1983

January 1, 1983 - Saturday.  It was 23 above this AM.  We came home at quarter to one.  Had a good time.  The guys played and won 4 games and we 2.  6 handed "500".  I asked Evelyn over for dinner, roast beef, etc.  We went over and had a New Year's drink with Dena, Red, and Evelyn.  We (Evelyn and I) went to 5:00 mass at Deerwood.

January 2, 1983 - Sunday.  Mom called again last nite when we went to church.  So Harland and I went in to see her.  She was sedated and quite calm.  She didn't say anything about Indians under her bed or the 3 nurses under the bed.  Harland I went thru some papers and receipts.  We took Grace and Paul out to eat at Twin Pines.  It was delicious.  Then we played dirty clubs.  

January 3, 1983 - Monday.  We finished cleaning out the night stand in the spare bedroom.  I went into Brainerd, seen Mom, got some pills for Harland.  I played Bingo, won $10.00.  I worked in the kitchen alone, took in $20.75 for coffee and doughnuts.

January 4, 1983 - Tuesday.  We served at Senior Citizens in Garrison, Susan, Paul, Grace, Julia, and Sig Peterson.  

January 5, 1983 - Wednesday.  Our weather is really beautiful for this time of year.  High is 31 degrees.

January 6, 1983 - Thursday.  Our Aid was postponed because of the snow storm. 4 inches in all.  

January 7, 1983 - Friday.  We got 4 inches of snow and drifting last night.  It was 14 above this AM.  We used the snow blower and shovel on the driveway.  It's just beautiful, sun shining.  I shoveled 3/4 of the snow off the roof.  There was water under the snow on the kitchen roof.

January 8, 1983 - Saturday.  I finished the roof this AM.  We picked Evelyn up and we went to Pierz shopping.  I didn't get a coat, but a brown and pink blouse, a white sleeveless sweater, wine colored slacks, two long sleeve shells, 1 beige and 1 blue.  Went into Brainerd and seen Mom, and went to Kmart for paper products.

January 9, 1983 - Sunday.  Paul and Grace picked me up for church.  Our weather is still warm.

January 10, 1983 - Monday.  I washed clothes, cleaned house.  Played Bingo at nite, but I didn't win.  Harland won $5.00.

January 11, 1983 - Tuesday.  It is 12 degrees above, folded up the clothes and sprinkled them.  I washed my hair.  After supper we picked up Chet and Frieda.  Went into Brainerd at Woodland Acres for more on residents and nursing homes.  It really hit home.

January 12, 1983 - Wednesday.  I fixed dinner, done the ironing.  I done some shirts up for Bill that George and Louise gave me for him.

January 13, 1983 - Thursday.  I fixed chicken, pork chops, salad, baked an apple pie for us and apple crisp for V.F.W. Auxiliary.  Susan picked me up and we went to the Community Center, set up tables and helped with potatoes, etc.  After, I came home.  I went in to see Mom.  She cried and said they wanted to adopt her.  I said, "Nobody can adopt you because you belong to us".  She said, "Ann, you're an angel".  I said, "That isn't what Harland says" and then she laughed.  We talked more and when I left she says she felt better.  She says I was the only one that cared.  After supper we had our 2nd card club by Paul and Grace.  Paul and I won 1st and Harland and Frieda were low.  We had a very good lunch and came home.

January 14, 1983 - Friday.  I cleaned our bedroom and I'm working on the front room.  I'm washing windows, mirror and lights.

January 15, 1983 - Saturday.  It was -8 and windy this AM.  I finished cleaning the house, baked biscuits, coffee cake and a banana cake.  Paul and Grace came over and played dirty clubs.

January 16, 1983 - Sunday.  It was -3, no wind.  Went to church.  Harland went fishing down by Chets.  Paul and Harland each got a northern.  Paul gave them to Harland.  I finished our bird pillows.

January 17, 1983 - Monday.  -8 this AM.  I made a cabbage hot dish.  Started our beef out for stew.  We took Chet, Frieda, Paul and Grace and went to Brainerd to see "Tootsie"  It was really good and not too much hard cussing, but comical.  

January 18, 1983 - Tuesday.  -19 this AM.  Getting ready for card club here.  I'm making beef stew.  Howard and I had 1st.  Ann K and George booby.  Al K was sick, so a gal friend of Al's and Ann's came.  "Adeline".  Very nice.

January 19, 1983 - Wednesday.  Had a pot luck at Ray's Cafe.  Clara and Mabel put it on.  We played cards till 3.  At 3:15 we left for the doctor.  Harland's blood pressure was up 170 over 80.  The doctor increased one medication.

January 20, 1983 - Thursday.  -16 this AM.  Had a day at home to ourselves.

January 21, 1983 - Friday.  It was 16 degrees above.  We're going to Senior Citizens at Aitkin.  We went to Butlers after, got materials to cover Dena's foot stool.  Went by George and Susan and played cards.  When we came home, we watched "Boomtown" with Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert.  It was about oil drilling.  V.G.

January 22, 1983 - Saturday.  It was -2.  I'm washing clothes.  Harland is cracking hickory nuts.  Evelyn drove and we went to 5:00 mass at Deerwood.  Gas is $1.17 a gallon there.

January 23, 1983 - Sunday.  It was 15 above.  I done some mending and put a new lining in my summer jacked.  Paul and Grace came over and we played dirty clubs.  Paul won.  I finished a can of nuts that Harland cracked.

January 24, 1983 - Monday.  20 degrees above and beautiful.  No activities today.  The director is sick, but I'm going to see Mom anyway.  Grace, Evelyn, Frieda and I went to see Mom and others and then we went shopping.  Got home at 6:20PM.  I had to sell coffee and doughnuts for V.F.W. Auxiliary.  Took in $20.50.

January 25, 1983 - Tuesday.  I baked bread, biscuits, fixed chicken and chicken soup.  It was -15 this AM.  I washed out V.F.W. towels and hung them out.  I finished picking out the cracked hickory nuts.  We're a long way from done.

January 26, 1983 - Wednesday.  -25 this AM.  We went to Senior Citizens at Deerwood.

January 27, 1983 - Thursday.  -6 this AM.  Paul and Grace came about 3PM and we played dirty clubs till 4:30.  Then Susan and George came and we waited for Chet and Frieda.  Then we all went to Twin Pines for our card club dinner.  It was real good.  Then we came here and played cards and snacked.

January 28, 1983 - Friday.  We had freezing rain.  It was 24 above this AM.  Harland and Paul went down by Chet and they got 3 northern, a couple crappies and Harland got a 2 3/4 lb bass.

January 29, 1983 - Saturday.  It was 30 degrees above at 6:15AM.  We got some lite snow today.  I browned 2 packages chicken and 1 rabbit and made dressing.  Harland and Paul went fishing.  Harland got a 3 1/2 inch bass.  I'm still picking out hickory nuts.  We're on the 2nd box of nuts.

January 30, 1983 - Sunday.  It was 10 above.  Paul and Grace picked me up for 9:00 mass.  We took chicken, dressing, apple crisp.  Frieda and Chet took vegetable and salad and we went over by Mabel and Elmer Anderson, had dinner at their place at the motel in Deerwood.  We stayed till 3:30, then went to Brainerd to the nursing home.  Mom was good, but Bill Hively was real mad and upset.

January 31, 1983 - Monday.  It was -8 and the sun was shining and beautiful.  Harland and Paul went fishing on Borden at 6AM.  They got 3 northern, no bass.  I drove, Evelyn and Grace, Frieda and Susan, and we went to the nursing home.  So we'll start volunteering every Monday.  Mom was good and contented, doing her hangers.  We're playing Bingo tonite.  I won $2.00.  There were 4 Bingos.


February 1, 1983 - Tuesday.  Harland went to the eye doctor at 8:45AM.  He will get new glasses.  He had a blood test taken at the hospital.  We finished our shopping, we came home and went to Senior Citizens at Garrison.  It was -15 this AM.  We went by Paul and Grace's.  Played dirty clubs.

February 2, 1983 - Wednesday.  It's 9 above this AM and cloudy.  Harland and Paul are fishing on Borden.  Paul and Grace were over for dinner.

February 3, 1983 - Thursday.  -8 this AM.  The Cities got 15 inches of snow and winds 30-40 mph.  We didn't get any snow yesterday.  Our weather is really beautiful.  We went to Ladies Aid at Leonard Finch's today.  George and Susan stopped, we played cards, had supper and they went home.

February 4, 1983 - Friday.  -18, clear and cold.  Harland got a haircut at Crosby and we went around by George.  He said he wasn't going out and fall on the ice and break a bone.  They sure must of went some place to get brandy.  All Mom has done for him.

February 5, 1983 - Saturday.  It was -4 below.  I'm washing clothes.  Harland went fishing with Larry, Gary and Jeff to Peterson.  They got 2 northern.  Then they went to Turner and got nothing.  I'm making pickled fish.

February 6, 1983 - Sunday.  I went to 9:00 mass with Grace and Paul.  At 11:30 Harland and I went down for pancakes and sausages benefit for Lion's Club.  I finished our pickled fish tonite.

February 7, 1983 - Monday.  Grace picked me and Frieda up and we went to Woodland Acres for 6 hours.  We done sewing and after lunch we played "500" and some of them really enjoyed it and are looking forward to next Monday.  Mom is more contented, eagerly waits for Mondays.  It was -22 this AM, cold and clear, but warmed up nice.  A beautiful winter so far.

February 8, 1983 - Tuesday.  It's 8 above.  Lite snow flurries.  I made our yellow tomatoes into jam and I started spring house cleaning in the cellar way.  It looks real nice.  I packed the pickled fish in jars.

February 9, 1983 - Wednesday.  It was 15 above.  I finished my ironing.  I'm cleaning cupboards over the stove.  Harland and Paul went northern fishing on Borden.  They got 2 northern and 1 crappie.  I finished the lower half of the cupboards.  Paul and Harland went nite fishing.  They got 3 crappies.  I froze the northern for pickling.

February 10, 1983 - Thursday.  It was 20 above and lite snow flurries.  I couldn't sleep, so I finished picking out the hickory nuts.  I'm still cleaning all the nooks amd crannys and drawers.  Today is Sharon's birthday.  She is 29 years old.  We played cards by George and Susan.  Our 2nd card club.  Susan, Harland 1st.  Paul and I, booby.  I've got the upper part of the cupboard to clean.

