Went to church.
June 22, 1978 - Thursday. I started to paint the house. I got the west side done and it rained again.
June 23, 1978 - Friday. Sharon called. Katie and Willie got married June 19th. We had Unruh's and Jeff Walker over for fish fry that Harland got Thursday at Big Mine.
June 24, 1978 - Saturday. Harland and I and Red picked strawberries. We got 5 boxes for $23.90 and Red 2 boxes. I put 20 boxes of strawberries in the freezer and made 4 batches of jam and we ate plenty. Marty and I went to 5 o'clock mass. Ray was over tonite for awhile. He gave Mom a $30.00 check.
June 25, 1978 - Sunday. We got 1/2 inch rain again. Jim came at 3:35. We wrapped Maria's birthday gift. She will be 2 years old on Tuesday.
July 1, 1978 - Saturday. Bill and Sharon came at 1:30AM. They drove in rain from Mayville to Onamia. Sharon and I took the kids to see Paul Bunyan. The kids went home July 6th.
July 7, 1978 - Friday. Jim left this AM. We had our club picnic at Hammels. I washed 6 sheets and 1,282 blankets, etc.
July 8, 1978 - Saturday. It sure rained again. The kids got 380 fish all tolled. They went to Turner Lake and had real good luck. Jim had a lot of nice perch he got before Bill and Sharon came. They (Dad and Jim) fished Mille Lacs.
July 9, 1978 - Sunday. Today Tam is 12 years old.
July 10, 1978 - Monday. I washed clothes again, cleaned out the inside of the car and defrosted the refrigerator in the garage. I made dinner, defrosted the big freezer in the garage and washed the car.
July 11, 1978 - Tuesday. I got my ironing all caught up.
July 14, 1978 - Friday. Bob and John came around 3:30PM. We went down to Seguchie's for fish fry. Bob treated.
July 15, 1978 - Saturday. Harland, Bob and John went over by George, but they went to Crosby. I went to 5:00 mass.
July 16, 1978 - Sunday. Bob and John went to 10:30 mass. I fixed the turtle and we had Evelyn over, too. She really enjoyed it. Gloria, Ray, and Cec were over.
July 18, 1978 - Tuesday. Bob and John left after 9:15. Bob left $100.00. I washed clothes, ironed and canned 4 quarts of peaches.
July 19, 1978 - Wednesday. I cleaned out the shower stall, painted the front of the house, made lunch, finished the front of the house, canned 8 pints of beans, 3 quarts of peached and picked raspberries. We've been going to Crow Wing River and have done real good in limit of bass.
July 20, 1978 - Thursday. We went to Grand Rapids thru the paper mill and seen the program on the boat. Had a smorgasborg for supper. It was delicious. Got home at 10 to 1AM. Had a real good day.
July 21, 1978 - Friday. Chick, Judy and Tam stopped on their way back from out West. They stayed over night and left Saturday AM in the rain.
July 27, 1978 - Thursday. We went shopping and put a new battery in the fire alarm. $6.28. I am canning 2 1/2 quarts of beans. 16 quarts so far.
July 29, 1978 - Saturday. I finished painting with the roller cleaned up the house. Cec and Gloria came over and we figured out our picnic. I went to 5 o'clock mass. Made potato salad, sloppy joe's and a cake.
July 30, 1978 - Sunday. Larry, Red, Harland and I went to Crow Wing River at 5:30AM. We got 8 bass. Made lunch, cleaned fish and packed the car. Harland took a short nap. We met Ray, Gloria and Cec over to Crow Wing Park. Had our picnic. Then Cec, Gloria and Mom went by Gloria's and we went fishing. We got 9 bass and 1 walleye. Took Ray home and picked up Mom and came home. Cleaned fish.
July 31, 1978 - Monday. I scraped all the fish and we picked beans and I canned 8 more pins and I made a batch of peach and raspberry jam. I froze 2 cartons and saved a bowl for eating. I painted around the back door and Harland painted the screen door and put in a new screen and then we went over and played Tripley at Unruh's. I won quite a few pennies.
August 1, 1978 - Tuesday. Washed clothes, had Dena, Red and Debbie over for fish fry.
August 2, 1978 - Wednesday. I made another batch of peach and raspberry jam and I canned 4 1/2 quarts of peaches for sauce. After dinner I washed my hair and we went over by Susan and she cut it for me. Then we played cards and she was bound we stay for supper. Then we came home and picked beans and raspberries. I canned 3 more quarts and I have 23 quarts so far.
August 3, 1978 - Thursday. We went to club today and the bank. We mowed lawn and cleaned out the sweet onions and I picked up rocks from the back garden and where Harland mows grass on Clem's.
August 4, 1978 - Friday. I ironed this AM. Marie called about picking pears by Ginger in Madison. We're taking Mom to the foot doctor this afternoon and shopped.
August 5, 1978 - Saturday. Today Charlotte got married. Harland and I went out to eat at Lumbertown. I made 5 loaves of zucchini bread, fixed a beef roast. It was really delicious at Lumbertown. We stopped by Del to find out about shutters.
August 6, 1978 - Sunday. I baked a banana cake, 4 loaves of banana bread and made banana cream pudding for dinner. I'm going to 10:30 mass. Pope Paul VI passed away this afternoon. This past week Tootie Fields died of cancer and Frank Fontaine died of a heart attack.
August 7, 1978 - Monday. I washed clothes this AM and then went to Cedarbrook for volunteer work.
August 8, 1978 - Tuesday. I left at 7:10AM for Marie's to go to Madison and pick pears. We arrived by Ginger about 5:30. Went to Heritage House and had smorgasborg. Went to Kmart shopping and then we went to the nursing home where Ginger worked and Marie met that one old gal she corresponds with and then we went back to Gingers and played a few cards and went to bed.