February 11, 1983 - Friday.  It's 22 degrees above this AM.  Harland went to the doctor this AM and we stopped at the eye doctor, but his new lenses weren't here.  We finished our shopping and came home.  We had lunch, Harland took a nap and at 1:30 we left for Legion at Deerwood.  We played Bingo and at 5PM we had supper.  Mashed potatoes, gravy, meatloaf, peas and corn, dinner roll and salad.  For dessert we had chocolate chip ice cream and a cup cake.  Grace won a silver dollar.

February 12, 1983 - Saturday.  It was 24 degrees.  I run the vacuum this AM.  Harland went northern fishing.  He got 3.  I fried crappies for dinner.  I made dressing, fried chicken, made 2 pumpkin pies, 1 rhubarb, cooked green beans fixed with cream of mushroom soup.  I baked 2 loaves of frozen bread.  Harland and Paul went fishing this evening.  No fish.  So Paul and Grace came over for dirty clubs.

February 13, 1983 -  Sunday.  It was 28 above and cloudy.  We took Chet and Frieda to a brunch at Aitkin for noon.  When we came home, we played 9 bid "500".  They left around 3:30 and Dena, Red, and Debbie came over for supper at 6:30.  Dena was feeling no pain.

February 14, 1983 - Monday.  Today Bill is 34 years old.  Susan picked Grace and I up and we went to Woodland Acres nursing home.  We were there for 6 hours.  We played Bingo.  I sold doughnuts and coffee.

February 15, 1983 - Tuesday.  Harland got his new glasses.

February 16, 1983 - Wednesday.  It was 28 above this AM.  We went around by Susan and George and had our card club.  George and I won 1st.  Ann K and Howard got booby.

February 17, 1983 - Thursday.  It was 12 above.  I cleaned the upper part of the cupboard and the counter, etc.  I finished 6 more towels for Dena's shop.  Doris called and Barb took Webb to the University Hospital this AM.

February 18, 1983 - Friday.  It was 28 degrees this AM.  We took George, Susan, and Erma Bigowette to Aitkin golden Age.  After supper we went over by George and Susan and played "500".  I got some light pink yarn to finish the last 2 towels.  That makes 20 in all.

February 19, 1983 - Saturday.  It was 30 degrees and real foggy.  I cleaned house this AM.  Made a beef roast for dinner.  I finished the towels.  200 all tolled and we watched bowling on TV.

February 20, 1983 - Sunday.  It was 30 degrees above.  I started zucchini bread and went to 9:00 mass with Paul and Grace.  I finished the bread when I came home.  Chet and Frieda came shortly after 11AM.  Then we went to Crosby hospital to see Betty Johnston.  She had a heart attack, but doing fine.  We then went by Elmer and Mabel for dinner at Deerwood.  It was roast beef and V. good.  We then played cards.  A fun day.

February 21, 1983 - Monday.  15 above this AM.  I picked up Grace, Frieda and Evelyn and we went to Woodland Acres for 6 hours.  After supper, Dena and Debbie came over and we played Bingo and won nothing.

February 23, 1983 - Tuesday.  20 above this AM.  Harland and I helped serve at Deerwood Senior Citizens, at the Legion and then we played cards.  We went to Crosby and got a permanent for Mom.  I called Woodland and they had already given Mom one and cut her hair.  I went to church tonite and after I came home, I baked a cake for Maynard La Doux's funeral.  I sewed a couple hot pads and pot holders.

February 24, 1983 - Wednesday.  It is 15 above and sunny.  I made frosting for the cake for Maynard La Doux's funeral this AM.  I washed up the dishes and got ready.  We left at 9:30 for the funeral at 10AM.  We served about 85 people.  After we cleaned up, Harland and I rode over with Evelyn to Aitkin to see Iver Carlson and he sure is in rough shape.  Lost a lot of weight and we could hardly understand him.

February 24, 1983 - Thursday.  I cleaned the refrigerator freezer inside and out.  It sure needed it.

February 25, 1983 - Friday.  It was 5 above this AM.  I washed clothes and made dinner and fixed my hair.  After supper, Paul and Grace rode along with us and played "500" over at Crosby, benefit kidney foundation.  Chet won 1st.  Harland 3rd.

February 26, 1983 - Saturday.  I put my wash away and sprinkled the ironing and run the sweeper.  Made dinner and cleaned up the kitchen and watched bowling.  Earl Anthony won by 1 pin.  It was 14 above.  I rode along with Paul and Grace.  We went to mass at Deerwood.  I made supper for Paul and Grace and us.  Then we played dirty clubs.  Harland and I won.

February 27, 1983 - Sunday.  It's 33 degrees above and cloudy.  We're putting new covers on Dena's and Red's foot stool.  It turned out real good.

February 28, 1983 - Monday.  It was 32 degrees above and cloudy.  Grace picked me, Frieda and Susan up and spent 6 hours at Woodland Acres.  Mom still doesn't seem contented.  I, Dena and Debbie played Bingo.  Dena won the jack pot of $17.00.  It sprinkled when we went down to the V.F.W.

March 1, 1983 - Tuesday.  It was 22 degrees and we got about 1/2 inch of snow.  I made jello for Senior Citizens at Garrison.  We played 8 card Bingo.  Harland won 4 x and I 3 times.

March 2, 1983 - Wednesday.  It was 25 degrees and foggy.  We went to Brainerd shopping, got a new motor for our raccoon clock.  A leaky battery wrecked the other one.  Went to see Mom, took her bananas and cookies.  We got our car license tabs and trailer and tabs, we got some wallpaper for the east wall on the porch.  Donna will pick Dena, I and Susan up for V.F.W.

March 3, 1983 - Thursday.  Today we went to Senior Citizen at Carl and Edna John's.  After our pot luck and meeting, we put a quilt together and tied it.  Susan took it home to sew zig-zag on the machine on the sides, etc.  It was 28 degrees this AM and clear.  It was 55 above.

March 5, 1983 - Saturday.  It was 32 above, cloudy and rain predicted.  We were going to paper the east wall on the porch, but the paper had flaws, so we went to the Senior Citizens at Crosby instead.  It was a very interesting program about Sweden.  I'm working on the little aprons.

March 6, 1983 - Sunday.  I went to 9:00 mass at Garrison.  Chet and Frieda stopped and after supper Paul and Grace came over and we played dirty clubs.

March 7, 1983 - Monday.  I picked Susan up and we spent 6 hours at Woodland Acres.  Mom said, "Take me with you".  I only wish I could.  We (Dena, Debbie and I) played Bingo and I sold doughnuts and coffee.

March 8, 1983 - Tuesday.  Today is Marty's birthday.  He's 11 years old.  I snowed about 1 inch and it got colder.  The high was 18 for us and I fixed celery and onions and toast 3 loaves of bread.

March 9, 1983 - Wednesday.  Today it was 8 degrees above and windy and clear.  Chick is 41 years old today.  I put contact on the last wall on the porch, done some spring house cleaning.  I toasted 2 more loaves of bread.  Debbie has 4 loaves to toast.  I made water and chicken base to moisten the bread.  We played cards by Paul and Grace.  Harland and Grace had 1st.  Chet and I had booby.  It's 10 degrees above tonite.

March 10, 1983 - Thursday.  Temp is 5 degrees above.  Dena and I went down and stuffed turkeys at the Community Center.  I brought 2 home to roast.  Dena had 1 large one.  Our dinner at nite was a huge success.

March 11, 1983 - Friday.  Temp was 5 degrees above again.  We went to Cutler (Pine Lake Senior Citizens) today.  When we came home, I sewed bias tape on 3 hot dish carriers on the machine.  After supper I sewed the tape on by hand.  Evelyn and Bertha stopped this PM.  Evelyn has to go back to the Cities to finish her dental work.  Bertha enjoyed her California vacation, but all the rain and storms and tremors were scary she said.  The news is over and it's time to go to bed.

March 12, 1983 - Saturday.  The temp is 22 degrees this AM and sun is shining.  I washed clothes and hung everything outside.  They dried beautifully.  I baked a rhubarb cake, run the sweeper in the kitchen, bath and porch.  After dinner I washed dishes and then cleaned the car, inside and out.  Took all the clothes off the line.  Iver Carlson passed away this AM.  Evelyn and Bertha picked me up for 5:00 mass at Deerwood.

March 13, 1983 - Sunday.  The temp is 28 degrees and sun is shining, but rain and snow showers are predicted.  I folded our clothes, done the ironing.  I washed and set my hair.  Paul and Grace picked us up and we went to the Chicken Shack.  It was their treat.  We came home and played dirty clubs.

March 14, 1983 - Monday.  The temp is 24 and cloudy.  Grace picked Frieda and I up to go to Woodland Acres.  We spent 6 hours there.  Paul and Grace went with us to view Iver Carlson.  He sure looked good since the last time we seen him.  We then played cards at the Senior Center at Crosby.  We didn't win, but they sure had a nice lunch.

March 15, 1983 - Tuesday.  I made salad for our pot luck at Knutson's for our 1st card club.  George and I won 1st and Al K and Ann K got booby.  It snowed tonight, not even an inch.  The Cities got 3.7 inches of snow.

March 16, 1983 - Wednesday.  I went to Brainerd at "Body Wrap".  It was 13 1/2 inches all over.  The temp was 24 degrees.  Paul and Grace stopped after church.

March 19, 1983 - Saturday.  I left for Marie's at 8:30.  It was really cold and windy.

March 20, 1983 - Sunday.  We gave each other a permanent.

March 21, 1983 - Monday.  I came home today.

March 22, 1983 - Tuesday.  Evelyn and I went to see Mom and we had a sing-a-long.  Then we took Mom for a ride and all she did was bitch about everything.  Then I told her what I thought and she cooled off.  Harland or I didn't want her.  We couldn't handle her and a wheelchair.  I washed clothes in the AM, made dinner and run the vacuum before we went to see Mom.

March 23, 1983 - Wednesday.  I want to finish cleaning the front room and our bedroom.  It was 5 degrees above.  We went to Senior Citizens at Deerwood.

March 24, 1983 - Thursday.  It was 8 degrees above.  I cleaned our bedroom and dusted.  Paul called to use our potty chair and 10 minutes later he called and said that Webb passed.  Paul and Grace came over and we played dirty clubs.  I won $2.40.

March 25, 1983 - Friday.  Temp is 18 degrees.  Paul and Grace, Harland and I are taking the bus to Minneapolis to see Ice Odessey.  That was the best ice show we ever seen.  It was beautiful and comical  We got home at 8PM, had supper in Milaca.  V.G.

March 26, 1983 - Saturday.  I straightened up the house and sewed the 4 hot dish carriers on the machine.  Bertha got her a used gold Cadillac.  It's beautiful.  So we went to Deerwood to church at 5PM.  At 8:30 we went to V.F.W. drawing for 1/2 beef.  Louise Walker won the beef.  They won $150.00 on pull tabs.  Debbie won $50.00. We had a sloppy joe and came home.  It was snowing.