August 9, 1978 - Wednesday. Went and picked pears. There must have been 25 trees loaded. We went back by Ginger, made some ham sandwiches, ate, and left for Horicon. We stopped by Katie and Willie, Jim, Chick and Judy, but they weren't home, so we went out by Bill's. Went and picked corn. Bill went to a meeting and when he came home we played cards.
August 10, 1978 - Thursday. Left after we dropped Sharon off at work and the kids up by the babysitters. We picked up our bushel of apples and started for Marie's. I left Marie's at 5 to 3:00 and got home at 7PM.
August 11, 1978 - Friday. I took care of the corn, what the 'coons didn't wreck. I've been canning pears every day.
August 15, 1978 - Tuesday. We went to church at 7:30PM. I canned more pears. I have 20 quarts so far. 6 for Chick.
August 17, 1978 - Thursday. Harland and I went to the fair and then ate at Perkins, done our shopping and came home.
August 18, 1978 - Friday. I finished the pears. 26 1/2 quarts all tolled. Then we went to Aitkin Golden Age. Margaret Niermann (Dena's mother) went along.
August 21, 1978 - Monday. Grace Lieon, Evelyn Oleson, Margaret Nierman, and myself fixed flowers for centerpieces.
August 22, 1978 - Tuesday. We served dinner at Deerwood today. There were ? people in attendance.
August 23, 1978 - Wednesday. Marie called. She is coming the 28th or the 29th.
August 24, 1978 - Thursday. George and Louise were over. We played cards. George and Louise were over for supper.
August 25, 1978 - Friday. Jim is 25 years old today. I shampooed kitchen carpeting today.
August 26, 1978 - Saturday. I went to 5 PM mass. We have a new pope. Pope John Paul I. Harland and I, Dena and Debbie went down to the Goose for a couple of drinks.
August 29, 1978 - Tuesday. Marie came today. We fished the Mississippi 3 x. She had 8 packages of fish when she went home. We fished Turner once and got 1 package of fish.
September 2, 1978 - I gave Marie a permanent and she gave me one and we washed and fixed Mom's hair.
September 5, 1978 - Marie left this AM as she was expecting company and I guess the house was a mess. I washed and ironed today.
September 7, 1978 - Today is club. I'll pick up Bessie and help her serve. Margaret Nierman will go along with me. I went to church supper past Pine Center for chicken. V.G. George and Susan, Elsie and Howard, and Ethel Sawl.
September 8, 1978 - We went to check on shutters today. We got 22 crappies on Borden, Har and I.
September 9, 1978 - Went to Wisconsin. Left at 7:05AM. Got by Marie, had pie and coffee. Left at 11:45 for Horicon. Arrived by Katie's at 4:30. Left there after supper, went by Jim's and then out by Bill's. We played cards and went to bed.
Tuesday. I washed clothes by Sharon. They dried and it was so hot. I slept by Jim's.
Wednesday. Put contact on the counter by Jim. It sure looked nice and he said it really does. I defrosted the refrigerator and freezer. Went up by school, picked up Collette. She said she was sick. Sharon came up and helped me. Bill used Bob's truck and brought up another dresser for Jim. I bought new handles for the dresser. I made supper. Bill and Sharon and the kids ate with me. Jim had a sandwich, went deer hunting (bow and arrow). I slept by Bill's.
Thursday. I sorted out Jim's clothes and put them in the 2nd dresser. I scrubbed the bedroom floor and the bathroom floor. After lunch I took the drapes and rugs out by Sharon and washed. I went out by Katie for supper. Pat and Len were there and then came home.
Friday. I cleaned the front room and kitchen. Friday nite, Jim took us, Bill and Sharon and kids out by Reggie for fish fry and then we came home. I really slept by Jim's. Left Jim's at 7AM. Arrived by Marie at 12:15, ate chicken and left. Arrived in Garrison at 5 to 5 PM and went to 5 o'clock mass. Got home at 6 PM. Cec was just making supper.
Sunday. We took her out by Ray's. Her court day was canceled, so she left for California. They're moving back here, I guess, from California.
October 5, 1978 - Thursday. Today was club.
October 8, 1978 - Sunday. We went to Ray's at Isle and ate dinner and then went and visited Joe and Dorothy Lindholm.
October 9, 1978 - Monday. Gave Mom a permanent.
October 13, 1978 - Friday. Left for Wisconsin and picked up 8 bushels of apples and Marie and I butchered 14 ducks. I brought 10 back with me.
October 19, 1978 - Thursday. I washed all the windows and we went out on Seguchie launch. We got 4 walleyes.
October 20, 1978 - Friday. Today is Golden Age at Aitkin.
October 21, 1978 - Saturday. I washed clothes this AM. Then we used Red's truck and we went out and got a load of manure. We took Gloria out 2 ducks and some apples.
October 22, 1978 - Sunday. We unloaded the rest of the manure and then I went to 10:30 mass and made dinner and raked acrossed the road.
October 23, 1978 - Monday. I canned a bushel of apples in sauce. 13 1/2 quarts in all. Tonite we go to the Blue Goose as guests of Iver Carlson. I cut Mom's hair, too. It was Iver's birthday. 73 years old.
October 24, 1978 - Tuesday. I made 8 apple pies and wheeled 7 loads of stones in the wheel barrel down to the lake.
October 25, 1978 - Wednesday. Went to Deerwood Senior Citizens and played cards by Craggs at nite. I've been making angels wreath and soap holder for bathroom by Susan's.
November 3, 1978 - Went to the bank at Deerwood and went to Crosby and Brainerd to do our grocery and some Christmas shopping. We ordered things for Chick and Judy from Penny's. Got Tam a watch and Christmas tree charm. I bought Jim a kitchen clock. We met George and Susan, Al and Ann Knutson, Mom and Harland and I went to the Moose feed at Log Cabin. It was real good. There's another one the 17th of November benefit of the Salvation Army.