March 27, 1983 - Sunday.  The temp is 24 degrees and lite snow.  The Cities really got hit again.

March 28, 1983 - Monday.  Susan drove and we spent 6 hours at Woodland nursing home.  Mom was really feisty.  She gave up on her hangers and wouldn't come in the activity room.  Then she was pulling her dresses off the hangers.  I was supposed to put them in our car, but I told her I didn't drive.  An aid came and wanted me to see if she would come with me.  So I got her in the activity room.  I called the doctor and he said he advised giving her Haldol, but it really made her feisty.  He then advised a brain scan.  I asked him if it would hurt and he said no, but she screamed when they took her out of the car, so they put her back in.  She was relaxed when we got her and when we took her back, she was sedated at the hospital.  I don't think she realized Harland and I were there.  So we came home when the nurses got her in her own wheelchair.  Cec called from Kentucky and asked if we would be in Brainerd to pick her up Friday AM at 10:38.

March 31, 1983 - Thursday.  We went to Crosby.  Harland wanted a haircut, but the shop was closed till April 4.  We stopped by Elsie and Howard, played cards, had supper and played 9 bid of "500".  It was foggy when we left at 10PM.

April 1, 1983 - Good Friday.   It's 32 degrees, cloudy and foggy.  We picked George up and went in Brainerd to pick Cec up from the bus at 10:38 AM.  We then went to see Mom.  She was mixed up.  I guess we just have to resign ourselves to the fact she is 93 and aging.

April 2, 1983 - Saturday.  I made cinnamon rolls and cut Cec's hair and put in a permanent for her.  Cec and I went to church at 5PM and we played sheepshead.  Harland won.

April 3, 1983 - Sunday.  Mom is 93 years old today.  We took her an Easter lily.  Marie gave her a pretty nightgown.  George and Louise gave her a box of chocolate cherries and $10.00.  Cec left $5.00 for her here, so I can take fruit, etc.  Her mind runs good for awhile and then she's off.

April 4, 1983 - Monday.  It's sunny and temp is 29 degrees.  Cec, Frieda and I are going to Woodland Acres.  Mom was really uptight.  She was getting the hell out of nursing homes and no way could I handle her at home.  I told Mom I didn't know when I would see her.

April 5, 1983 - Tuesday.  Today is Henry Sybers birthday.  Harland, Cec and I went to Garrison Senior Citizens.  I planted our tuberous begonias.

April 6, 1983 - Wednesday.  I went to Deerwood and helped serve at a funeral.  We served 125 people and the kitchen help.  It snowed all day, a wet snow, but we got a good inch.

April 7, 1983 - Thursday.  Grace helped me serve for Ladies Aid at the Echo Town Hall.  We had a good turn out, but no conveniences.  We played cards by Susan tonite.

April 8, 1983 - Friday.  Harland had a doctor appointment at 9AM and then we served at Pine Lake Senior Citizens.  They showed a movie on aging.  Very interesting and helpful.  It was just beautiful today.

April 9, 1983 - Saturday.  I put a wild goose and a tame duck in the oven.  I had dressing in the freezer, so I used that.  I run the sweeper and cleaned house.  Ray came at noon and picked Cec up.  They had apple crisp and ice cream before they left at 4:30PM.  Bertha picked me up for 5 o'clock mass.  I called Marie and it is snowing there tonite and all day tomorrow she says.

April 10, 1983 - Sunday.  We got an inch of snow again last night.  I sewed a zipper in Harland's insulated jacket and we covered another foot stool this afternoon.  We had a sloppy joe and angel food cake and strawberries for supper.  Our snow is all gone.  I wish it would dry up so I could start raking.

April 11, 1983 - Monday.  I washed clothes this AM and I went to Woodland Acres for 6 hours.  I went alone.  I took the clothes off and put them away.  I really had a big wash.  I sprinkled the ironing.  I was really beat.

April 12, 1983 - Tuesday.  Today Harland is 74 years old.  We played cards at Howard and Elsie's today and have pot luck.  Rain is predicted for today.  Our snow is completely gone.  Harland and Else won 1st and Al and Ann Knutson got booby.  It started to snow when we left Howard and Elsie's and it's really coming down.  We had cake and ice cream before we left.  Paul and Grace came over with frosted cupcakes and we played dirty clubs.  It was fun and it's still snowing.  I planted red tomatoes today.

April 13, 1983 - Wednesday.  It's 28 degrees and still snowing (wet).  Today is Cedarbrooks 1st day auction.  Dena and I went, but we didn't buy anything today.  I done the ironing today after dinner.

April 14, 1983 - Thursday.  We got snow most of the day, but not as much as the Cities got (13 inches).  We got 2 inches.  I planted our swan planter and the hanging planter and the other one that sets on the porch.  The Cities just broke 150 year record snow fall.  13.6 inches for April.  I'm finishing the 4 hot dish carriers.  I got 2 done.

April 15, 1983 - Friday.  It is 15 degrees this AM and sunny.  I'm working on the other 2 holders.  Susan and George picked me up for Senior Citizens in Aitkin.  We didn't have to serve today, but in October Harland was sick, so he didn't go.  Cold, sore throat, etc.  I went with Paul and Everett Pearson to a meeting at the town hall.

April 16, 1983 - Saturday.  It's beautiful today.  The temp is 22 degrees.

April 18, 1983 - Monday.  It was nice, but cold.  Mom is really failing.  She is tied in her chair now, as she fell once.  Grace drove and we spent 7 hours there today.  Paul and Grace came over and we drove to Crosby and played cards.  Harland won 3rd and we had lunch.  V.G.

April 19, 1983 - Tuesday.  It was 25 degrees and sunny today.  I planted 2 hills of cukes and 3 hubbard squash in the house.  I planted cauliflower also yesterday.  Paul, Grace, Harland and I are going to the Chicken Shack tonite.  It'll be our treat.  It was delicious.  We played dirty clubs after.  Harland won $2.75.

April 20, 1983 - Wednesday.  I'm working on a set of bird pillows for Bertha's birthday in May and Christmas.  We had our volunteer's tea at Woodland this afternoon.  Harland went to the doctor at 3:45.  The doctor wants him to have a head scan and kidney xray.  His blood pressure is 164 over 90.  I'll call the hospital in the AM.

April 21, 1983 - Thursday.  Today is Marie's birthday.  She is 71 years old.  It is 40 degrees this AM and beautiful  I started raking acrossed the road and trimming along the bank.  We took George and Susan to Aitkin to Woodland Opera from Grand Rapids.  V.G.

April 22, 1983 - Friday.  Harland had a head scan at the hospital today.  I made squash, blueberry torte and furnished brats for a cook out by Dena and Red.  I came home, dyed and washed my hair.

April 23, 1983 - Saturday.  It was 32 degrees above, beautiful.  I raked accrossed the road this AM and sawed more brush.  George and Susan will pick us up for Mille Lacs Electric meeting.  No one won anything in our group.  Evelyn and I went to 5:00 mass.  I drove.  Then we picked Harland up and we went to Marlene's for a smelt fry, a treat from Evelyn.

April 24, 1983 - Sunday.  I finished raking acrossed the road and Harland, I and Larry planted a maple tree by the outdoor grill after lunch.  I raked on the west side of the house.  After 4PM, we took Red, Dena, Debbie and Evelyn to the Chicken Shack and when we came home, we burnt the bank and rubbish pile.  The weather and the wind were right.

April 25, 1983 - Monday.  Susan picked Grace and I up and we went to Woodland Acres for 6 1/2 hours.  Mom was heavily sedated.  She didn't know we were there.  The ice went out of Borden today.

April 26, 1983 - Tuesday.  24 degrees and cloudy.  Rain is predicted.  Harland has to be in Brainerd for kidney xrays at 8AM.  I went to see Mom and we had a nice straight forward talk that I could not take care of her at home.  We had our 1st spring rain.  I raked more in the front and east side and we planted another maple tree on the east side of the house.  I put the shavings from the tree trunk on the garden and we put dirt in the hole.

April 27, 1983 - Wednesday.  It was 34 degrees and beautiful  I washed clothes and then Dena and I went to Harley Swanson's funeral.  Harland went with Paul and Grace to Deerwood Senior Citizens.

April 28, 1983 - Thursday.  I done the ironing this AM.  It is cloudy and misty.  Evelyn and I went to Crosby to Elmer Ahland's funeral.  He was buried at Emily, Minnesota.  Margaret, Evelyn and I went to a restaurant and had coffee and a good visit.  We played cards by Paul and Grace.  Howard and I won 1st.  George and Elsie low.  Howard and Elsie took Chet and Frieda's place as chet is in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he had surgery for aneurism (heart valve).

April 29, 1983 - Friday.  It was 32 degrees and sunny.  I cleaned house today, washed my hair and at 3:30 we took the quilt and stopped by Evelyn and Bertha and then we took the quilt by Clayton and Lena Adam who lost most everything in a fire in their house trailer.  The Ladies Aid furnished the quilt.  Bertha took Evelyn, Harland, I and Lena to the Y for a smelt fry.  We took one home for Clayton.  Then Evelyn took Bertha, Harland and I for a ride around Mille Lacs.

April 30, 1983 - Saturday.  It was 26 degrees.  I went and raked at the cemetery for 2 hours.  Made lunch and afterwards, I planted our sweet peas and large yellow marigolds.  Evelyn picked me up and we went to 5:00 mass at Deerwood.  After supper I done more raking in the back.

May 1, 1983 - Sunday.  It was beautiful this AM.  I cleaned and sorted the boxes on the closet in the spare bedroom.  We repaired 2 of our lawn chairs.  I boiled our soup bones and cleaned them off and washed dishes.  Marie called from Henry's.  Harland and I went to see the log house.  It was 3 bedrooms, 10 acres, $69,500.  It was beautiful, but too big.  We stopped by the Green Lantern and came home.  We heard Roxanne Meyer got married again, her third.

May 2, 1983 - Monday.  It's 34 degrees and sunny.  No rain yet.  Grace went along with me to Woodland Acres for 6 hours.  Paul and Grace came over and we played dirty clubs.  Harland Paul won.  Paul took the bouquet of glads home that Martha gave us from the nursing home.  I'm crocheting the back for Bertha's bird pillow for her birthday.

May 3, 1983 - Tuesday.  Sunny and nice.  I finished raking, brought the old beef in from the garage.  Evelyn picked Grace, Susan and I up for R.S.V.P. dinner at the Legion in Brainerd.  We had Swiss steak, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, cole slaw, buns and cake.  V.G.  We gave Grace and Paul soup bones, round steak and a beef roast.  We went down by Frank's and picked up our quarter of beef.  136 lbs for $1.39 a lb.

May 4, 1983 - Wednesday.  It was cool this AM and clear.  I cooked soup bones and made vegetable soup.  I cooked up pig feet and hocks and made pickled pig's feet.  Washed up the dishes and Grace picked me up and her and I got our hair cut at Crosby.  I made apple crisp for our Auxiliary pot luck tonight and installation of officers.  Harland and George Forester went along also.  Then we played "500".  Susan and I lost 5 games.

May 5, 1983 - Thursday.  I set my hair, put a hot dish in the oven and we went to Ladies Aid at Echo Town Hall.  I dug around our peonies and Harland fixed the stand to set our swan on.  The stump rotted off.  I transplanted cabbage and cauliflower this AM.

May 6, 1983 - Friday.  We went to Brainerd shopping.  We got 25 patio blocks for the walk.

May 7, 1983 - Saturday.  I washed curtains and part of the wash.  Paul cleaned off the rest of the lake bank that hung over the lake and the guys (Larry and Gary) put the docks in and put our boat on the trailer.  We had a picnic by Dena's.  Paul, Grace, Larry and family, Dena's mother.  V. nice time.  Paul and Grace, Harland I played dirty clubs.  Paul and Harland won.

May 8, 1983 - Sunday.  It was 34 degrees and sunny.  We sure need rain and it's been a cool spring.  Margaret (Dena's mom) and I went to 9:00 mass in Garrison.  At 11:30, Paul and Grace picked us up and we went to the Chicken Shack for dinner (Mother's Day).  Then Harland and I went to the nursing home and took Mom a plant.  Afterwards George and Louise brought her an azalea.  Mom was pretty good.

May 9, 1983 - Monday.  It is 38 degrees and south wind, sunny, dry.  Grace picked me up and we went to Woodland Acres for 5 1/2 hours.  The orioles have arrived.

May 10, 1983 - Tuesday.  We had 1st card club here today.  I made Swiss steak, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans.  Elsie brought salad, Ann K dinner rolls.  Susan was sick, so I made a cake for dessert and ice cream.  Ed and Evelyn Mills took George and Susan's place.  It was a fun day.  I fixed Dena's drapes.  Made them longer.  We still haven't had any rain and real windy.

May 11, 1983 - Wednesday.  It is 52 degrees.  We had a few sprinkles of rain.  I got the rinse and vac in Garrison and shampooed the kitchen carpet.  I made dinner and after dinner I went by Mom for Mother and Daughter tea.  It was a real nice program and tea.  I won a begonia, done the shopping and came home.  I got a yard of material for Bertha's pillows for her birthday and Christmas.  I picked up Harland's sport coat from the cleaners.  We went down by Evelyn and Bertha, got the extra sand for under our patio blocks.

May 12, 1983 - Thursday.  We straightened out the kitchen, made dinner and after dinner, I went to the community Center and helped set the tables for 75 people.  Paul and Grace and I went to 5 o'clock mass.  Then Paul, Grace, Harland, I and Oscar and Hazel Miller followed us over to Elsie and Howard Craggs to celebrate their 56th wedding anniversary.  I took angel food cake and strawberries and Paul and Grace took ice cream.  Hazel and Paul won 1st and Harland and I booby.  It was a nice evening.  Jim called tonite.  They're coming May 20th after work for a week's vacation.  We got our 1st good rain this spring.

May 13, 1983 - Friday. It's sunny and beautiful.  Everything looks so nice and green.  I shortened 2 pair of slacks.  Made rhubarb cobbler for Pine Lake Senior Citizens.  We played Bingo after the meeting.  I'm working on the back of the last bird pillow for Bertha. Susan is 75.  Elsie 76.  Frieda 78 years old.

May 14, 1983 - Saturday.  It was 32 degrees and windy and fishing opened up today.  I washed dress pants, blouses and sweaters this AM and 3 table cloths.  I went to 5:00 mass.

May 15, 1983 - Sunday.  It was 32 degrees and cloudy.  I cleaned up the parsnips from Paul.  Sprinkled the table cloths.  I baked an apple pie, chocolate chip cake, a loaf of bread, fixed chicken for dinner.  It snowed this AM.

May 16, 1983 - Monday.  I picked Grace and Susan up for volunteer work at Woodland Acres.  We were there 6 1/2 hours.  I sold coffee and doughnuts, took in $23.50 for Auxiliary.

May 17, 1983 - Tuesday.  I washed clothes and house cleaned our bedding.  I mowed along the bank in the front.  I netted a northern for Evelyn.  She caught 3 this afternoon off Red's dock.  Harland painted the stand and the tree stump that holds the clothes line and the swan.  I started putting contact on the porch.  Grace, Liane, sister-in-law, granddaughter and friend stopped for awhile.

May 18, 1983 - Wednesday.  It was 40 degrees this AM.  I set the plants out in the back till danger of frost is over.  I put more contact on and have to get another 4 yards.  Harland and I planted 4 1/2 rows of red potatoes on the hill.  Harland helped Paul plant potatoes by Clem's.  I done the ironing this AM.

May 19, 1983 - Thursday.  I made rhubarb cobbler and we went to Maryhill Manor Senior Citizens.  We drove and took George, Susan and Erma along.  I made chocolate chip cookies.  When we got home, I stirred up butterhorns.  It misted all day, not much moisture, though.

May 20, 1983 - Friday.  Harland had a doctor appointment.  I went to Jake's and by Mom for a few minutes.  I went back and picked Harland up and then I went and paid taxes and we took the car in, had a motor put in for our windshield wiper.  Filled the car up with gas, stopped by Super One and came home.  I baked the butterhorns, a date cake and peanut butter cookies.  Put part of it in the freezer.

May 21, 1983 - Saturday.  The kids, Jim, Chick, Dennis K., and Mark Krueger got up here at ten after 1AM.  I went to bed at 2:45AM and the guys stayed up and visited till 6-7AM. It is nice, but windy.  The boys went out on Mille Lacs.  Got 24 perch, but came home because of the wind.  I went to 5:00 mass.

May 24, 1983 - Tuesday.  The boys are fishing on Mille Lacs.  I washed clothes today.  We had a birthday party for Bertha (Evelyn's sister).  I fixed turtle and chicken.  We had Paul and Grace over. 10 all tolled.  She said it was her best birthday ever.  Down to earth.

May 26, 1983 - Thursday.  The guys are out on Mille Lacs Lake.  Dad and Chick came home and we went to Brainerd shopping.  Chick got 30 lbs of bacon for $26.60 at $0.89 a lb.  Beautiful bacon.  Chick took Jim, Dad and I to the Chicken Shack for supper.  Dennis and Mark didn't go.  They watched the basketball game on TV.  When we came home, I packed all the fish up for the freezer.

May 27, 1983 - Friday. It was windy and rain, so there was no fishing today.  They needed 94 more perch for 1000 fish and only 2 walleyes, but didn't go because of the wind and rain.  I baked 2 batches of zucchini bread and a pan of lemon zucchini bars.  I'm sending 3 home with Chick and 1 for Jim.  We played cards on and off today.  Marie came at 4:45 and John and Debbie came around 6 o'clock.  Chick was fixing steaks on the grill.  Now they all went to Hazel's.

May 28, 1983 - Saturday.  Chick, Jim, Mark and Dennis left at 8:10AM for home.  They caught a lot of perch.  94 less than 1,000 and only 2 walleyes.  Katie and Willie came around 12:30PM.  We went to 5 o'clock mass.

May 29, 1983 - Sunday.  We all went to Itasca State Park.  The head of the Mississippi River.  Had supper on the way home.  It was cold and rainy, windy, so no fishing.

May 30, 1983 - Monday.  I went to the Decoration Day parade as the Auxiliary had to march.  They fished off Red's dock between showers.  Bob would have been 52 years old today.

May 31, 1983 - Tuesday.  I and Susan went to Woodland Acres.  Marie came later.  I came home with Marie.  I put in 7 hours.  Willie and Katie took us to the Chicken Shack for supper.  The weather was nice, but got windy.  Willie, Harland and Marie went to Turner.  Only 1 bass.

June 1, 1983 - Wednesday.  John, Debbie, Katie and Marie went to Mille Lacs.  Harland and Willie went to Peterson.  Got 6 black bass.  John, Debbie, Marie and Katie got about 200 perch.  Marie went up to see Mom.  John, Willie, Katie and Debbie went back to Mille Lacs.


June 2, 1983 - Thursday.  Katie, John, Debbie and Marie went to Mille Lacs.  Harland and Willie went back to Peterson.  They got 7 black bass.  I went to Ladies Aid alone.  Katie, Marie and I set out plants this AM.

June 3, 1983 - Friday.  Katie and Willie left around 7:30.  John and Debbie left at 8:25 and it was raining.  We changed the beds and Marie made her bed up on the porch.  We went to Onamia and Little Flower.  Marie went up to see Mom.

June 4, 1983 - Saturday.  Marie put a permanent in for me.  We went to Peterson.  Got 9 bass.  We went to 7:30 mass at Deerwood.  Margaret, Marie and I.

June 5, 1983 - Sunday.  We went back to Peterson.  Got 7 more bass.  We cleaned fish and went to the Y for a smorgasborg.

June 6, 1983 - Monday.  Grace picked me and Susan up and we went to Woodland Acres for 6 hours.  We then went shopping, Marie and I.  We went to Peterson for evening fishing, but not a thing.

June 7, 1983 - Tuesday.  I'm 69 years old today and feel good and peppy.  We went to Garrison Senior Citizens.  Then Marie and I went to see Mom.  I got a beautiful yellow rose.  Margaret, Paul, Grace, Marie, Harland and I went to Twin Pines for my birthday.  Dena, Red, Deb, and Margaret gave me a beautiful silk nightgown.

June 8, 1983 - Wednesday.  Harland and Paul went to Turner.  Got 20 sunnies and blues.  Then got rained out.  Marie left here at 8AM.  She called at 12:30.  she sure is nervous and weighs 110 lbs.  I made up Marie's bed for Bill and Sharon when they come June 26th and cleaned house.

June 9, 1983 - Thursday.  I washed clothes and finished cleaning house and got stuff ready for the card party tonite.  Susan and Howard won 1st.  Harland and I got booby.  We had lunch, then the rest went home.  Paul, Grace, Harland and I played dirty clubs.