November 4, 1978 - I washed clothes today and ironed. Red and Dena took us to a chili feed at the Community Center. It was real good.
November 8, 1978 - Susan, Orville, Grace, Evelyn, Harland and I were assigned the dining room preparations at Deerwood for our Senior Citizens thanksgiving dinner. We had turkey and the works. It was delicious.
November 10, 1978 - I went with a bus load of women to the Cities Christmas shopping. It was fun. We had our Thanksgiving dinner at Aitkin in November.
November 13, 1978 - Cec came today and is going to court tomorrow.
November 25, 1978 - We had Thanksgiving and George came over. Louise was all broke out with a rash and itched, so she didn't come. Cec had dinner by Ray and Gloria S. She came and stayed over a week with us.
December, 1978 - I was real busy in December getting ready for Christmas. We had club over to Mabel A. and she and I were hostesses and we exchanged gifts.
December 9, 1978 - Saturday. Harland's fish house went out today. Harland and Red caught 32 walleyes.
December 13, 1978 - Wednesday. We had Senior Citizens at Deerwood.
December 14, 1978 - Thursday. I went to a luncheon at Alliance Church.
December 15, 1978 - Friday. We went to Aitkin for Senior Citizens.
December 16, 1978 - Saturday. We had a delicious pot luck dinner at the resort amongst the neighbors. It was real nice.
December 17, 1978 - Sunday. We had a cookie exchange at the resort. Each one brought 3 1/2 dozen cookies.
December 18, 1978 - Monday. We left for Marie's to pick up our beef and Mother stayed there. We ate dinner, picked up our beef and paid $62.21 for processing and $350.00 to Hank for the beef. The weather was threatening, so Harland and I came home. We got home at 8PM. Red came over and helped us carry it in the house.
December 19, 1978 - Tuesday. 16 years ago, Chick had his accident. I canned 7 quarts of beef and cooked up some soup bones and getting ready to go to Wisconsin for Christmas.
December 22, 1978 - Friday. We left at 7:15AM and arrived in Beaver Dam at 2:45AM. We stopped at McDonald's and ate. Then went to Horicon. We took some walleyes for the kids.
December 23, 1978 - Saturday. We visited Minnie and we had supper by Alfred's.
December 24, 1978 - Sunday. John was 16 years old. Katie and Willie went to Texas for Christmas, so Pat M., Sharon and I made dinner for John. Bob got 2 buckets of chicken. We had sloppy joe's, salad and dinner rolls and Pat brought along some cake. We took the kids home as Marty had to march in a procession at midnight mass. It was real nice.
December 25, 1978 - Monday. Harland and I went to 9 o'clock church at Zion Church as Tammy had to read. I guessed we surprised Judy and Tam. Then we went by Chick's while they opened their gifts. Then we went back by Bill and Sharon's and had breakfast and they opened their gifts. We had 16 for dinner and a very nice day.
December 26, 1978 - Tuesday. We went by Chick's for supper.
December 27, 1978 - Wednesday. We stopped by Alice and Lawrence in the AM and had a very nice visit. They gave us 2 ice cream pails full of hickory nuts and then we went out by Maxine and Warren for stead dinner. What a dinner. We played some cards and went back by Bill's and ate left over chicken and dressing and got stuff ready for the trip home.
December 28, 1978 - Thursday. We left Bill's at 7:15. Arrived by Marie's around noon, ate dinner and packed Mom up and came home as a storm was brewing. We left Marie at 12:45. We stopped at Pike's Point, ate supper. When we came out, it was snowing and blowing real hard. We were lucky we came home a day early.
December 30, 1978 - Friday. We went to Brainerd to pick up our mail, but the post office was closed. I exchanged Mom's dress to a size 24 1/2. Harland got a new sport coat from Penny's from our gift certificate from Jim for Christmas. I went to 5 o'clock mass. Harland went fishing. He got 2 walleyes.
December 31, 1978 - Saturday. We went by Spences. Had a real nice New Year's Eve party. Grace, Orville, Evelyn Oleson, Dena, Red, Ruth and Francis and Harland and I. We went to bed at 3 AM.
January 3, 1978 - Tuesday. We went to the bank and after dinner I called Dr. Bissinger for Mom as she has been having back trouble. Doctor told me she should move around more like sitting on a chair and getting up oftener and take Tylenol for pain and watch her weight.
January 7, 1978 - Saturday. Had Dena and Red over for fish fry - walleye and crappies. They really enjoyed it. It really turned cold. -22 to -25 in the AM.
January 9, 1978 - Monday. I tied the blue and white quilt and started the crazy quilt. Tammy had her concert which was postponed because of weather conditions. Wish I was there.
January 13, 1978 - Friday. Hubert Humphrey passed away from cancer. He sure looked rough at Christmas time.
January 15, 1978 - Sunday. I went to church last nite and I made 4 apple pies and 2 apple crisps. That takes care of the apples. We only have 2 inches of snow and cold. I bought 4 new guppies on Thursday.
January 18, 1978 - I gave Mom a permanent.
January 20, 1978 - I cut Mom's hair this AM and then Harland and I went with George and Susan to Aitkin Golden Age. I made Collette a quilt top from 4 inch squares print and put it together with a deep pink. It's really pretty. I made 3 lap robes for Cedarbrook.
February 2, 1978 - Thursday. We had our Ladies' Aid meeting at Mabel Anderson's home and made Valentines for Cedarbrook.
February 3, 1978 - Friday. We went to the bank and on into Brainerd. Had our income tax made out. We have to pay $50.00 to State. We made out the long form at H&R Block. They charged $20.00 for services.
February 5, 1978 - Sunday. George and Louise came over and we played cards. I made cherry pie, chicken, baked potatoes and salad for supper.
February 6, 1978 - Monday. Harland went to the doctor at 8:15AM and then we went around by George and Louise and told them what the doctor had said. Then he dropped me off at Cedarbrook for our monthly work day. Harland picked me up at 1:00PM from Cedarbrook and he went to the hospital to get ready for surgery in the AM.
February 7, 1978 - Tuesday. I left home at 9AM. They took Harland up at 10:35 and brought him down at 12:20. He has an IV and bottles of sodium chloride to flush out his bladder. 8 bottles all tolled. The numbness is still there. He can't wiggle his toes. It's been over 3 hours. Dr. Smith says it will go out all at once.
February 10, 1978 - Friday. Dr. Smith took the tubes out today and everything is coming good.
February 11, 1978 - Saturday. Went to Brainerd shopping and then into Crosby to see Harland. Doc says maybe he can come home tomorrow. I went to church at 5PM and Evelyn Olson came over. She went home after 10PM.
February 12, 1978 - Sunday. Harland came home this AM. He's doing real good.
February 13, 1978 - Monday. I mailed our nursery order out. 2 cherry trees, 3 blueberries, sweet onions, pepper seed, flowering almond bush, tuberous begonia bulbs, 1 yellow rose bush. I started cleaning cupboards today.
February 14, 1978 - Tuesday. I baked 2 loaves of bread and washed the kitchen walls and woodwork.
February 15, 1978 - Wednesday. I started washing walls on the porch and Betty and Ken came over to see Harland. I made dinner and washed dishes and then Evelyn Olson came over and when she left, I washed some more, made supper, that's it. I talked to Bill and Sharon, told them Dad came home Sunday and to let the rest of the kids know.
February 16, 1978 - Thursday. I finished washing walls and windows and carpeting. Made 3 apple pies, one for us, Dena, and a small one for Evelyn.
February 17, 1978 - Friday. I'm washing Mom's blankets and the rest of the washing, including curtains. I sent for drapes and a matching spread for Bill and Sharon.
February 18, 1978 - Saturday. I'm washing walls on the porch and floor and carpeting. Went to church tonite.
February 19, 1978 - Sunday. I done my ironing and put the curtains and drapes up. Cec called today.
February 20, 1978 - Monday. I shampooed the kitchen carpeting today.
February 21, 1978 - Tuesday. I baked 3 loaves of bread and frosted chocolate cookies. I gave Betty a loaf and some cookies and cleaned the rest of the house.
February 22, 1978 - Wednesday. I washed my hair, made the poppy seed torte for our card party tonite. George Forester won 1st for the men. Susan Forester won for the women. Ann Knudsen won booby prize. We had a nice time.
February 23, 1978 - Thursday. I went to the hospital to see Louise. She has bronchitis with her asthma, but she is coming along good. I took Mom to the doctor on the 17th for her rash. The medicine the doctor gave her is too strong. It makes her dizzy. Mom fell, but just bruises. I also took her to the foot doctor. I house cleaned the kitchen and porch this past week.
February 26, 1978 - Sunday. Goldie Brown passed away today.
February 27, 1978 - Went to Senior Citizen and joined at Deerwood. They're planning a trip to Minneapolis for the Ice Follies on March 31st.
March 2, 1978 - We had our Aid meeting today.
March 6, 1978 - Monday. Susa, Doris and I did volunteer work at Cedarbrook, then we went over and visited Ann Maghan after her breast surgery. She's doing real good.
March 8, 1978 - Wednesday. Marty is 6 years old today.
March 9, 1978 - Thursday. Chick is 36 years old today.
March 10, 1978 - Friday. Ken, Betty, Joe, Harland and I went to Clearwater crappy fishing. We got 24.
March 11, 1978 - Saturday. We picked George up and went fishing at Clearwater again and we got 30.
March 12, 1978 - Sunday. Harland smoked 19 crappy today. I done some baking.
March 13, 1978 - Monday. I finished my ironing and done some sewing. We got 6 inches of snow. The most we got all winter.
March 14, 1978 - Tuesday. Harland went to see Dr. Smith. He's doing real good.
March 16, 1978 - Thursday. I washed clothes and ironed and cleaned house.
March 17, 1978 - Friday. St. Patrick's Day. George, Susan and us went to Golden Age at Aitkin and then we visited Mrs. Seymour at the nursing home.
March 18, 1978 - Saturday. Harland and I went shopping and we stopped by Super Valu to see Grace to see if Mike would put a roof and siding on the house. She thought he would. I went over by Susan and she trimmed my hair up in the back and I cut hers. It turned out real good. We're both satisfied. I went to church tonite.
March 19, 1978 - Sunday. I baked 3 pumpkin pies. One for Evelyn Olson, Betty and us and made a bowl of jello.
March 22, 1978 - Wednesday. I washed the cars and sewed on aprons. Betty will sell them for me this summer. Went to Aitkin. Got 200 yards of lace.
March 24, 1978 - Good Friday. I went to church at 3PM. I made 3 lap robes for Cedarbrook. 8 all tolled.
March 25, 1978 - Saturday. We trimmed along the bank and burned it off. I went to church at 5:00PM.
March 26, 1978 - Easter Sunday. I baked an angel food cake. Father Brennan brought communion to Mom at 11:30AM. After he left, we went to Brainerd to Log Cabin and had Easter dinner and then we came home.
March 27, 1978 - Monday. I washed and ironed today and took Mom's electric blanket off.
March 28, 1978 - Tuesday. We all went to Deerwood Senior Citizen today. We took Evelyn Olson along and she joined. We had a good time.
March 29, 1978 - Wednesday. I ironed a couple doilies and cut out more aprons. We had card club by George and Susan. Elsie and Howard won 1st.
March 30, 1978 - Thursday. I planted 7 tuberous begonias today.
March 31, 1978 - Friday. We went to Minneapolis to the Follies. It was beautiful and such a nice day.
April 2, 1978 - Sunday. We had an ice storm, so we didn't take Mom out to eat.