June 10, 1983 - Friday.  We took Margaret and Erma Bigowette to Senior Citizens at Pine Lake Golden Age.  We mowed lawn in the back and watered the flower planters.  It looks like rain, which we need.  We had a strong wind and the pine tree by our driveway blew over the electric wire and our power went out at 20 minutes to 7PM.  We got power back on at 9:50PM.  They cut the tree up.

June 12, 1983 - Sunday.  We went fishing with Bob and Bev Bushman and we got 12 crappies and 1 northern.  I cleaned them up this AM.  I sent for 2 blouses from Blair.  I'm sending 2 sympathy cards to Lois Buchaus and Jerry Lehman.  I'm making blueberry torte for our cook out tonight.

June 13, 1983 - Monday.  I took lilacs and snowball flowers over by Mom and Hester and Lillian and we spent 6 hours over by Mom, but she slept most of the AM.  We played cards after dinner.

June 14, 1983 - Tuesday.  Flag Day.  We got 1 1/2 inches of rain.  I hoed the potatoes last night and Harland planted green beans for Evelyn and Bertha.

June 16, 1983 - Thursday.  We mowed lawn in the afternoon and I got rhubarb for canning.  We had our card club by Susan and George.  Harland and Elsie won 1st.  Al and Ann got low.

June 17, 1983 - Friday.  I canned 7 quarts of rhubarb, made 3 quarts with banana and 4 quarts plain.  I ground up ham for salad sandwiches for Aitkin Senior Citizens.  Harland and I cleaned the garden and hoed between us and Dena's.

June 18, 1983 - Saturday.  I washed clothes this AM, run the sweeper and worked in the basement in the afternoon.  I started cleaning canned stuff off, etc.  We have water in the basement with all the rain.

June 19, 1983 - Sunday.  Father's Day.  Harland, I and Margaret went to 9:00 mass in Garrison and we read the Sunday paper.  About 11:15 we went to Brainerd, had Kentucky Fried Chicken.  It was very good.  We went out to Acorn Nursery and I got a pink begonia and 9 late cabbage plants and we came home.  Harland napped.  After supper Paul and Grace came and we played dirty clubs.  Paul won 3 and I, 2.  Harland 2 and Grace, one.

June 20, 1983 - Monday.  I took Grace and Frieda to Woodland Acres for 6 1/2 hours.  Mom was pretty good and joking, but after dinner she was a little mixed up.

June 21, 1983 - Tuesday.  I made Swiss steak, 2 rhubarb, beef roast for dinner.  Harland peeled the last of our onions.  I packed 2 pks of chicken that I got from Jakes at 47 lbs.  They were great.  We played cards by George and Susan tonite.  2nd club.  I wrote to Marie.  Hoping Hank will take heed and ease her work load.  She weighs 110 lbs.

June 23, 1983 - Friday.  Harland had a doctor appointment at 9:15AM.  His blood pressure is coming down, but his blood is 85 (?).  We finished our shopping, came home, made lunch and got ready for Oscar Oberg's funeral at 1:30 at Deerwood Salem Church.  When we got home, I stirred up butterhorns.

June 24, 1983 - Saturday.  I washed clothes, cleaned the house, done the ironing and baked butterhorns and put the hamburgers with mushroom soup in the oven.  Jim, Chris Henderson, Bill, Sharon and the kids got here at 2PM.  We really had a wind storm.  Our power was out for 2 hours.  It was hot and humid today.

June 25, 1983 - Sunday.  The kids took 2 boats and went on Mille Lacs fishing.  I went to 9:30 mass at Deerwood.  We had a strong wind and rain in sheets for about 10 minutes.

June 26, 1983 - Monday.  Grace picked me and Susan up and we went to Woodland Acres for 6 1/2 hours.  We took 2 boats and went to Mille Lacs.  We got around 300 perch and Dad got 2 1/2 lb walleye.  It's been windy quite a bit lately.  The kids went to Turner.  Got a few blues and northerns.

June 27, 1983 - Tuesday.  I cleaned up the fish, washed dishes and run the sweeper.  We all went to the Chicken Shack.  Red is putting telephone lines underground now.

June 28 - July 4, 1983 - The guys have been fishing every day, but no amount of walleyes 2 be exact.  On Sunday, we went to church and then to Bonanza for dinner.  We done some shopping and then went by Mom.  She cried and wanted to come home, only for a week.  It was rough.  It rained July 4th.  Bill fixed chicken on the grill. They're waiting for the check from Mabel.  Jim and Chris went home on July 1st.  Grace and I went to Woodland Acres for 6 1/2 hours on Monday.

July 5, 1983 - Wednesday.  Bill, Sharon and kids went home today.  I had Bertha, Evelyn and Dora over for fish fry before Dora goes home to California.

July 6, 1983 - Thursday.  I washed 5 sheets and part of the rest of the laundry.

July 9, 1983 - Saturday.  Tam is 17 years old today.  I finished the rest of the laundry and I ironed everything except a couple of starched pieces.  Margaret and I went to 5:00 mass.  We picked chicken up from Schmitty's and we all ate together.  We brought Evelyn home from church to eat.  Mary Ann brought Margaret up for the weekend.

July 10, 1983 - Sunday.  I finished the ironing.  Picked the strawberries and put them in the freezer and then I mowed lawn in the front and on the east and west side.  We had lunch.  It was too hot to eat much.  I fixed Joni Wenholz' slacks (new elastic).  It's hot and windy, in the 90's.

July 11, 1983 - Monday.  Evelyn picked me up and we went to the home for 5 hours.  Mom cried again today and wanted to come again.

July 12, 1983 - Tuesday.  I washed the bedding in the spare room and went to the doctor at 2:30 for congestion and breathing troubles.

July 13, 1983 - Wednesday.  I house cleaned the 2 single beds and made them up.  After dinner, Evelyn, Margaret Abear, Dorothy Boucher came over and brought my vanilla from Mexico.  It was really hot.  We had watermelon and orange juice.  We really had a nice visit.

July 14, 1983 - Thursday.  It was really hot trying to sleep last night.  It is 76 degrees at 6:30AM.  I picked strawberries and rhubarb and made a batch of jam.  It's 95 degrees at 6PM in the Cities.  Harland and Paul went to Turner.  Harland got 6 bass and 14 blues.  I washed my hair and set it.  Paul got 1 bass and 32 blues.

July 15, 1983 - Friday.  We went to St. Paul and had a boat ride up the Mississippi river.  We went to the museum and later to the Omni Theater and then home.  We ate supper at the Sportsman in Milaca.  It was V.G.

July 16, 1983 - Saturday.  I picked Evelyn up and we went to Aitkin. I got material for hot dish carriers.  It's still hot and muggy.  I went to 5:00 mass.

July 17, 1983 - Sunday.  I done my ironing, run the sweeper and when Harland and Larry came home from Turner, we cleaned fish.  Harland and I picked Evelyn and Lena up and we went to Bulldog Lake Church for chicken and ham dinner.  I was V. good.

July 18, 1983 - Monday.  Grace picked Frieda and I up for Woodland Acres.  Mom was pretty good.  We were there for 6 hours.

July 19, 1983 - Tuesday.  We defrosted the freezer in the garage and I defrosted the refrigerator freezer in the garage.  I started painting the front porch and we then had rain and wind.

July 20, 1983 - Wednesday.  I went into the doctor for my bronchitis.  Then we went and picked up the strawberries.  30 lbs for $26.24 for us and one for Marie.  I got them all in the freezers.

July 21, 1983 - Thursday.  I washed clothes and Harland mowed lawn till the tractor quit.  I raked the lawn in the back as the grass was heavy.  We cleaned the plug out on the refrigerator freezer.  The water was running on the floor.  Evelyn, Bertha, Dena and Grace are having a party for us for our 50th wedding anniversary.

July 22, 1983 - Friday.  Harland had a doctor appointment at 9AM.  We were home at 10:30.  I cleaned the bath, kitchen and porch before dinner.  It's really hot out.

July 23, 1983 - Saturday.  It cooled off some.  I finished cleaning house and cleaned out our tuberous begonias.  Chet and Frieda came over and we played "500" nine bid.  Frieda and I won all 4 games.  It was a fun eve.

July 24, 1983 - Sunday.  I went to 9:00 mass in Garrison.  We didn't do anything.  Harland had a backache, so we just cooled it.

July 25, 1983 - Monday.  I picked Grace up and we went to Woodland Acres.  Mom was good, but she was renting a house and wanted to borrow money from Harland and I.  I asked how much and she said $5.00 for a rummage sale.  I came home early and I started to paint on the porch frame under the roof.  I made supper and then I painted the fence by Red's garden and the post in the front.  I made a batch of rhubarb and raspberry jam and washed up the dishes.

July 26, 1983 - Tuesday.  I painted the upper part of the easy side of the house.  I have 3 boards left.  I washed the windows and cleaned the shutters.

July 27, 1983 - Wednesday.  We served at Deerwood today, but Harland has a backache, so I'm going alone.  I finished painting on the east side of the house and then picked the beans and mowed the lawn in the back.  We picked raspberries, gave some to Evelyn and Grace.

July 28, 1983 - Thursday.  Not much going on.  It is so hot and humid.

July 29, 1983 - Friday.  This is the hottest day yet.  No breeze.  We picked raspberries and green beans this eve.  I cleaned the beans and put them in the refrigerator.

July 30, 1983 - Saturday.  I canned 8 quarts of green beans, put clean sheets and pillow cases on.

July 31, 1983 - Sunday.  I went to 9:00 mass at Garrison and at 10:30, Evelyn came over and we went to St. Matthias Church for dinner.

August 1, 1983 - Monday.  Joan Turck is 56 years old today.  Harland went to the eye doctor.  He can have surgery whenever he makes up his mind.  I went to the nursing home for 2 1/2 hours.

August 2, 1983 - Tuesday.  I washed clothes.  We went to Garrison Senior Citizens picnic at Port Mille Lacs.

August 3, 1983 - Wednesday.  I done my ironing and cleaned the bathroom, kitchen and porch.  We went to Auxiliary meeting.  Susan picked me up.

August 4, 1983 - Thursday.  Ladies Aid was over by George and Susan's.  After the meeting, Lydia had a little skit about our anniversary.  Dorothy Boucher made a decorated cake and the Aid gave us a plate with 50 years anniversary.  It was really thoughtful and nice.

August 5, 1983 - Friday.  Today is our 50th wedding anniversary.  The neighbors are really buzzing.  Evelyn, Bertha, Dena and Grace are having a celebration for our 50th.  We got a floral centerpiece of 50 yellow and red roses from Bill, Sharon and family - Jim, John Machkovech, Pat and Len, Katie and Willie.  It's just beautiful.  Harland and I, Evelyn and Bertha, Paul and Grace went to Twin Pines for supper.  It was V.G.

August 6, 1983 - Saturday.  I finished mowing the lawn.  Red, Dena and I went to flea market by Jeanne Johnson.  I bought a winter jacket for Collette.  I canned 3 quarts of beans.  The temp on the kitchen window is 105 degrees in the sun.

August 7, 1983 - Sunday.  Harland and I went to 9:00 mass.  Evelyn, Bertha, Dena, Grace and Paul Musil, and Red had a beautiful open house from 2-5PM.  There were 52 friends that helps us celebrate our "50th wedding anniversary".  It was fantastic.  How can one repay the above mentioned?  They're beautiful people.

August 8, 1983 - Monday.  Grace picked Susan and I up and we went to the nursing home for 5 hours.  We put a quilt together and tied it.  It sure has been hot, but some relief is in sight.

August 10, 1983 - Wednesday.  I canned 4 quarts of green beans and 1 quart of Italian plums.  I helped Evelyn pick her beans.

August 11, 1983 - Thursday.  I changed our sheets, straightened up things.  Tam is coming on the bus today.  We picked her up at 9:15PM.  Got her a humburger and came home.

August 12, 1983 - Friday.  We took Paul and Grace, Tam, Harland and I.  We went to Mrs. Hogason's home for our Cutler Senior Citizen's picnic.

August 13, 1983 - Saturday.  Grace, Tam and I went to find a garage sale of Joni Wenholz by Maddens Resort, but didn't find it, so we went to Crazy Days at Nisswa.  We got home at 4PM.

August 14, 1983 - Sunday.  Tam and I went to church at Deerwood.  Then Paul and Grace picked us up and we went to Wahkon to the church dinner - ham and beef.  We won Avon, Tam, I and Paul.  We had a cook out with Dena, Red and Bushmans in the big cabin.


August 15, 1983 - Monday.  Grace picked Frieda, I and Tam up and we went to Woodland Acres for 6 hours.  Mom slept all day.  I lost my driver's license and I got a permit.  I picked Evelyn's beans, our cukes and tomatoes.  Tam caught a northern off Red's dock.

August 16, 1983 - Tuesday.  I started to paint on the north side of the house at 8AM.  Then Tam came and painted the lower half.  We quit at 11AM.  I canned 3 pints for Evelyn, made dinner and put a bag of cukes in the freezer.  We washed dishes and I washed my hair and at 1:30, Tam and I went to the nursing home for our sing-a-long.  Tam played the piano.  We sure got a nice rain.  Tam and I played Canasta, Kings in Corner, Aggravation.  We worked on painting when the weather was fit.

August 17, 1983 - Wednesday.  Harland, Paul, and Tam went to Turner.  I started painting on the west side.

August 18, 1983 - Thursday.  Paul, Grace, Harland, Tam and I went to the Chicken Shack.

August 19, 1983 - Friday.  Tam and I went down to the Community Center.  I helped with the bake sale and I marched in the parade at 12:00.  Then we got something to eat and watched the tug of war and came home.

August 20, 1983 - Sunday.  Tam and I went to church at Deerwood.

August 21, 1983 - Monday.  We went to Woodland Acres.  Tam ironed priests vestments.  Grace and I cut out quilt blocks and we went shopping at noon.  I picked Mom's cotton stockings up.  Harland, Tam and I went to Twin Pines for supper and then we went and played Bingo, but we didn't win anything.  Tam and I played cards till midnight.  We went to bed, but I couldn't sleep.

August 22, 1983 - Tuesday.  We took Tam to the bus in Brainerd at 7:30AM.  I changed Tam's bed when we came home and I finished painting in the corner on the last side.  Made lunch and I painted the 2 posts by the driveway, the oriole feeder stand, the mailbox post, mail box, and the gas tank till I run out of aluminum paint.

August 25, 1983 - Wednesday.  Jim is 30 years old today.  Tuffy got mixed up with a skunk Saturday nite.  We started to dig potatoes last nite and they aren't very good.  No rain when we needed it.  I dug more potatoes.  Harland pulled the weed.  We aren't planting up there any more.  It's impossible to get rid of that one kind of weed.  Harland picked the tomatoes and I canned 6 quarts for chili and cookies up the pear tomatoes for jam.  It sure is hot today.  Since August 25th, I've canned tomatoes, jam and pickles.  I've finished digging potatoes.

September 5, 1983 - Tuesday.  Marie and Ginger came today.  1st time Ginger's been up here.  Marie brought 2 bushels of apples.

September 6, 1983 - Wednesday.  Ginger, Marie and I went to Woodland Acres.  At nite we went to the Chicken Shack.

September 7, 1983 - Thursday.  Marie and Ginger went by Mom and for supper, Paul, Grace, Marie, Ginger, Evelyn, Harland and I went to Twin Pines for supper.

September 8, 1983 - Friday.  Ginger left for Wisconsin Rapids to meet some girl friends to camp for the weekend.

September 9, 1983 - Saturday.  It was raining, so Marie and I went to Brainerd to say goodbye to Mom.  It cleared up so we washed clothes after dinner.

September 10, 1983 - Sunday.  Marie and I went to church and we picked Harland up and we had dinner at the Viking.  Marie left for home.  I planted out some of my flowers.

September 11, 1983 - Monday.  I packed the suit cases and done things around the house and after supper, Paul and Grace came over and we played dirty clubs.  At 10:30PM we left for Staples.  We had breakfast at Tony's Chicken restaurant and we went to the depot and Paul and Grace left.

September 12, 1983 - Tuesday.  We boarded the train at 1:30AM and the train left at 1:46AM.  We had breakfast on the train at Rugby, North Dakota and then we took our pills.  We spent 20 minutes in Minot, North Dakota.  Next stop was Stanley.  Stopped about 3 minutes.  We set our watches back 1 hour at Williston, North Dakota.  Williston, North Dakota is the oil capital of North Dakota.  We stopped at the following places:

We left the train for 1/2 hour break, got an ice cream bar.  There are 9 cars on the Amtrack.  Arrived at Shelby, Montana at 5:10PM.  Next stop was 
And then came Glacier Park at 6:40PM.  It's a beautiful drive, but scary.  The elevation was 5,231 feet.  Two kids picked us up at the depot to get to the lodge.  We got ready for bed.  The handle from 1 luggage was broke off.

September 13, 1983 - Tuesday.  We woke up at 7:45AM.  I took a bath, Harland a shower, we dressed and went down for breakfast.  We got Georgia's telephone number and called, but the operator gave the wrong number, but we finally got in touch.  Stan, Kathy, Georgia and Val came around 4:30PM.  We ate dinner at the lodge, real reasonable and no tax in Montana.  It is 130 miles from Whitefish, Montana to Missoula.  We had a nice visit.  We stopped at the Mission Church, but too dark to see much inside, but pictures are beautiful.  We had supper on the way home.

September 14, 1983 - Wednesday.  George got her hair set and Kathy and I went shopping.  I got Dena's microwave cookbooks.  They had a cook out with 11 in attendance.  Steak, etc.

September 15, 1983 - Thursday.  We're going to West Yellowstone today.  We got to West around 4PM.  Went to the motel.  Stan went fishing.  Harland went along, but no fish.  Georgia, Val, Kathy and I had supper and then back to the motel.  When Harland and Stan came home, they went for supper.  We talked to Jackie.  Then we sacked out for the night.

September 16, 1983 - Friday.  Today is Judy's and Evelyn's birthdays.  We went over to Jackie's for breakfast and took pictures.  Then shopping.  Harland got a ring and I got a necklace (tiger eye black pearl).  Mine was $55.00.  Harland's was $102.00.  Beautiful.  Remembrance of our 50th wedding anniversary.  We then drove to see Old Faithful.  We got back to West Yellowstone around 4PM and left for Missoula.  Got home around 11PM.

September 17, 1983 - Saturday.  We just cooled it today and visited Georgia and Val.  Harland and I went to church and we then went out for supper and went home.  Then Ray, Fran Hoffman, Stan and Kathy Pish came home and we visited till late and mostly roses and their care.  They have 60 different varieties.  

September 18, 1983 - Sunday.  Stan and Kathy left for Miles City, Montana at 10AM.  I washed dishes and Georgia dressed Val.  We left at 11:30AM, picked Fran Hoffman up and gassed Georgia's T-bird up and we started for Whitefish.  We got a room at Mountain Holiday Motel for $28.00 and then Georgia, Fran and Val started back home to Missoula.

September 19, 1983 - Monday.  We left for the depot with a borrowed truck.  Arrived at 6AM, checked our luggage.  The train left at 6:45AM for our trip home.  Belton was our 1st stop.  It snowed in the mountains yesterday, about 3 inches.  It took 2 3/4 hours to come back thru Glacier Park, about 25 mph.  We arrived at Staples, Minnesota at about 4:10AM.  Paul and Grace were there and we had breakfast at Tony's, then came home at 6AM.  We turned the heat up and went to bed for 3 hours.  I got most of the laundry done except good dark slacks, etc.  Ray Richards stayed in the the 3rd cabin by Dena's.  He got a job at the turkey plant as he had no place to stay, so he's staying here.

September 21, 1983 - Wednesday.  I got all our ironing done today.

September 22, 1983 - Thursday.  We wrote out about 6 checks, insurances, telephone, etc and I cleaned house.  Grace Musil stopped after dinner and Evelyn came later.  Grace Liane's home is sold.  We played our 2nd card party by Chet and Frieda's.

September 23, 1983 - Friday.  I finished washing good slacks, etc.  I made 5 apple pies.  Put 3 in the freezer, baked 2.  Gave Jan Ferek one, accross the road.

September 24, 1983 - Saturday.  We put a longer pipe on the dryer and I got the stand in to put flowers on.  I have them all in now.  Harland picked part of the grapes so I cooked some of them up tonite after church.  Paul, Grace and I went to Deerwood at 5PM.  Haraland and Ray went fishing, but no luck.

September 25, 1983 - Sunday.  I cooked the rest of the grapes for Jill and canned 5 quarts of carrots.  Har and I and Ray went to Bonanza and then up to see Mom.  Then Ray stayed here and finished painting the gas drum.  Harland and I went to Lingwall's 50th wedding anniversary.


September 26, 1983 - Monday.  Jack would be 74 years old today.  We put in 6 1/2 hours at Woodland Acres.  I made supper.  I'm making jelly.  I made 3 big batches of jam and jelly.

September 27, 1983 - Tuesday.  We went to Brainerd this AM and I'm getting ready for card club tonite.