April 3, 1978 - Monday. We done our volunteer work at Cedarbrook today, sewing, and one-to-one.
April 4, 1978 - Tuesday. We're going out to eat tonite. Max called. Louise's sister passed away yesterday at 9PM of a heart attack. Louise left this afternoon for Chicago. I planted 3 tuberous begonia bulbs.
April 12, 1978 - Wednesday. Harland's birthday. 69 years old. We left for Wisconsin at 20 minutes to 11. Arrived by Marie at 2:20PM.
April 13, 1978 - Thursday. Left Marie at 8:15AM. Mom stayed with Marie. We went to Kraft to see Katie. She was working nites, but talked to Willie. We went to Horicon. I stayed up by Jim's. Dad went over and talked to Chick and then we went out by Bill's. They were grocery shopping. We watched TV. They were surprised.
April 14, 1978 - Friday. Harland went to the Pyramid and I went up by Jim's and done his laundry and cleaned his apartment.
April 15, 1978 - Saturday. Tam and I went to Beaver Dam, done some shopping for her. She got a swim suit, short and top. We went out by Maxine Bilke. Then we ate at McDonald's and came home.
April 16, 1978 - Sunday. We went to church at 8 o'clock mass. Baked Collette's birthday cake, played "500", then Grandpa H. and Irish came and we went to Bonzo's to eat and then we came home.
April 17, 1978 - Monday. We went to Minnie and Alfred's for dinner. Came back, had supper at Bill's and played cards.
April 18, 1978 - Tuesday. Sharon, kids, Dad and I went to Horicon to dime store, bank and grocery store. Came home, ate lunch, took a nap, went by Sally and Metzie, but they weren't home. We went by Jim's, took him out by Katie for supper. Had a real nice time. We played sheepshead, the 6 of us, Pat, Len, Jim, I, Della, and Willie. Len backed off in the ditch, Willie pulled him out. We went home, dropped Jim off as his car was being fixed.
April 19, 1978 - Wednesday.We left Bill's at 7:35AM.
April 20, 1978 - Thursday. We picked Mom up and left Marie's at 9AM. She sent sweet rolls, doughnuts, apples, an African violet along with 8 dozen eggs. We gassed up at Barron. Got home at 1:20PM.
April 21, 1978 - Friday. We started raking the lawn and then it rained.
April 23, 1978 - Sunday. We took a cake over to Emma Plotte. Her husband passed away.
April 24, 1978 - Monday. We went to the funeral and Susan, Kay, I and Elsie served the mourners at the Echo school house. The ice went out of Borden Lake today.
April 25, 1978 - Tuesday. Went to Deerwood to Senior Citizens. Harland had a doctor appointment so Mom and I rode with Leons. I raked more this evening.
April 26, 1978 - Wednesday. I put out 2 washings.
April 27, 1978 - Thursday. I finished raking and we burned the bank. It really looks nice.
April 29, 1978 - Saturday. I baked 5 loaves of bread, 1 pan bars, 2 blueberry pies, 2 apple pies, 1 apple crisp for Dena. I went to 5 o'clock mass.
May 1, 1978 - Sunday. Made dinner, fixed Jim's pants and made 1 more lap robe. That's 11 in all. I painted the tire flower pots white.
May 4, 1978 - Thursday. We went to club. Mom and I went to church. Ascension Day.
May 5, 1978 - Friday. I started painting the inside john white and green. Painted the back screen door.
May 7, 1978 - Sunday. I made 5 apple pies, 1 rhubarb, 4 for Dena, baked 3 loaves of bread and fixed Swiss steak. We took Mom out to eat at the Chicken Shack for Mother's Day. Then we went to Isle to see Joe Lindholm. Had a real enjoyable afternoon.
May 9, 1978 - Tuesday. Katie called. They can't come as Willie has to work. His superior is in the hospital.
May 14, 1978 - Sunday. We had a quiet Mother's Day. Bill and Sharon called. Hank called saying Marie was in the hospital Cec called. Had a beautiful card from Chick and Judy with $5.00 and a beautiful card from Jim.
May 16, 1978 - Tuesday. We planted 2 cherry trees, 3 blueberries, 1 grape, 1 yellow rose bush. I and Susan went to R.S.V.P dinner in Brainerd. It was very good. Del started the roof today. I set out 19 tomato plants and broccoli.
May 17, 1978 - Wednesday. I washed all the rugs and shampooed kitchen carpeting.
May 18, 1978 - Thursday. Jim called and he can't get off work to come up with Chick and Reggie. Harland planted our glads and I set out the snap dragons and 29 more tomato plants. Marie called. She just got out of the hospital. Del has 4 new windows in.
May 19, 1978 - Friday. I washed the new windows and cleaned up the mess.
May 20, 1978 - Saturday. Chick and Marvin Rogenbauer arrived at 1:30AM. They got 18 walleyes and 4 perch.
May 21, 1978 - Sunday. Chick and Marvin got 44 perch in the AM and 18 walleyes and 5 perch at night. The kids went over by George to get some leeches and minnows. Dad and I went over by Kevin's graduation. I planted out house plants in the 2 gold planters and side of the garage.
May 22, 1978 - Monday. I washed clothes and started to mow lawn and trim.
May 24, 1978 - Wednesday. Del finished the windows and I started to varnish and paint.
May 25, 1978 - Thursday. Went to Brainerd and paid taxes and had the land behind us recorded that we got from Unruh's. Chick and Marvin had 300 perch and 76 walleyes.
May 26, 1978 - Friday. Chick and Marvin left at 20 to 9 loaded with goodies. I washed clothes and painted more windows and put the drapes up in Mom's room.
May 27, 1978 - Saturday. I cleaned up the house and had George and Susan over for fish fry and I went to 5 o'clock mass.
May 29, 1978 - Monday. I finished painting the windows inside on May 31st. I washed clothes in the house and ironed in between showers. It rained all week. Marie came today.
June 1, 1978 - Thursday. We went to club.
June 2, 1978 - Friday. I got my permanent yesterday and dyed my hair today.
June 3, 1978 - Saturday. George and Louise took Mom, Marie, Hon and I to Harold's Club. Bill and Sharon came today. Harland, I and Mom went to George and Susan's 50th wedding anniversary at Deerwood.
June 6, 1978 - Tuesday. Marie took us to the Chicken Shack. It was really good.
June 7, 1978 - Wednesday. I had a real nice birthday. Mom gave me a pair of sheets, Marie $10.00, Bill and Sharon $10.00, Jim called tonite. Him, Wayne and Todd are coming after work Friday nite.
June 9, 1978 - Friday. Del finished the house.
June 10, 1978 - Saturday. Jim, Wayne and Todd got here at 2AM. Wayne got lost. Bill and Sharon and Collette left at 10AM and they got home at 5:30. Marie and I went to 7:30PM mass.
June 11, 1978 - Sunday. Marie left at 8:45AM. Arrived home at 12:30. We finished planting our begonias, mums and apple tree that George and Louise gave us and our flowering crab. Jim, Wayne and Todd aren't having much luck fishing.
June 12, 1978 - Monday. Dad, Jim and Wayne went to Big Mine this AM.
June 14, 1978 - Wednesday. We went to the bank and got a Marty a hair cut and a swimming pool. After supper we went down and paid Del for the material and his wages.
June 15, 1978 - Thursday. It's still raining. I finished our bathroom curtains and 1 for the porch.
June 16, 1978 - Friday. Went to Brainerd shopping and for supper we went to Seguchie's for walleye. It was V.G.
June 17, 1978 - Saturday. I cleaned the house and changed the bedding. Went to church.
June 22, 1978 - Thursday. I started to paint the house. I got the west side done and it rained again.
June 23, 1978 - Friday. Sharon called. Katie and Willie got married June 19th. We had Unruh's and Jeff Walker over for fish fry that Harland got Thursday at Big Mine.
June 24, 1978 - Saturday. Harland and I and Red picked strawberries. We got 5 boxes for $23.90 and Red 2 boxes. I put 20 boxes of strawberries in the freezer and made 4 batches of jam and we ate plenty. Marty and I went to 5 o'clock mass. Ray was over tonite for awhile. He gave Mom a $30.00 check.
June 25, 1978 - Sunday. We got 1/2 inch rain again. Jim came at 3:35. We wrapped Maria's birthday gift. She will be 2 years old on Tuesday.
July 1, 1978 - Saturday. Bill and Sharon came at 1:30AM. They drove in rain from Mayville to Onamia. Sharon and I took the kids to see Paul Bunyan. The kids went home July 6th.
July 7, 1978 - Friday. Jim left this AM. We had our club picnic at Hammels. I washed 6 sheets and 1,282 blankets, etc.
July 8, 1978 - Saturday. It sure rained again. The kids got 380 fish all tolled. They went to Turner Lake and had real good luck. Jim had a lot of nice perch he got before Bill and Sharon came. They (Dad and Jim) fished Mille Lacs.
July 9, 1978 - Sunday. Today Tam is 12 years old.
July 10, 1978 - Monday. I washed clothes again, cleaned out the inside of the car and defrosted the refrigerator in the garage. I made dinner, defrosted the big freezer in the garage and washed the car.
July 11, 1978 - Tuesday. I got my ironing all caught up.
July 14, 1978 - Friday. Bob and John came around 3:30PM. We went down to Seguchie's for fish fry. Bob treated.
July 15, 1978 - Saturday. Harland, Bob and John went over by George, but they went to Crosby. I went to 5:00 mass.
July 16, 1978 - Sunday. Bob and John went to 10:30 mass. I fixed the turtle and we had Evelyn over, too. She really enjoyed it. Gloria, Ray, and Cec were over.
July 18, 1978 - Tuesday. Bob and John left after 9:15. Bob left $100.00. I washed clothes, ironed and canned 4 quarts of peaches.
July 19, 1978 - Wednesday. I cleaned out the shower stall, painted the front of the house, made lunch, finished the front of the house, canned 8 pints of beans, 3 quarts of peached and picked raspberries. We've been going to Crow Wing River and have done real good in limit of bass.
July 20, 1978 - Thursday. We went to Grand Rapids thru the paper mill and seen the program on the boat. Had a smorgasborg for supper. It was delicious. Got home at 10 to 1AM. Had a real good day.
July 21, 1978 - Friday. Chick, Judy and Tam stopped on their way back from out West. They stayed over night and left Saturday AM in the rain.
July 27, 1978 - Thursday. We went shopping and put a new battery in the fire alarm. $6.28. I am canning 2 1/2 quarts of beans. 16 quarts so far.
July 29, 1978 - Saturday. I finished painting with the roller cleaned up the house. Cec and Gloria came over and we figured out our picnic. I went to 5 o'clock mass. Made potato salad, sloppy joe's and a cake.
July 30, 1978 - Sunday. Larry, Red, Harland and I went to Crow Wing River at 5:30AM. We got 8 bass. Made lunch, cleaned fish and packed the car. Harland took a short nap. We met Ray, Gloria and Cec over to Crow Wing Park. Had our picnic. Then Cec, Gloria and Mom went by Gloria's and we went fishing. We got 9 bass and 1 walleye. Took Ray home and picked up Mom and came home. Cleaned fish.
July 31, 1978 - Monday. I scraped all the fish and we picked beans and I canned 8 more pins and I made a batch of peach and raspberry jam. I froze 2 cartons and saved a bowl for eating. I painted around the back door and Harland painted the screen door and put in a new screen and then we went over and played Tripley at Unruh's. I won quite a few pennies.