September 28, 1983 - Wednesday.  I washed dishes from the party and then washed clothes.  When I got everything on the line, it started to rain, so I dried some in the dryer and hung some on the line.  We went to Deerwood Senior Citizens and I may end up with the secretary job.  Ray brought home 35 lbs of gizzards.  Ray and Harland went fishing, but no luck.

September 29, 1983 - Thursday.  I had my eyes examined and there isn't enough changes to get new glasses.  Our washer is repaired in Brainerd.  $103.65.

October 1, 1983 - Saturday.  We picked Cec up from the bus in Brainerd.

October 3, 1983 - Monday.  We've been making apple pies.  Harland and Ray went fishing, no luck  Cec, I and Grace went to the nursing home.  Mom was pretty good.

October 4, 1983 - Tuesday.  We went to Garrison Senior Citizens and came home afterwards and finished up our apples.  Made 2 cherry pies, 1 blueberry, 1 apple crisp for V.F.W. pig roast on Saturday.

October 5, 1983 - Wednesday.  Harland and I went to Brainerd to see Dr. Moran.  Harland goes into the hospital on the 25th.

October 6, 1983 - Thursday.  We had Ladies Aid.  Grace and I served at the Echo Town Hall.

October 7, 1983 - Friday.  I washed clothes again so Ray had clean clothes for work.  He paid us $81.00 that he owed us for room and board and for $21 that he borrowed.

October 8, 1983 - Saturday.  Evelyn picked Cec and I up at 8:15AM to go to Deerwood (St. Joe bazaar) and we went to 5:00 mass and came home, picked up Harland and an apple crisp, went to V.F.W. for the pig roast.  It was V.G.  Came home and packed suit cases for Wisconsin trip, dug out 2 flowers.

October 9, 1983 - Sunday.  We left for the kids in Wisconsin at 7:55AM.  We dropped Cec off by Marie and we had dinner by Marie and then left at 12:45PM.  We stopped by Chick first, dropped some things off and then went by Katie and Willie where we're staying.  I drove 443 miles today.

October 10, 1983 - Monday.  We're just cooling it today so far.  Harland slept in the AM and after lunch till Willie came home.  We played cards and drank Manhattens.  John came out for supper.  We bought him king size sheets and mattress pads for his birthday.

October 11, 1983 - Tuesday.  We went up by Alfred's and they took us to Walker's for dinner and we visited till 4PM.  Came home, met the kids and John at Hibbings for 6PM dinner.  13 in all.  $75.00 all tolled.  Very good food and service.

October 12, 1983 - Wednesday.  We went by Maxine and Warren for dinner.  Darlene and Nancy came out, too.  Darlene drove and we went out and picked up 6 bags of onions.  2 for us and the rest for Bilke's relation.  Harland and I went over to see Judy ride her horse, Jasper.  Then we came home around 8:30.

October 13, 1983 - Thursday.  We went to Beaver Dam and done some shopping, came home, ate our chicken from Tuesday nite.  We had our meatballs, etc for supper and we went by Pat and Len after 8PM.  We were glad to leave there.  Noise, cussing, swearing.

October 14, 1983 - Friday.  We went by Chick and Tam.  Judy had to work.  Chick and Bill took off work.  Tam and I went shopping.  She got a gray skirt and pale pink blouse.  She bought her a pair of heels, black.  We got a bucket of chicken, cole slaw and potato salad and went out by Bill and Sharon for dinner.  The guys (Chick, Bill, Harland and Marty) went picking hickory nuts, which wasn't very good.  Got less than 1/4 of an ice cream pail.  We stayed by Bill and Sharon for supper, played "500", but they won 7 games and we won 2 games.

October 15, 1983 - Saturday.  Didn't do much, but we had the duck and dressing for dinner that we brought along.  I helped Katie wash clothes and just cooled it.

October 16, 1983 - Sunday.  Harland, I, Katie, Willie, Alison, Bridgette and John went to 8:00 mass and we then went to Country Kitchen for breakfast.  We then gassed up and left for Marie's at 9:45.  We had a bite to eat by Marie and left for home.  Cec had a nice visit by Marie.  We got home at 8PM.  We counted cars.  There were 913 from highway 169 to highway 18.  Hard on the eyes.  I drove 1060 miles on our trip to Wisconsin.  Ray was here when we got home.

October 17, 1983 - Monday.  Cec, I, Grace, Frieda went to Woodland Acres.  We sewed on the quilt.  I drove as Grace had a low tire.  We unloaded the trunk when we got home.  Apples, onions, pears, etc.  I ordered a muffler and tail pipe for the car at Wards.

October 18, 1983 - Tuesday.  I'm going to wash clothes, 6 sheets, etc.  Bob Bivens, Ben Carman passed away while we were in Wisconsin.  Harland and I went to Crosby.  He got a haircut and I went to Koop's for Evan Verling's funeral.  We played cards.  1st club by George and Susan's.

October 19, 1983 - Wednesday.  It's windy and raining again.  We took our potatoes over by George and Susan's for winter storage.  We played 3 games of "500".  Susan and I won all three.

October 20, 1983 - Thursday.  I got the ironing done and we went to Brainerd.  Had a new muffler and tail pipe put on the car.  $106.00.  We got 30 lbs of thighs and drum sticks.  $0.29 a lb.  We played cards by Paul and Grace's tonite.  Our 2nd card club.  Harland got cheese and honey this AM.  Government surplus.

October 21, 1983 - Friday.  We went to the pancake dinner at Aitkin.  I worked awhile and then Cec, I and Harland ate and then we came home.  I started raking leaves.  Ray and Carl came, so I had to make a bite to eat and then we played sheepshead.

October 22, 1983 - Saturday.  We started raking and mowing and we are almost done.  I dug the carrots and we tried the parsnips.  They weren't too bad.  We got a pail full of carrots.  I washed the mud off and will can them later.  Evelyn came over and I gave her the squash and a couple of onions and 5 pears.  Ray picked Cec up and they went to Grand Rapids.

October 23, 1983 - Sunday.  Judy gave me a patchwork calendar for 1984 and patchwork greeting card assortment for Mother-in-law Day.  Very pretty.  Margaret (Dena's mom) and I went to 9:00 mass.  I canned the carrots, 5 1/2 quarts.  Evelyn came over this afternoon.  Ray brought Cec back and we played sheepshead.  I won $0.75.

October 24, 1983 - Monday.  I wrote Judy a thank you card and sent a sympathy card to Vera Carman.  Harland went to see Dr. Musty at 1:30.  Everything seems OK.  I started to house clean our bedroom.  Harland helped me move the bed to clean under and I wiped the walls down.

October 25, 1983 - Tuesday.  I washed our bedding down to the mattress, run the sweeper in the porch, kitchen and bath.  Made dinner and we took Harland to the hospital and Cec up by Mom.

October 26, 1983 - Wednesday.  Harland will have his surgery this AM at 7:30.  Cec will spend some time with Mom while I'm at the hospital.  Harland had his surgery at 7:30AM.  I guess it was rough.  He slept all AM and had a liquid lunch.  Cec picked me up and we went to Country Kitchen.  Had hot beef sandwich.  Cec bought her a watch at Kmart.  We then went to see Mom and Cec said goodbye and we then went to the hospital.  Harland had been given a hypo and was sleeping, so when he woke up, he said I should go home.  So I took Cec to the bus and came home.  I put clean bedding on Cec's bed and picked up rugs and new dish towels I bought in Wisconsin to wash in the AM.  I washed my hair and set it.

October 27, 1983 - Thursday.  I sure couldn't sleep last night.  I washed clothes, washed the car and washed the glass in the storm doors.  I painted the storm door where the cat jumps on it.  I emptied the rain barrel.  I'm going up to the hospital at 1:30.  They took another echo cardiogram.  The 1st one wasn't satisfactory.  He'll probably come home Saturday.  After supper, I done my ironing - 23 dish towels.

October 28, 1983 - Friday.  I finished our bedroom, clean dresser scarves, etc.  I cleaned the shower stall also.  Harland feels good, but his blood pressure is a little high.  The doctor wants him to stay another day.  I made the 5 quilt blocks for the Ladies Aid.

October 29, 1983 - Saturday.  I had 2 new tires put on the car in the back.  Went up to the hospital, but he couldn't come home.  Dr. Musty is off for a couple of days.  Dr. Furda wouldn't release him.  I came home and raked leaves again in the back.  I embroidered a dish towel for Pine Lake Seniors.

October 30, 1983 - Sunday.  I started embroidering a set of dish towels.  I went up to see Harland and they have to get his blood thinned.

October 31, 1983 - Monday.  I went to Woodland Acres alone, but the doctor hadn't been in to see Harland, so he couldn't come home.  Paul and Grace picked Margaret and I up and we went to 5:00 mass at Deerwood.  After supper, Susan and I sold coffee and doughnuts, $26.00 worth.

November 1, 1983 - Tuesday.  I made apple squares and Harland called.  He could come home, so I didn't bake it.  I put drops in his eye 2 x a day.

November 2, 1983 - Wednesday.  I raked leaves in the front and in the ditch.  Chet stopped to see Harland.  Susan, Dena and I went to Auxiliary meeting.

November 3, 1983 - Thursday.  I baked the apple bars.  I put drops in Harland's eye.  Today is Ladies Aid.  I've embroidered 7 dish towels this week.

November 4, 1983 - Friday.  Harland had a doctor appointment at 9AM.  He can take the patch off during the day, but at nite he has to have both patches on.  He'll get new glasses in 7-8 weeks.

November 5, 1983 - Saturday.  I made apple crisp for Crosby Senior Citizens.  We picked up George and Susan.  We went to the bazaar at the Methodist Church.

November 6, 1983 - Sunday.  I went to 9:00 mass at Garrison.  I changed clothes and picked up all the leaves in the ditch and raked all round the house.  We covered the climbing roses and put leaves in the screen.

November 7, 1983 - Monday.  Grace picked me up to go to Woodland Acres.  Bill Hively was buried today at Emily.  Paul put new plugs and freezone, etc in the car.

November 8, 1983 - Tuesday.  I put new contact on the card table last nite and wrote each one of the boys.  Sent for 2 cloth calendars and 2 decks of large number cards.  I picked Susan and Grace up and we went to Brainerd to the Defensive Driving program.  It was very interesting.  The next meeting is next Tuesday.

November 9, 1983 - Wednesday.  We had our 1st snowfall, about 3 inches of wet snow.  I brought the potatoes and apples in from the garage.  I put a hubbard squash (the one we bought in Wisconsin) and 2 stuffed pork chops in after dinner.  I washed clothes.