August 1, 1978 - Tuesday. Washed clothes, had Dena, Red and Debbie over for fish fry.
August 2, 1978 - Wednesday. I made another batch of peach and raspberry jam and I canned 4 1/2 quarts of peaches for sauce. After dinner I washed my hair and we went over by Susan and she cut it for me. Then we played cards and she was bound we stay for supper. Then we came home and picked beans and raspberries. I canned 3 more quarts and I have 23 quarts so far.
August 3, 1978 - Thursday. We went to club today and the bank. We mowed lawn and cleaned out the sweet onions and I picked up rocks from the back garden and where Harland mows grass on Clem's.
August 4, 1978 - Friday. I ironed this AM. Marie called about picking pears by Ginger in Madison. We're taking Mom to the foot doctor this afternoon and shopped.
August 5, 1978 - Saturday. Today Charlotte got married. Harland and I went out to eat at Lumbertown. I made 5 loaves of zucchini bread, fixed a beef roast. It was really delicious at Lumbertown. We stopped by Del to find out about shutters.
August 6, 1978 - Sunday. I baked a banana cake, 4 loaves of banana bread and made banana cream pudding for dinner. I'm going to 10:30 mass. Pope Paul VI passed away this afternoon. This past week Tootie Fields died of cancer and Frank Fontaine died of a heart attack.
August 7, 1978 - Monday. I washed clothes this AM and then went to Cedarbrook for volunteer work.
August 8, 1978 - Tuesday. I left at 7:10AM for Marie's to go to Madison and pick pears. We arrived by Ginger about 5:30. Went to Heritage House and had smorgasborg. Went to Kmart shopping and then we went to the nursing home where Ginger worked and Marie met that one old gal she corresponds with and then we went back to Gingers and played a few cards and went to bed.
August 9, 1978 - Wednesday. Went and picked pears. There must have been 25 trees loaded. We went back by Ginger, made some ham sandwiches, ate, and left for Horicon. We stopped by Katie and Willie, Jim, Chick and Judy, but they weren't home, so we went out by Bill's. Went and picked corn. Bill went to a meeting and when he came home we played cards.
August 10, 1978 - Thursday. Left after we dropped Sharon off at work and the kids up by the babysitters. We picked up our bushel of apples and started for Marie's. I left Marie's at 5 to 3:00 and got home at 7PM.
August 11, 1978 - Friday. I took care of the corn, what the 'coons didn't wreck. I've been canning pears every day.
August 15, 1978 - Tuesday. We went to church at 7:30PM. I canned more pears. I have 20 quarts so far. 6 for Chick.
August 17, 1978 - Thursday. Harland and I went to the fair and then ate at Perkins, done our shopping and came home.
August 18, 1978 - Friday. I finished the pears. 26 1/2 quarts all tolled. Then we went to Aitkin Golden Age. Margaret Niermann (Dena's mother) went along.
August 21, 1978 - Monday. Grace Lieon, Evelyn Oleson, Margaret Nierman, and myself fixed flowers for centerpieces.
August 22, 1978 - Tuesday. We served dinner at Deerwood today. There were ? people in attendance.
August 23, 1978 - Wednesday. Marie called. She is coming the 28th or the 29th.
August 24, 1978 - Thursday. George and Louise were over. We played cards. George and Louise were over for supper.
August 25, 1978 - Friday. Jim is 25 years old today. I shampooed kitchen carpeting today.
August 26, 1978 - Saturday. I went to 5 PM mass. We have a new pope. Pope John Paul I. Harland and I, Dena and Debbie went down to the Goose for a couple of drinks.
August 29, 1978 - Tuesday. Marie came today. We fished the Mississippi 3 x. She had 8 packages of fish when she went home. We fished Turner once and got 1 package of fish.
September 2, 1978 - I gave Marie a permanent and she gave me one and we washed and fixed Mom's hair.
September 5, 1978 - Marie left this AM as she was expecting company and I guess the house was a mess. I washed and ironed today.
September 7, 1978 - Today is club. I'll pick up Bessie and help her serve. Margaret Nierman will go along with me. I went to church supper past Pine Center for chicken. V.G. George and Susan, Elsie and Howard, and Ethel Sawl.
September 8, 1978 - We went to check on shutters today. We got 22 crappies on Borden, Har and I.
September 9, 1978 - Went to Wisconsin. Left at 7:05AM. Got by Marie, had pie and coffee. Left at 11:45 for Horicon. Arrived by Katie's at 4:30. Left there after supper, went by Jim's and then out by Bill's. We played cards and went to bed.
Tuesday. I washed clothes by Sharon. They dried and it was so hot. I slept by Jim's.
Wednesday. Put contact on the counter by Jim. It sure looked nice and he said it really does. I defrosted the refrigerator and freezer. Went up by school, picked up Collette. She said she was sick. Sharon came up and helped me. Bill used Bob's truck and brought up another dresser for Jim. I bought new handles for the dresser. I made supper. Bill and Sharon and the kids ate with me. Jim had a sandwich, went deer hunting (bow and arrow). I slept by Bill's.
Thursday. I sorted out Jim's clothes and put them in the 2nd dresser. I scrubbed the bedroom floor and the bathroom floor. After lunch I took the drapes and rugs out by Sharon and washed. I went out by Katie for supper. Pat and Len were there and then came home.
Friday. I cleaned the front room and kitchen. Friday nite, Jim took us, Bill and Sharon and kids out by Reggie for fish fry and then we came home. I really slept by Jim's. Left Jim's at 7AM. Arrived by Marie at 12:15, ate chicken and left. Arrived in Garrison at 5 to 5 PM and went to 5 o'clock mass. Got home at 6 PM. Cec was just making supper.
Sunday. We took her out by Ray's. Her court day was canceled, so she left for California. They're moving back here, I guess, from California.
October 5, 1978 - Thursday. Today was club.