November 10, 1983 - Thursday.  I baked 3 pumpkin pies and done the ironing.  Paul and Harland took our washer to Brainerd as the spinner was cracked and made a racket, so I didn't use it any more.  There was a couple nuts missing and 1 loose one.  Red helped load it and when they came home, Red and Paul put our aluminum boat away.  Harland and I picked up Chet and Frieda.  We went over by Howard and Elsie for dinner.  Mabel and Elmer were there.  We had a real delicious dinner.  We did dishes and played 4 games of "500".  I and Elmer had 1st.  We both got a real pretty hot pad.  Susan picked me up.  I took 2 pumpkin pies and we went to serve the Lions and Lioness.  We had a fire (gas) from the oven.  We really had a mess to clean up.

November 11, 1983 - Friday.  Armistice Day.  George and Susan picked us up and we went to 40 Club for Pine Lake Senior Citizens' Thanksgiving Dinner.  Paul and Grace, Susan and George, Harland and I played 6 handed "500".  We won 2 games and the guys won 2.  Grace had to go home and make supper as Gregg was coming home.  We just cooled it on Saturday and Sunday.

November 14, 1983 - Monday.  Grace picked I and Frieda up and we went to Woodland Acres for 6 hours.  We put the quilt together and tied it.  Paul and Grace came over and we played dirty clubs.

November 15, 1983 - Tuesday.  We'll finish our Defensive Driving test today.  Susan, Grace and I.

November 16, 1983 - Wednesday.  Musils and us went to Deerwood Legion for our Thanksgiving dinner.  It was delicious and we played cards later.

November 17, 1983 - Thursday.  We picked George and Susan up and went to Brainerd to Knutsons for our monthly pot luck.  I brought poppyseed torte for dessert.

November 18, 1983 - Friday.  George and Susan picked us up and we went to 40 Club for our 2nd card club dinner.  Afterwards we came here and played cards and had supper.  A real good day.

November 19, 1983 - Saturday.  We went into Brainerd and up to see Mom.  Came home, got ready to go by Marie.  It really rained almost all the way.

November 20, 1983 - Sunday.  We went over by Henry's and cleaned 3 turkeys and 15 chickens.

November 21, 1983 - Monday.  We went back by Henry and cleaned 12 ducks.  30 fowl in all.

November 22, 1983 - Tuesday.  20 years ago today, Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas.  Carol and I were in the dime store in Beaver Dam when we heard it.  Marie gave me a permanent and we packed up and came home.  I drove in another snow storm from North Branch.  We left at 10:45, got home at 5 minutes to 4.  It was really bad.

November 22, 1983 - Wednesday.  I cooked up the gizzards and just done some hand sewing and cooled it.  It is really snowing today again.  We got 4 inches yesterday.  It's been snowing off and on.

November 23, 1983 - Thursday.  Thanksgiving Day.  We stayed home today.

November 26, 1983 - Saturday.  I run the sweeper.  The going is really not very good.

November 27, 1983 - Sunday.  I went to 9:00 mass.  It is cold and windy, but now snowing.

November 28, 1983 - Monday.  We didn't go to Woodland Acres.  Our roads were blocked.  Schools, offices, businesses were closed.  We have about 18 inches - the most snow for November.  Paul cleaned out the driveway again.

November 29, 1983 - Tuesday.  I shoveled the path to the garage.  We got about 4 inches of snow again.  Paul cleaned the roof off for the 2nd time.

November 30, 1983 - Wednesday.  We had 10 degrees above and lite snow flurries.  I made Swiss steak for dinner and made a stew for Ladies Aid tomorrow.  I finished the last of the little aprons.

December 1, 1983 - Thursday.  Paul and Grace picked us up for Ladies Aid at Chuck and Helen Elwood's home.  We had a short meeting and singing Christmas carols, gift exchange and a beautiful program.  Thanks to Lydia Rogers' program.

December 2, 1983 - Friday.  I went to Dr. Hanske for my cough.

December 3, 1983 - Saturday.  We had our Christmas party for Senior Citizens at Crosby.  I brought squash.  We went over by Mayme and played 6 handed "500".

December 4, 1983 - Sunday.  I went to 9:00 mass in Garrison.

December 5, 1983 - Monday.  I, Susan and Doris went to Woodland Acres for 6 1/2 hours.  Doris drove.  At nite, Susan and I sold doughnuts and coffee at V.F.W. Auxiliary.

December 6, 1983 - Tuesday.  We had our Senior Citizen pot luck at Garrison.  Our Christmas party is at the Goose.

December 7, 1983 - Wednesday.  Our 2nd card club.  Had our dinner at the 40 Club and then we played cards here as it was our turn to have it.

December 8, 1983 - Thursday.  Today we were all invited (ladies) at the Alliance Church for a salad luncheon and a nice Christmas program.

December 9, 1983 - Friday.  We had our Christmas party at Pine Lake Church.  Sang Christmas carols and exchanged gifts.  A very nice time.

December 10, 1983 - Saturday.  Today is Chick and Judy's 18th wedding anniversary.

December 11, 1983 - Sunday.  Paul and Grace picked me up for church.  Otherwise I wouldn't have made it because of 5 inches of snow.  We had a delicious turkey dinner by Paul and Grace.

December 12, 1983 - Monday.  I picked Grace up and we went to Woodland Acres for 6 1/2 hours.  I went to the doctor again.  I still have a lot of congestion.

December 13, 1983 - Tuesday.  It snowed all day.  I made an angel food cake, took strawberries to Frieda and Chet's for our card club.  George and Susan picked us up and Paul went ahead with the Scout and plowed.  We still got stuck.  Chet and I had 1st.  Susan and George and low.

December 14, 1983 - Wednesday.  Grace picked I and Susan up and we went to Senior Center and wrapped Christmas gifts for 5 1/2 hours.  I went up on the roof and shoveled it off of snow on the kitchen and porch.  We had water back up and it was dripping over the sink and from the cupboard.

December 15, 1983 - Thursday.  I went up on the roof and finished shoveling the snow off.  I put our fudge away that I made last nite.  Harland has a cold, so I went down, got 2 lbs butter and 5 1/2 lbs cheese.  We had our Senior Citizen dinner at the Goose.  V.G.

December 16, 1983 - Friday.  Harland went to the eye doctor.  Got the stitches out and he will really be able to see when he gets new glasses.  Harland saw Dr. Musty and got antibiotics for his flu, sore throat, cold and chills.  I baked cookies.  I'm taking 20 to V.F.W. for our Christmas Swiss steak dinner tonite.  Harland isn't going.  Dinner was delicious.  The music was fine.

December 17, 1983 - Saturday.  I shoveled what the snow plow put in the driveway.  I fixed pork chops, wild rice for the freezer.  I stirred up 3 batches of cookies, mint surprise, Sally Ann and sugar cookies with date filling.  Evelyn, I, Paul and Grace are going to 5 o'clock mass at Deerwood.  It's supposed to be -25 to -35 in the AM.  I've got hamburger thawed out to fry and put in the oven with mushroom soup on.  I'll have a couple meals ahead for when the kids come.

December 18, 1983 - Sunday.  We had -37 below at 8AM.  I baked the Sally Ann cookies this AM.  I finished the back of Bertha's pillow for Christmas.  It was -31 at 5:30AM.  Harland felt good this AM so we went to Catholic church K.C. Christmas party.  We took hot vegetables, as ham, rolls and coffee were furnished.  Evelyn didn't go as she had car trouble, etc.

December 19, 1983 - Monday.  22 years ago Chick had his bad car accident.  Thank God he was lucky, but a very long and painful recovery.  We had -48 at 7:40AM.  We didn't go to the nursing home as it was too cold.  I'm finishing my baking and candy making.  A few gifts to wrap.  Paul and Grace picked me up and we went to church and confessions.

December 20, 1983 - Tuesday.  We had -40 this AM.  Red had problems, so he's using our battery charger.  3 cars and none start.  We made 2 batches of sea foam.  I'm done cookie and candy making.  I'm making some little boxes for residents at the nursing home.  Evelyn dropped our gifts off and picked up theirs.  Her and Bertha are going to North Dakota for Christmas.

December 21, 1983 - Wednesday. We had -5 below this AM.  No wind.  Harland put up the tree.  I cleaned most of the house, washed clothes, made brandy slush and finished the pickled fish.  I washed my hair.

December 22, 1983 - Thursday.  -29 below and windy, which is supposed to have wind chill -54.  I finished my hair.  Jim called. The kids are leaving tomorrow AM at 6:00.  I finished cleaning the house.  Paul, Grace, Dad and I went to the nursing home for their Christmas party.

December 23, 1983 - Friday.  The kids arrived at 3:30PM.  It was -38 this AM and wind chill is between -55 to -80.

December 24, 1983 - Saturday.  Today John is 20 years old.  We went to Brainerd and the guys went fishing.  A northern and 1 perch for ?  We opened our gifts.

December 25, 1983 - Sunday.  It was -25 this AM.  We fixed ham, eggs, etc for breakfast and I put the turkey in the oven at 8AM.  It weighed 20 lbs.  Bill, Jim, Marty, Gramps and I went to 10:00 mass.  Collette was sick, so Sharon stayed home with her.  After church we went over by Louise.  George is in the Vet's hospital in Minneapolis.  He'll have his right leg taken off above the knee sometime next week.  He'll be 60 years old December 31st.  He's a diabetic and he still drinks.

December 26, 1983 - Monday.  Grace picked Sharon, Marty, Collette and I up and we went to the nursing home.  Mom was real good.  I got Christmas wrap 1/2 price.

December 27, 1983 - Tuesday.  Marty was sick with the flu.  Ray came over.  He wasn't over before because his truck clunked out and he had to get a different one.

December 28, 1983 - Wednesday.  The kids were going home today, but Sharon has the diahrrea and we have card club by Elsie and Howard.

December 29, 1983 - Thursday.  Sharon felt better this AM, so the kids got ready and left at 7:30AM.  They took home 60 lbs of bacon, 20 lbs of pork sausages.  Harland and I washed the dishes up and went to Brainerd to see Dr. Moran.  The doctor took another stitch out of his eye.  I ripped Bill and Sharon's bed apart and also Jim's.  I started to clean.

December 30, 1983 - Friday.  It's -7 this AM.  There's a warming trend coming.  I'm washing bedding today and running the sweeper.  It's 16 above in Brainerd and sunny.

December 31, 1983 - Saturday.  It was 2 above and sunny today and it got up to 24 above in Minneapolis.  George is 60 years old today.  I fixed sloppy joe's, buns, herring, dip and crackers.  We played "500" by Paul and Grace.  We had 3 tables, Foresters, Hivelys, Musils, Millers, and us.