October 8, 1978 - Sunday. We went to Ray's at Isle and ate dinner and then went and visited Joe and Dorothy Lindholm.
October 9, 1978 - Monday. Gave Mom a permanent.
October 13, 1978 - Friday. Left for Wisconsin and picked up 8 bushels of apples and Marie and I butchered 14 ducks. I brought 10 back with me.
October 19, 1978 - Thursday. I washed all the windows and we went out on Seguchie launch. We got 4 walleyes.
October 20, 1978 - Friday. Today is Golden Age at Aitkin.
October 21, 1978 - Saturday. I washed clothes this AM. Then we used Red's truck and we went out and got a load of manure. We took Gloria out 2 ducks and some apples.
October 22, 1978 - Sunday. We unloaded the rest of the manure and then I went to 10:30 mass and made dinner and raked acrossed the road.
October 23, 1978 - Monday. I canned a bushel of apples in sauce. 13 1/2 quarts in all. Tonite we go to the Blue Goose as guests of Iver Carlson. I cut Mom's hair, too. It was Iver's birthday. 73 years old.
October 24, 1978 - Tuesday. I made 8 apple pies and wheeled 7 loads of stones in the wheel barrel down to the lake.
October 25, 1978 - Wednesday. Went to Deerwood Senior Citizens and played cards by Craggs at nite. I've been making angels wreath and soap holder for bathroom by Susan's.
November 3, 1978 - Went to the bank at Deerwood and went to Crosby and Brainerd to do our grocery and some Christmas shopping. We ordered things for Chick and Judy from Penny's. Got Tam a watch and Christmas tree charm. I bought Jim a kitchen clock. We met George and Susan, Al and Ann Knutson, Mom and Harland and I went to the Moose feed at Log Cabin. It was real good. There's another one the 17th of November benefit of the Salvation Army.
November 4, 1978 - I washed clothes today and ironed. Red and Dena took us to a chili feed at the Community Center. It was real good.
November 8, 1978 - Susan, Orville, Grace, Evelyn, Harland and I were assigned the dining room preparations at Deerwood for our Senior Citizens thanksgiving dinner. We had turkey and the works. It was delicious.
November 10, 1978 - I went with a bus load of women to the Cities Christmas shopping. It was fun. We had our Thanksgiving dinner at Aitkin in November.
November 13, 1978 - Cec came today and is going to court tomorrow.
November 25, 1978 - We had Thanksgiving and George came over. Louise was all broke out with a rash and itched, so she didn't come. Cec had dinner by Ray and Gloria S. She came and stayed over a week with us.
December, 1978 - I was real busy in December getting ready for Christmas. We had club over to Mabel A. and she and I were hostesses and we exchanged gifts.
December 9, 1978 - Saturday. Harland's fish house went out today. Harland and Red caught 32 walleyes.
December 13, 1978 - Wednesday. We had Senior Citizens at Deerwood.
December 14, 1978 - Thursday. I went to a luncheon at Alliance Church.
December 15, 1978 - Friday. We went to Aitkin for Senior Citizens.
December 16, 1978 - Saturday. We had a delicious pot luck dinner at the resort amongst the neighbors. It was real nice.
December 17, 1978 - Sunday. We had a cookie exchange at the resort. Each one brought 3 1/2 dozen cookies.
December 18, 1978 - Monday. We left for Marie's to pick up our beef and Mother stayed there. We ate dinner, picked up our beef and paid $62.21 for processing and $350.00 to Hank for the beef. The weather was threatening, so Harland and I came home. We got home at 8PM. Red came over and helped us carry it in the house.
December 19, 1978 - Tuesday. 16 years ago, Chick had his accident. I canned 7 quarts of beef and cooked up some soup bones and getting ready to go to Wisconsin for Christmas.
December 22, 1978 - Friday. We left at 7:15AM and arrived in Beaver Dam at 2:45AM. We stopped at McDonald's and ate. Then went to Horicon. We took some walleyes for the kids.
December 23, 1978 - Saturday. We visited Minnie and we had supper by Alfred's.
December 24, 1978 - Sunday. John was 16 years old. Katie and Willie went to Texas for Christmas, so Pat M., Sharon and I made dinner for John. Bob got 2 buckets of chicken. We had sloppy joe's, salad and dinner rolls and Pat brought along some cake. We took the kids home as Marty had to march in a procession at midnight mass. It was real nice.
December 25, 1978 - Monday. Harland and I went to 9 o'clock church at Zion Church as Tammy had to read. I guessed we surprised Judy and Tam. Then we went by Chick's while they opened their gifts. Then we went back by Bill and Sharon's and had breakfast and they opened their gifts. We had 16 for dinner and a very nice day.
December 26, 1978 - Tuesday. We went by Chick's for supper.
December 27, 1978 - Wednesday. We stopped by Alice and Lawrence in the AM and had a very nice visit. They gave us 2 ice cream pails full of hickory nuts and then we went out by Maxine and Warren for stead dinner. What a dinner. We played some cards and went back by Bill's and ate left over chicken and dressing and got stuff ready for the trip home.
December 28, 1978 - Thursday. We left Bill's at 7:15. Arrived by Marie's around noon, ate dinner and packed Mom up and came home as a storm was brewing. We left Marie at 12:45. We stopped at Pike's Point, ate supper. When we came out, it was snowing and blowing real hard. We were lucky we came home a day early.
December 30, 1978 - Friday. We went to Brainerd to pick up our mail, but the post office was closed. I exchanged Mom's dress to a size 24 1/2. Harland got a new sport coat from Penny's from our gift certificate from Jim for Christmas. I went to 5 o'clock mass. Harland went fishing. He got 2 walleyes.
December 31, 1978 - Saturday. We went by Spences. Had a real nice New Year's Eve party. Grace, Orville, Evelyn Oleson, Dena, Red, Ruth and Francis and Harland and I. We went to bed at 3 AM.
